The new member’s profile picture is pinned at the top of chat for five minutes. Members-only chat is a separate, optional setting that controls who can post; it does not create the welcome message.
What happens when someone joins during your live stream
The welcome is automatic when a viewer becomes a channel member during the broadcast. YouTube posts the message in live chat and pins the member’s profile picture at the top of chat for five minutes. There is no separate message to write or schedule in the setup described by YouTube.
What to check before you go live
- Confirm channel memberships are available and enabled for your channel. The automatic live-chat welcome is a channel-membership benefit.
- Start or schedule your live stream normally. YouTube’s documented setup does not include a separate welcome-message toggle or custom welcome-message field.
- Decide separately whether to restrict chat. You can leave chat open or enable subscribers-only or members-only chat. These settings govern who may post, not whether YouTube sends the new-member message.
How to enable members-only chat
Use this setting only if you want to limit who can participate in chat. A public stream can remain viewable to everyone while members-only chat allows only channel members to post.
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Choose Stream, then create a stream or reuse existing settings.
- Select Edit.
- Under Live chat, enable Enable members-only chat.
- Save your changes.
You cannot enable subscribers-only chat and members-only chat at the same time. If you want all viewers to be able to chat, leave both restrictions off.

If a member joins while you’re offline
YouTube says it does not send a live notification when someone joins while the creator is offline. To review membership activity, open YouTube Studio and go to Earn > Memberships.
