How to Set Up a Matter Smart Lamp with Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa

To set up a Matter smart lamp, power it on, put it into pairing mode using the maker’s instructions, then add it in Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa by scanning its Matter QR code or entering the numeric setup code. To use the same lamp in another platform, generate a fresh pairing code from the first platform. Check whether your lamp uses Wi-Fi or Thread: Thread models need a compatible Thread-enabled controller, and some platform features require a hub.

Before you start

  • Make sure the bulb or lamp is explicitly labeled Matter-compatible, and that its socket, fixture and any wall dimmer suit the model.
  • Have the platform app installed, the lamp’s QR code or numeric setup code ready, and the lamp powered on. Keep the code packaging or manual accessible.
  • Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and update the platform app and compatible controller software. Bluetooth is used in discovery and commissioning flows; Amazon documents its use to pass network credentials during Alexa commissioning. TP-Link’s setup guide and Amazon’s Matter documentation describe the relevant flows.
  • Check the lamp’s connection type. Wi-Fi bulbs follow the model’s Wi-Fi requirements; Thread bulbs require a compatible, online Thread-enabled controller or border router. Amazon specifically requires a Thread-enabled Alexa device for Thread-based Matter devices. Amazon Matter setup requirements

Do not assume all Matter bulbs use the same Wi-Fi band or have the same dimmer limits. For example, the 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi and wall-dimmer warnings in the reviewed OREIN manual apply to that specific A19 model, not every Matter bulb. OREIN A19 manual

Add the lamp to one platform

Matter is the compatibility standard; the platform app still handles adding, naming and organizing the device. TP-Link’s guide documents setup in all three apps. Menu wording can shift with app updates, so if a label differs, look for the app’s Matter-device or accessory setup option. TP-Link Matter compatibility guide TP-Link platform setup instructions

Alexa

  1. Open Alexa and tap Devices.
  2. Tap +, choose Add Device, then choose Matter. If Matter is not shown among shortcuts, look under Other.
  3. Confirm that the lamp is Matter-compatible and powered on.
  4. Scan its Matter QR code, or enter the numeric setup code if prompted, then follow the app instructions.
  5. Name the lamp and assign it to a room.

For a Thread-based lamp, make sure an online Thread-enabled Alexa device is available before commissioning. Amazon Matter documentation

Add the same lamp to another platform

Matter supports multi-admin control, so you can commission one lamp in more than one Matter-enabled app. The original setup code may be intended only for the first ecosystem; for another one, create a new pairing code in the platform that already controls the lamp.

  3. Generate a new code and enter it in the second platform’s Matter setup flow before it expires.

Menu labels and code expiry are app-specific. TP-Link describes a Google-generated pairing code that expires after three minutes; treat that duration as applying to that flow, not all platforms. TP-Link Matter compatibility guide TP-Link cross-platform setup instructions
