The Lenovo ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 is ready for home-office work once you match its actual ports, power adapter, accessories and preinstalled operating system to your desk. Start by identifying the machine type and configuration, then connect power, a compatible monitor, input devices and either Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Finish the operating-system setup and install model-specific updates before adding optional mounting, memory or storage upgrades.
1. Identify your exact M75q Gen 2 before plugging anything in
“ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2” describes a family of Tiny desktops, not one identical retail bundle. Lenovo offered different processors, storage devices, wireless modules, operating systems, rear-port options, power adapters and accessories. A used unit may therefore look different from a product photograph or another owner’s machine.

Record these details
- Read the machine-type/model label on the chassis and write down the complete identifier.
- Check which operating system is installed, if any. Lenovo lists Windows 11, several Windows 10 variants, Ubuntu, IGEL Linux and configurations with no preloaded operating system.
- Read the rating on the supplied power adapter. Lenovo lists both 65 W and 90 W options; there is no single universal adapter choice for every M75q Gen 2.
- Photograph the rear panel so you know which optional connectors your unit actually has.
- Inventory the box: monitor cable, keyboard, mouse, vertical stand and VESA hardware may be included, but Lenovo also lists accessory selections such as “None.”
Lenovo’s M75q Gen 2 guides page lists a Setup Guide, User Guide, Hardware Maintenance Manual and Safety & Warranty Guide. The setup-guide search result is dated 29 June 2021, while the current Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) is dated 9 June 2026. Specifications can vary by region and change without notice, so use the machine type when looking for the current documents.
2. Choose a safe position and connect the correct power supply
Place the Tiny chassis on a firm surface with the ventilation openings clear. Do not push it against a wall, stack papers over it or wedge it into a closed compartment. A vertical stand is an optional accessory; the computer can be used without one.

Power connection
- Confirm that the adapter belongs to this unit and that its output rating matches the machine’s requirements.
- Connect the adapter’s DC plug to the M75q Gen 2.
- Plug the adapter into a grounded wall outlet or a quality surge-protected power strip.
- Leave the computer switched off while you connect the monitor, keyboard, mouse and network.
Do not assume that every Lenovo 65 W or 90 W adapter is interchangeable. If the adapter is missing, damaged or has an uncertain rating, verify the exact machine type and replacement specification with Lenovo before powering the PC.
3. Connect one monitor first
Use the monitor input and cable you already have, then match it to an output on the computer. The standard onboard video connectors are one HDMI 1.4b port and one DisplayPort 1.4 port.
| Computer output | Useful monitor connection | Limits listed by Lenovo |
|---|---|---|
| DisplayPort 1.4 | DisplayPort cable to a monitor with DisplayPort; an appropriate adapter may be required for another input | Up to 3840×2160 at 60 Hz for listed integrated-graphics configurations |
| HDMI 1.4b | HDMI cable to an HDMI monitor or television | Up to 3840×2160 at 30 Hz, or 2560×1440 at 60 Hz, for listed integrated-graphics configurations |
Those resolution figures are connector-specific values in Lenovo’s specification table, not a guarantee for every processor, display path or monitor. The monitor, cable, graphics configuration and selected refresh rate all matter. For a 4K desktop where 60 Hz is important, DisplayPort is generally the more suitable first choice when both devices support it.

Do not mistake the front USB-C port for a video output
The front USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 connector is specified for data transfer. It should not be treated as a guaranteed display output. Some units have an optional rear USB-C connector with DisplayPort function, but that is a different, configuration-dependent port. Inspect the rear panel before buying a USB-C monitor cable or dock.
Adding a second or third display
Lenovo lists support for up to three independent displays using onboard and optional outputs. That is a family-level capability, not a promise that every boxed M75q Gen 2 has three usable video connectors. Optional rear configurations can include a VGA port, a second DisplayPort, a second HDMI, serial, or USB-C with DisplayPort function.
- Count the actual video outputs on your rear panel.
- Write down the input type on each monitor and the maximum resolution and refresh rate you need.
- Use the onboard HDMI and DisplayPort first, then verify that the optional connector is a display-capable port rather than a similar-looking data connector.
- Connect one screen, complete operating-system setup and install updates before adding the remaining screens.
- In the operating system’s display settings, choose Extend rather than Duplicate if you need separate workspaces.
If a screen remains blank, select the monitor’s correct input source, reseat both ends of the cable and test that monitor on a known-good output. Do not conclude that the PC supports three screens until the optional port and graphics path on your particular configuration have been confirmed.

4. Attach the keyboard, mouse and audio equipment
Connect a USB keyboard and mouse to the rear USB ports or the front USB-A port. Lenovo lists both wired and wireless keyboard-and-mouse configurations, as well as bundles with no keyboard or no mouse. For wireless sets, insert the receiver or pair the devices according to their instructions; Bluetooth availability depends on the installed wireless module.

A webcam or headset is optional for a home office; the computer’s specifications establish connectivity, not a requirement to purchase either accessory.
5. Connect the network: Ethernet or Wi-Fi
Wired Gigabit Ethernet
- Plug a network cable into the rear RJ-45 Ethernet port.
- Connect the other end to your router, switch or wall network jack.
- Wait for the link lights and let the operating system obtain an address automatically.
Gigabit Ethernet is listed for the M75q Gen 2 configurations. Wired networking is the simplest first-run method when the router is nearby and gives you a connection for updates without depending on wireless drivers.
Wireless networking
Wi-Fi is not guaranteed on an unknown used unit. Lenovo lists several Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 module options, along with a configuration that has no WLAN or Bluetooth hardware.
- Look for a WLAN module in the configuration record or confirm that Wi-Fi networks appear in the operating system.
- During first-run setup, select your home network, enter its password and accept the network profile appropriate for your home.
- If no wireless networks are shown, use Ethernet first and install the exact WLAN driver for the machine type, or use a compatible external adapter.
Do not buy an internal replacement module until you have checked the Hardware Maintenance Manual, antenna arrangement, supported part numbers and regional restrictions for your exact unit.
6. Start the installed operating system
Press the power button after the monitor and input devices are connected. The first-run screens depend on what Lenovo or a previous owner installed.

Windows
Follow the on-screen region, keyboard, network, account, privacy and update prompts. A M75q Gen 2 can be sold with Windows 11 or Windows 10 variants, but a model family name does not establish that a particular used machine includes Windows or a transferable license. If the computer has no operating system, Windows is not included merely because the chassis is capable of running it; obtain installation media and licensing through Microsoft’s current process.
Ubuntu or IGEL Linux
Complete the distribution’s own account, network and update prompts. Hardware support and driver steps can differ from Windows, so use the installed distribution’s documentation for printer, display and wireless setup.
No preloaded operating system
If the first boot shows no operating-system setup, stop and decide which system you are licensed and prepared to install. Back up any data already on the drive before changing partitions, and use the operating-system vendor’s current installation instructions rather than assuming a Lenovo recovery image is present.

7. Update firmware and drivers for the exact machine type
After reaching the desktop, connect to the network and open Lenovo Support for the complete machine type. The Hardware Maintenance Manual search result directs users to Lenovo Support for UEFI BIOS, driver and firmware updates.
- Enter the machine type or use Lenovo’s detection method.
- Read the release notes for each BIOS, firmware or driver package.
- Install chipset, graphics, network and audio drivers that match the installed operating system.
- Apply BIOS or firmware updates only when they are intended for that exact machine and the release notes justify the update.
- Keep the adapter connected and do not interrupt power during firmware installation.
- Restart and verify the display, network, audio and USB devices.
A BIOS update is not automatically necessary just because one exists. Model-specific compatibility and the release notes should determine whether to install it.
8. Configure the desktop for everyday work
Set the main display
Open the operating system’s display settings, identify each screen, select the monitor you want as the primary display and choose a readable scale. Set each screen to a resolution and refresh rate supported by both the monitor and the connected output. If text looks soft, avoid running a non-native resolution unless you have a specific accessibility reason.

Set audio and microphone defaults
Choose the headset or speakers as the output device and the headset or webcam microphone as the input device. Use the 3.5 mm combo jack for a compatible four-pole headset; USB headsets appear as separate audio devices.

- Create or confirm a separate everyday user account rather than using an administrator account for every task.
- Set a strong sign-in method and store recovery information safely.
- Turn on the operating system’s automatic security updates.
- Configure a backup destination before storing important work locally.
- Record the machine type, serial number and adapter rating for future support.
9. Optional VESA mounting for a compact desk
If desk space is limited, Lenovo lists an optional VESA bracket kit supporting 75 mm and 100 mm mounting patterns. Mounting is not required for initial setup.
- Check the monitor’s VESA hole spacing and weight against the bracket’s specifications.
- Confirm that the bracket includes the correct screws and spacers for both the monitor and the Tiny chassis.
- Measure cable bend room, ventilation clearance and access to the power button before fastening anything.
- Mount the PC only to a surface or monitor arm rated for the combined load.
- Leave airflow openings unobstructed after installation.
Bracket contents and availability vary. Do not order solely from a photograph; verify the kit intended for the M75q Gen 2 and your monitor.
10. Memory and storage upgrades are optional
You do not need to open the chassis to create a basic home-office computer. Upgrade only when the current memory or storage is limiting your work, and confirm compatibility first.
| Component | Lenovo-listed capability | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | Two DDR4 SODIMM slots; up to 64 GB based on Lenovo’s tested offerings | Installed module count, capacity, speed, operating-system support and the exact machine type |
| Solid-state storage | One M.2 SSD option | Supported M.2 size, interface and the mounting screw or bracket |
| 2.5-inch storage | One 2.5-inch drive bay subject to listed supported options | Drive thickness, caddy, cable and whether the chassis already contains the required bracket |
Back up your files before opening the PC. Disconnect power, follow the Hardware Maintenance Manual’s service procedure and protect components from static discharge. “Up to 64 GB” describes Lenovo’s tested offerings, not a guarantee that every memory combination will work at that capacity.

11. Common setup problems and fixes
No picture after pressing the power button
- Confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by the cable.
- Reseat the HDMI or DisplayPort cable at both ends.
- Try the other standard video output on the PC.
- If using a rear optional connector, verify that it is a display-capable option for this unit.
- Test with one monitor only until the operating system and graphics driver are working.
The monitor shows an unsupported mode
Boot with a simpler resolution or connect a display that can show the operating system’s default mode. Then select a resolution and refresh rate supported by the monitor and the specific output. Remember that Lenovo lists HDMI 4K at 30 Hz, while DisplayPort is listed up to 4K at 60 Hz for applicable integrated-graphics configurations.

- BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices
Wi-Fi is missing
Check whether the unit was configured without WLAN/Bluetooth. Connect Ethernet, install the correct wireless driver and inspect Device Manager or the equivalent hardware list. If no internal module is installed, Wi-Fi requires compatible additional hardware.
The box has no keyboard, mouse or cable
This can be normal because Lenovo lists “None” for some accessory selections. Buy only what is missing: an HDMI cable for an HDMI monitor, or a DisplayPort cable when both devices support DisplayPort, plus a USB keyboard and mouse if required.
The computer shuts down or will not start
Check the wall outlet, power-strip switch, DC connection and adapter rating. Use the adapter supplied for that unit or a model-specific replacement confirmed by Lenovo. Do not substitute an unknown 65 W or 90 W adapter.
A BIOS update fails or behaves unexpectedly
Stop repeated attempts, record the machine type and current BIOS version, and consult Lenovo Support and the Hardware Maintenance Manual. Firmware packages are model-specific; do not use a file intended for another ThinkCentre variant.
12. A practical first-day checklist
- Machine type and serial number recorded.
- Installed operating system identified.
- Correct 65 W or 90 W adapter confirmed.
- Ventilation clear and chassis stable.
- Monitor connected to HDMI or DisplayPort, with the monitor input selected.
- Keyboard and mouse connected or paired.
- Ethernet connected, or WLAN hardware confirmed before attempting Wi-Fi.
- Operating-system account, network and privacy setup completed.
- Lenovo drivers and firmware checked for the exact machine type.
- Display, audio, webcam and printer tested.
- Automatic security updates and a backup plan enabled.
- Optional VESA, memory or storage purchases postponed until compatibility is verified.
What a correctly configured home-office setup looks like
A finished M75q Gen 2 installation has a clear airflow path, its supplied power adapter, a monitor attached to a confirmed video output, working keyboard and mouse, and a verified Ethernet or WLAN connection. The installed operating system is activated or otherwise properly licensed, model-specific drivers are current, and the user has tested display, audio and backup settings. Optional mounting and upgrades can then be treated as deliberate improvements rather than prerequisites.
