What the macOS firewall actually controls
macOS’s application firewall controls incoming network connections to your Mac. It is not a general-purpose filter for every connection your Mac makes to the internet. The practical question is whether another device or service may open a connection to an app or service running on your Mac.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
When an app that has not been added and allowed attempts to receive a connection, macOS can display an alert asking whether to allow or deny the connection over the network or internet. Until you make a decision, connection attempts are denied. This does not mean that every process with network access appears in the list: Apple documents exceptions for system apps, services, processes, and some digitally signed apps opened automatically by another app.

The firewall is useful for reducing unsolicited access, but Apple does not publish a percentage showing how many attacks it stops. Treat it as one incoming-connection control, alongside software updates, account security, sensible sharing settings, and other protections.

Turn on the firewall in current macOS
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Network in the sidebar. Scroll if necessary, then select Firewall.
- Turn Firewall on.
- Select Options to configure individual apps and the broader firewall choices.
Apple disables Options until the firewall is turned on. The current Mac Help instructions are documented in Apple’s guide to blocking connections to a Mac.
On macOS 13 and later, the control is in System Settings. Apple’s security documentation identifies the older route for macOS 12 or earlier as System Preferences > Security & Privacy. If labels differ after a future macOS update, use the System Settings search field and search for Firewall.
Add an app or service and choose its access
- With the firewall enabled, open System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options.
- In the apps and services list, select Add (the add control may appear as a plus button).
- Choose the app or service you want to manage.
- Use the app’s menu in the list to choose whether to Allow or Block incoming connections.
- Close the settings window when finished; macOS applies the rule to that app or service.
Use Allow when the app legitimately needs to receive connections from another device. Examples include a local development server, a media or file-sharing service, or a collaboration tool that documents an incoming-connection requirement. Use Block when you have a specific reason to stop that app from accepting unsolicited connections and you understand which features may depend on them.
Blocking an app can affect its performance or other software that depends on it. Apple states: “Blocking an app’s access through the firewall could interfere with or affect the performance of the app or other software that may depend on it.” If a feature stops working immediately after a block rule is added, return to this list and change that app to Allow, then test the feature again.
Why an app may not appear in the list
The list is not a complete inventory of every process that can use a network. Apple says some programs can have access even when they are not shown. These may include built-in system apps, services and processes, as well as digitally signed apps opened automatically by another app.
Do not add random system files merely because you cannot identify them. If you have a concrete reason to block a program that is being handled as an exception, Apple’s documented approach is to add that app to the firewall list yourself and then set it to Block. Adding an app creates an explicit rule that is easier to review later.
Conversely, do not assume that an app must be manually approved before it can ever receive a connection. The automatic signed-software settings and Apple’s system-process exceptions mean that macOS can handle some software outside the visible list.

Understand every firewall option
| Option | What it changes | When it fits | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-app Allow or Block | Sets whether a selected app or service may accept incoming connections. | Use when one program needs a deliberate exception or must be stopped. | Blocking can break that app or dependent software. |
| Block all incoming connections | Blocks incoming connections to nonessential apps and services. | Use for a broad lockdown when you do not need most incoming services. | Sharing services and other nonessential listeners can stop. Apple says basic services such as DHCP, Bonjour and IPsec remain available. |
| Automatically allow built-in software | Allows built-in apps and services signed by a valid certificate authority to be added automatically to the allowed list. | Use when you want macOS-supplied software to work without approving each item manually. | It is broader than a hand-maintained allow list because qualifying built-in software can be added automatically. |
| Automatically allow downloaded signed software | Allows downloaded apps and services signed by a valid certificate authority to be added automatically to the allowed list. | Use when you prefer convenience for properly signed software. | More downloaded software can receive automatic treatment than with a manual-only policy. |
| Stealth mode | Stops responses to unauthorized probing requests, including ICMP ping requests. Authorized apps can still receive responses. | Use as an additional reduction in responses to probing. | It does not replace per-app rules and does not make the Mac completely invisible. |
Apple’s current firewall settings reference describes these choices in more detail in Change Firewall settings on Mac. Apple Business also documents the application-layer behavior and the services that remain available when broad blocking is enabled in its Application Layer Firewall configuration guide, published April 14, 2026.
Compare the settings by scope and usability
The quickest way to choose is to compare what each setting covers. A per-app rule has the narrowest scope: it changes one named app or service and is usually the least disruptive choice. Block all incoming connections has the widest scope, covering nonessential apps and services at once. It is appropriate for a temporary lockdown or a Mac that should not provide sharing, but it can interrupt several unrelated features simultaneously.
The automatic-allow checkboxes are convenience controls, not replacements for the firewall itself. Allowing built-in software signed by a valid certificate authority lets qualifying Apple components be added automatically. Allowing downloaded signed software does the same for qualifying downloaded programs. Turning either option on can reduce prompts, but it also means you are delegating part of the allow-list decision to macOS’s signature checks rather than reviewing every app yourself.
Stealth mode belongs on a different axis. It changes the Mac’s response to unauthorized probes; it does not select an app, open a port, or block a specific service. You can use Stealth mode with per-app rules or with broad blocking, but it should not be presented as a substitute for either.

Choose the narrowest setting that solves your problem
You need one app to accept local connections
Leave broad blocking off if you depend on several sharing or collaboration services. Add the specific app under Options and set it to Allow. If macOS later asks about an app that was not previously added, verify the app’s identity and the feature you are using before accepting the alert.
After allowing it, test the exact workflow that needs the connection: for example, connect from the other Mac, open the shared media library, or access the local development page. A successful launch alone does not prove that every helper component has the access it needs.
You want to stop one app from listening
Add that app explicitly and set it to Block. This is more targeted than blocking all incoming connections. Test any plugin, companion app, or workflow that communicates with it, because dependent software can also be affected.

If the app is not visible because it is treated as a signed or system exception, add the app manually first, then select Block. Keep a note of why you made the change so a later troubleshooting session does not mistake the rule for a macOS defect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou rarely use incoming services
Block all incoming connections is the broad choice. It blocks nonessential apps and services and can prevent file sharing or other sharing features from working. Apple identifies DHCP, Bonjour and IPsec as basic services that remain available, but connections to other sharing services are prevented. Check your current sharing needs before enabling it.
This setting is not the same as turning off networking. The Mac can remain connected for ordinary network use, while incoming connections to nonessential listeners are refused. If you later need a sharing feature, turn broad blocking off or replace it with narrower app rules and retest.
You want fewer replies to network probes
Enable Stealth mode in addition to the access rules that fit your apps. Stealth mode changes how the Mac responds to unauthorized probing; it does not decide which applications may accept connections. A service that is allowed by an app rule remains governed by that rule.
What happens when macOS shows an allow-or-deny alert
The alert appears when macOS detects a connection attempt for an app that has not already been added and allowed. Until you answer, attempts are denied. Read the app name carefully and consider what initiated the connection:
- If you just started a feature that is supposed to receive a connection, choose Allow and confirm that the app is the expected publisher or installation.
- If the request is unexpected, choose Deny. You can later inspect the firewall options and add an explicit rule if you need more control.
- If an app works only after repeated prompts, check whether a signed-software automatic-allow setting or a dependent helper process is involved.
Because some built-in and signed software is handled automatically, the absence of an alert is not proof that no incoming service exists. Review the firewall list and your sharing settings when you need to understand a particular feature.
Before changing a rule, identify what depends on it
- Write down the feature that needs the connection and which device initiates it.
- Check whether the feature is a sharing service, collaboration tool, local server, or another listener that your household or team uses.
- Change one app rule at a time, then repeat the workflow that previously worked.
- If it fails, undo the last change before making additional changes. This isolates whether the firewall rule caused the problem.
This one-change-at-a-time approach is especially useful when an app launches helper software. Blocking the visible app may also affect a companion process, while allowing the visible app may not be enough if the helper is separately controlled.

Troubleshoot a feature that stopped working
The Options button is unavailable
Turn on the main Firewall switch first. Apple makes the detailed Options control available only after the firewall is enabled.
An app cannot receive a connection after you blocked it
Return to System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options, find the app, and change its rule to Allow. Then retry the feature. If the app is not listed, add it manually and set the desired rule. Remember that a helper process or another app may also need incoming access.
File or media sharing stopped after lockdown
Review whether Block all incoming connections is enabled. That setting blocks connections to nonessential sharing services even though basic services such as DHCP, Bonjour and IPsec remain available. Turn broad blocking off when you need those sharing services, or use narrower per-app rules instead.
You cannot find the process you want to control
Some system processes and signed apps do not appear in the list. If you need an explicit block, add the associated app as Apple recommends. Avoid blocking an unidentified system component without first determining which feature depends on it.
The labels or location differ from these steps
Apple has moved the control between major macOS releases: macOS 13 and later use System Settings > Network > Firewall, while macOS 12 or earlier use System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Search System Settings for “Firewall” if your release uses a different sidebar arrangement.
Managed Macs may not let you change these settings
Organizations can deploy a Firewall device-management payload that enables the firewall, blocks incoming connections, specifies apps, and enables Stealth mode. Apple’s payload reference lists firewall logging support for macOS 12.0.1 or later and automatic-allow settings for macOS 12.3 or later. The exact controls exposed to a user depend on how the organization’s management vendor implements the payload.

Firewall limits you should account for
- The application firewall is focused on incoming connections to the Mac. It is not a substitute for keeping macOS and apps updated, securing user accounts, or reviewing which sharing services are enabled.
- Per-app rules can affect legitimate features, plugins, and dependent software. A block rule should be treated as a functional change, not merely a security checkbox.
- Automatic treatment for signed built-in or downloaded software trades manual control for convenience.
- Stealth mode changes responses to unauthorized probes; it does not hide the Mac from every network participant and does not replace allow/block rules.
- There are no Apple-provided outcome statistics in the referenced documentation that justify claims such as a specific percentage of attacks stopped.
A practical setup checklist
- Open System Settings > Network > Firewall and turn the firewall on.
- Open Options only after the switch is enabled.
- List the apps and services that genuinely need incoming connections.
- Add those apps explicitly and set them to Allow where required.
- Add a specific app and set it to Block when you need a targeted exception.
- Use Block all incoming connections only after checking the effect on sharing and other nonessential services.
- Consider Stealth mode as a separate probing-response choice, not as an app-access rule.
- If a work or school Mac is managed, ask the administrator about the device policy.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn on the firewall on a Mac?
Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Network > Firewall, then turn Firewall on. Select Options after the switch is enabled.
How do I allow an app through the Mac firewall?
Open System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options, select Add, choose the app or service, and set its menu to Allow. Test the feature that needs the incoming connection.
Why is the Firewall Options button disabled?
Apple keeps Options unavailable until the main Firewall switch is turned on. Enable Firewall first, then reopen Options.
Does Block all incoming connections disable the internet?
No. It blocks incoming connections to nonessential apps and services. Apple says basic services such as DHCP, Bonjour and IPsec remain available, while other sharing services can be prevented.
What is the difference between Stealth mode and blocking an app?
Blocking an app changes whether that named app may accept incoming connections. Stealth mode changes responses to unauthorized probing, including ICMP ping requests; it does not replace per-app rules or make the Mac completely invisible.
Why is an app missing from the firewall list?
Apple documents that system apps, services, processes, and some digitally signed apps opened automatically by another app may not appear. If you need an explicit rule, add the app manually and then choose Allow or Block.
Can blocking an app break another program?
Yes. Apple warns that blocking an app can interfere with its performance or software that depends on it. If a feature fails, change the rule back to Allow and test again.
Where is the firewall on older macOS versions?
macOS 13 and later use System Settings > Network > Firewall. Apple’s documentation places macOS 12 or earlier at System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Search for Firewall if the sidebar labels differ.
Why can’t I change firewall settings on my work Mac?
An organization may have installed a Firewall device-management payload that controls enabling, blocking, app rules, Stealth mode, logging, or automatic allows. Contact the administrator if controls are locked or revert.
The Bottom Line
Enable System Settings > Network > Firewall, then use Options to allow or block only the apps that need a deliberate rule. Reserve Block all incoming connections for broad lockdowns after checking sharing dependencies, and treat Stealth mode as a separate probe-response setting. If an app disappears from the list, a signed or system exception may be responsible; add it manually only when you have a clear reason.
