To set up a Minecraft Forge server, install a Java version that matches your Minecraft release, run the official Forge installer in a new server folder, start the generated server once, accept the EULA in eula.txt, and then add compatible mods. Everyone who joins must use Minecraft: Java Edition and matching Minecraft, Forge, and mod versions. Players on your network can connect locally; friends elsewhere may also require firewall and router changes, commonly for Java’s default port 25565.

What a Forge server is—and what must match
Forge is a modding platform for Minecraft: Java Edition. A Forge server loads Forge-compatible mods and provides the multiplayer world; it does not run the Bedrock Edition server software. The official Minecraft server page explicitly limits this setup to Java Edition.

- The server and every client must use the same Minecraft release, such as 1.20.1 or 1.21.x.
- The server and clients must use a Forge build compatible with that Minecraft release.
- Mods must support the selected Minecraft and Forge versions.
- Mods that add required content or server-side logic generally need to be present in the same compatible versions on both server and client. A few purely client-side mods are exceptions, but treat a modpack’s documentation as authoritative.
Choose the Minecraft version and modpack first. Installing Forge before deciding those versions is a common way to create an unusable server.
Java versions required by Forge
Install a 64-bit Java runtime or JDK before launching Forge. Verify the Java executable that your server will use with:

java -versionForge’s 2026 compatibility table maps releases as follows. Use the row for your exact Minecraft version, not merely the newest Java installed on the computer.

These mappings come from MinecraftForge’s 2026 table. If multiple Java versions are installed, call the required executable by its full path or adjust your operating system’s PATH so the server does not silently use another version. An “Unsupported class version” message is usually a Java/Minecraft mismatch.
Prepare the computer and server folder
Check the prerequisites
- Minecraft: Java Edition installed for each player who will connect.
- A 64-bit Java runtime or JDK matching the selected release.
- The official Forge installer for the exact Minecraft version.
- A new, writable folder reserved exclusively for this server.
- Permission to run programs and, for remote play, to change the host firewall and home router.
Create a short, simple path such as Minecraft-Forge-Server. Avoid placing the server in a cloud-synced folder or a directory with restrictive permissions. Keep the installer, generated libraries, launch scripts, configuration files, world, and mods together in this folder. A separate folder for each Minecraft/modpack version prevents files from different installations being mixed.
Install Forge in server mode
1. Select a Forge build
On the Forge project’s download page, select the exact Minecraft version. Forge offers Recommended and Latest builds. MinecraftForge notes that Latest builds may include newer features but can be less stable; choose Recommended when reliability matters, and use Latest only when a mod specifically requires it.
Download the installer JAR for that selected build. Do not rename it to suggest a different version, and do not use a Forge installer for another Minecraft release.

2. Run the installer for a server
Open a terminal or command prompt in the empty server folder, then run the installer in server-install mode. If you renamed the downloaded file to forge-installer.jar, the command is:

java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServerIf you kept Forge’s original filename, substitute that filename exactly. The installer places the Forge libraries and launch files in the current folder. Wait for it to finish; do not move only the JAR and leave the generated libraries behind.
On Windows, you can open the folder, choose Open in Terminal, and run the same command. On macOS or Linux, use Terminal and change to the folder with cd before running it. If the installer reports a Java error, stop and correct the Java version before trying again.
3. Identify the generated launch files
Forge normally creates platform-appropriate launch scripts or a generated server launch command alongside its libraries. Run the generated Windows script on Windows, or the generated shell script on macOS/Linux. Keep the working directory set to the server folder; launching from elsewhere can make the server unable to find its libraries or configuration.
Start the server and accept the EULA
First launch
Run the generated launch script or command once without adding mods. The first launch creates configuration files, libraries, and a file named eula.txt. It then stops because the Minecraft End User License Agreement has not been accepted. This shutdown is expected, not a failed installation.

Edit eula.txt
- Open
eula.txtin a plain-text editor inside the server folder. - Change the line
eula=falsetoeula=true. - Save the file without adding a second extension such as
.txt.txt. - Run the same generated launch script or command again from the server folder.
Minecraft Help documents this exact edit-and-rerun sequence, and Forge’s dedicated-server documentation describes the initial stop until the EULA is accepted. If the server still exits immediately, confirm that the file really contains eula=true, that it is in the folder being used by the launch command, and that the command is not pointing at a different installation.
Confirm a clean Forge start
For the first successful run, wait until the console reports that the server has finished loading and is ready for commands. Stop it cleanly from the server console with:
stopA clean stop writes the world and configuration files. Do not close the terminal window or kill the process while it is saving unless the process is unresponsive and you have no alternative.
Add and organize mods
Install mods only after the unmodded server works
Starting once without mods separates Forge installation problems from mod compatibility problems. After that clean start, stop the server and place the server-required mod JAR files in the generated mods folder. If the installer did not create that folder, start Forge once, stop it, and check the server directory again.

Use the same Minecraft version, compatible Forge build, and compatible mod versions on every client and the server. A mod made for 1.20.1 is not automatically compatible with 1.20.4 or 1.21.x. Modpack instructions take precedence over assumptions about version compatibility.

Test in small groups
- Back up the world and server folder before changing the mod set.
- Add a small group of known-compatible mods.
- Start the server and read the console for missing dependency or wrong-version errors.
- Join with a client using the identical mod set where required.
- Stop the server cleanly before adding the next group.
This approach identifies the offending mod without forcing you to remove an entire pack. Never delete a mod from a world casually: blocks, items, or dimensions supplied by that mod may disappear or make the world fail to load. Keep dated backups before upgrades and test major changes on a copy of the world.

Local connection
Start the server first, then launch the matching Forge profile in Minecraft: Java Edition. On the same computer, add a multiplayer server using localhost as the address when the server is listening on its default port. Another device on the same home network can use the host computer’s local IP address, provided the host firewall allows the Java server process.

Being on the same Wi-Fi network does not bypass Forge, Minecraft, or mod version checks.
Friends connecting from outside the home
Remote access usually has two separate controls:
- Host firewall: allow the Java server process or the server’s listening port for the network profile you intend to use.
- Router port forwarding: forward the external port to the host computer’s local IP address. Minecraft’s official server information identifies 25565 as Java’s default port that may need to be opened.
The external player uses your public address and forwarded port; players inside your network generally use the local address instead. Assign the host computer a stable local IP or a DHCP reservation so a router rule does not point to the wrong device after a reboot.
Do not open a port casually. Port forwarding exposes a service to the internet; use a strong operating-system account, keep Java and Forge updated where the modpack permits, restrict firewall rules to the needed scope, and close the forwarding rule when you no longer need remote access. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work even when the router appears configured correctly.
Join the server
- Launch the Minecraft: Java Edition profile using the exact Minecraft and Forge versions selected for the server.
- Open Multiplayer, choose Add Server or Direct Connection, and enter
localhost, the host’s local IP, or the public address supplied by the operator. - Use the server’s non-default port in the form
address:portif the operator configured one. - Connect only after the server console shows it has finished loading.
A client can reach the network service and still be rejected for a mod-list or version mismatch. Treat the complete error message as useful diagnostic information rather than repeatedly changing router settings.
Memory, CPU, and player-count expectations
There is no authoritative universal RAM allocation, CPU requirement, or maximum player count for Forge servers. Demand changes with the number and type of mods, world-generation work, simulation and view distances, chunk activity, and concurrent players. A lightly modded private world and a large automation or exploration pack can have very different needs.
Begin with the modpack author’s documented allocation if one exists, monitor memory use and tick performance during real play, and change one variable at a time. Leave enough RAM and CPU capacity for the operating system and other services. Increasing the maximum heap indefinitely is not a substitute for diagnosing a mod that generates excessive entities, chunks, or tasks.
Troubleshooting common failures

When troubleshooting, read the earliest meaningful error in the server log rather than only the final shutdown line. Remove recently added mods, reproduce the problem with the smallest set possible, and restore a known-good backup if the world itself is at risk.
Maintenance checklist
- Record the Minecraft release, Forge build, Java major version, and mod list in a text file.
- Back up the world and configuration before updating Forge, Java, or mods.
- Stop the server with the
stopcommand before copying or replacing world files. - Test updates on a duplicate server folder and a copied world first.
- Keep the host firewall enabled and remove unused port-forwarding rules.
- Tell players exactly which client profile and mod versions they must install.
Once the clean Forge server starts, accepts the EULA, and a local client joins, add remote networking and larger mod sets one change at a time. That sequence gives you a known-good baseline to return to when a later change fails.
