A secure Ledger setup has four non-negotiable checks: buy from Ledger or an authorized reseller, initialize the device yourself, write the recovery phrase only from the device’s secure screen, and complete Genuine Check before using it. Never use a device that arrives with a PIN or recovery phrase, and never type your recovery phrase into a phone, computer, app, website or support form.
What a safe Ledger setup looks like
A Ledger hardware wallet is controlled through the device, its PIN and its Secret Recovery Phrase. Ledger states that it does not hold your assets and that access does not depend on an account, email address or password. The private keys remain in the device’s Secure Element, while Ledger Wallet on your computer or phone provides the management interface.

The safest setup sequence is:
- Inspect the seller, shipping package and device before connecting it.
- Install Ledger Wallet only from Ledger’s official setup page or the official iOS or Android store.
- Connect the device, unlock it and install the current Ledger OS or firmware when prompted.
- Create your own PIN on the device.
- Let the device generate a new Secret Recovery Phrase and write it down offline.
- Confirm the phrase on the device.
- Run Genuine Check in Ledger Wallet.
- Read every transaction destination and amount on the device screen before approving.
Each step addresses a different risk. A reputable seller reduces supply-chain risk; device-generated words protect the wallet from a phrase prepared by somebody else; Genuine Check tests the Secure Element cryptographically; and the secure screen protects you from a computer or phone displaying a substituted transaction.
Before you connect the wallet: inspect the purchase
Choose a controlled sales channel
Prefer Ledger.com or a Ledger-authorized reseller. Ledger lists official Amazon storefronts in some markets, but an Amazon listing is not automatically authorized simply because it appears on Amazon. Check the seller shown on the listing, the country or market in which the storefront is official, and whether the listing is fulfilled or supplied by a party you can verify. If you cannot establish that the seller is authorized, treat the purchase as higher risk.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Do not let a low price or a seller’s message override the security process. A hardware wallet can look new while having been handled, replaced or prepared by someone else.
Look for tampering without treating the box as proof
Examine the shipping package, retail packaging and device for signs that they were opened, replaced or altered. A sealed-looking box is not proof of authenticity: a device must pass Genuine Check and must arrive uninitialized. If anything appears opened or modified, stop before connecting it and contact Ledger Support through Ledger’s official support route.
Reject any pre-initialized device
A new device must ask you to choose a PIN and must generate a new recovery phrase for you. Stop immediately if the package includes a PIN, a recovery phrase, instructions to use particular words, or a device that is already configured. Do not try to “change” a phrase supplied by a seller; return or report the device instead.

Install Ledger Wallet without falling for a fake update
Download Ledger Wallet from Ledger’s official device-setup page or from the official iOS or Android store listing. Do not use a download link sent by a seller, a social-media account, an unsolicited support contact or a message claiming that an urgent update is required. Phishing pages commonly imitate a wallet app and then ask for the recovery phrase.
Before entering any sensitive information, check that you are using the official application you intentionally installed. The app is a coordinator: it does not replace the device’s secure screen, and legitimate onboarding will not require you to type the recovery phrase into the app.
Connect, update and install only the apps you need
- Open Ledger Wallet on the computer or phone you intend to use.
- Connect the Ledger device and unlock it with the PIN you created on the device.
- Follow the onboarding prompts and install the current Ledger OS or firmware when the app offers it.
- Open My Ledger and install the asset apps required for the assets you intend to manage.
Keep the device connected during an update and follow the exact prompts shown by Ledger Wallet and on the device. Do not interrupt a firmware operation because another application, browser tab or message tells you to do so. Install only the apps you actually need; adding an app does not give the app access to your recovery phrase.
Firmware and asset compatibility can change by model, operating system, country and product generation. If an asset or app is not offered for your model, do not install an unofficial substitute or follow a message that asks you to bypass Ledger Wallet.

Create a PIN that only you know
The device asks you to create and confirm a PIN during first-time setup. Choose it on the device and keep it private. Never accept a PIN that arrived in the box or was supplied by a seller or support contact.
Avoid an easily guessed sequence and do not reuse a code that somebody who handles your phone, computer or mail could already know. The PIN protects access to the device; it is not a replacement for the recovery phrase. Keep the two secrets separate, and do not write them together in a way that lets a finder identify both.
Generate and record the Secret Recovery Phrase
Let the device generate the words
For a new wallet, the Ledger device generates the Secret Recovery Phrase and displays each word on its secure screen. The phrase is the backup that can recreate access to the wallet. Anyone who obtains it can potentially control the associated accounts, so treat it as the highest-value secret in the setup.
Write every word on the supplied recovery sheet, in the exact order shown by the device. Check spelling as you copy. Do not use a phrase supplied by a seller, printed in the box or displayed on a computer or phone.

Keep the backup offline and physically protected
Store the written phrase where it is protected from theft, loss, fire, water and casual access. Make your storage decision before funding the wallet, and limit knowledge of the location to people you trust with the assets. A second physical copy can improve resilience against a single damaged sheet, but every copy increases the number of places an attacker could find the phrase.
Do not photograph or scan the phrase. Do not type it into a computer, phone, password manager, cloud drive, notes application or web form. Do not send it to Ledger Support or to anyone claiming to help with setup. Ledger’s explicit warning is: Furthermore, a genuine Ledger signer never asks you to enter your recovery phrase on a computer, phone, app, or website.
Understand the valid phrase lengths
| Phrase length | What to check |
|---|---|
| 12 words | Write all 12 words in order and preserve the exact spelling. |
| 18 words | Write all 18 words in order and preserve the exact spelling. |
| 24 words | Write all 24 words in order and preserve the exact spelling. |
The device determines the phrase length for the wallet it creates. Do not add, remove or rearrange words to make a phrase fit a different length.

Confirm the phrase on the device
During onboarding, the device asks you to select words from the phrase so it can check that you recorded them correctly. Complete this test on the device, not in Ledger Wallet. A successful confirmation means the words you recorded match the device’s generated backup at that point in setup.

Run Genuine Check and interpret the result correctly
What the check does
Ledger Wallet sends a challenge to the device. The genuine Secure Element returns a cryptographic signature, which Ledger verifies. The app should report that the device is genuine. Run this check as part of initial setup, before depositing assets or relying on the wallet.
What the check does not do
Genuine Check is an authenticity test for the Secure Element, not a complete forensic inspection of every component. Ledger cautions that it cannot detect every unauthorized physical modification when the original Secure Element remains intact. It also cannot reconstruct a seller’s handling history. That is why purchase channel, package inspection and an uninitialized device still matter.
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase from Ledger or an authorized reseller | Reduces the risk introduced by an unknown supply chain. | Does not replace the device’s own authenticity check. |
| Intact-looking packaging | Shows no obvious external tampering. | Does not prove that the device or its components were never altered. |
| No preset PIN or phrase | Shows that the device has not been handed over with somebody else’s wallet credentials. | Does not by itself prove the device is genuine. |
| Successful Genuine Check | Confirms the cryptographic identity of the Secure Element. | Does not detect every physical modification or validate the seller’s handling history. |
If Genuine Check fails, stop using the device for assets and contact Ledger Support through the official channel. Do not attempt to repair the result by entering a recovery phrase or following instructions from an unsolicited contact.

When you send assets, Ledger says the keys remain in the Secure Element and the transaction requires physical approval on the device. The computer or phone display is not sufficient evidence of what you are signing.
- Prepare the transaction in Ledger Wallet or the compatible service you intentionally opened.
- Read the destination address shown on the Ledger device screen, not just the address shown on the computer or phone.
- Read the amount and any other transaction details displayed on the device.
- Reject the transaction if the address, amount or details differ from your intent.
- Approve only by physically confirming on the device.
Malware can alter an address in a clipboard, browser or desktop display. The secure-screen comparison is the point at which you can catch that substitution before signing.

Can you trust a Ledger bought on Amazon?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the specific storefront and the device’s behavior, not on Amazon’s name alone. Ledger lists official Amazon storefronts in some markets. Confirm that your country’s listing is one of those official storefronts and identify the actual seller. Marketplace inventory from an unauthorized seller adds supply-chain risk.
After delivery, apply all three tests:
- The package and device show no sign of opening or alteration.
- The device arrives without a preset PIN, recovery phrase or existing wallet.
- Ledger Wallet completes Genuine Check successfully.
Failure of any one test is a reason to stop and contact Ledger Support. Do not deposit funds first and investigate later. If you cannot verify the storefront or the device’s history, buying directly from Ledger or a clearly authorized reseller is the lower-risk choice.
Recovery and failure procedures
If the recovery check fails
Ledger allows failed checks to be retried. Before retrying, verify the phrase length—12, 18 or 24 words—then check the exact order, spelling and whether every word belongs to the BIP39 word list. Do not “correct” a word by guessing from memory or by asking an online service to identify it.
If the check continues to fail, assume the backup may be wrong. While you still have access to the initialized device, follow Ledger’s recovery procedure: move the assets to accounts controlled by a newly generated phrase, then create and verify the new backup. Do not expose the old phrase while troubleshooting.
If the device is lost or stops working
Restore the wallet on a replacement Ledger using the Secret Recovery Phrase. Complete the restoration on the device and keep the phrase offline. Ledger warns against entering it into an online wallet. A replacement device does not need the original hardware to recreate the accounts, but it does require the correct phrase and order.
If you suspect the phrase was exposed
Treat the wallet as compromised. While you still control the device, move assets to accounts controlled by a newly generated phrase. Then reset the device and set it up as new, creating and recording a fresh phrase. Follow Ledger Support’s current procedure for the reset and never disclose the old phrase to anyone.
Operating checklist after setup
- Keep the recovery sheet offline and physically protected.
- Keep the PIN private and do not store it with the phrase.
- Install Ledger Wallet only from Ledger’s official setup page or official mobile-store listing.
- Use My Ledger for firmware and required asset-app installation.
- Treat unsolicited update or support messages as phishing attempts.
- Run transaction checks on the device screen every time.
- Recheck the authorized seller and country storefront before buying another device.
- Review the written phrase periodically for legibility without photographing or digitizing it.
Model and connectivity checks before buying
Ledger models differ by secure-screen type, transaction readability, supported operating systems, mobile or desktop connectivity, firmware and asset compatibility, physical backup options, size and portability. Those specifications and availability can change by country and product generation. Compare the current model information at the time of purchase, then confirm that the model supports the operating system, connection method and assets you plan to use.
Regardless of model, the security decisions do not change: use an authorized channel, initialize the device yourself, keep the phrase offline, complete Genuine Check and verify transaction details on the device.
When setup is complete
Your Ledger is ready for use only after it has a PIN you chose, a device-generated phrase you recorded and confirmed, a successful Genuine Check and a transaction-approval habit based on the secure screen. The strongest protection is procedural: no seller-supplied credentials, no digital copy of the phrase, no approval based solely on a computer or phone, and no exceptions for an urgent message or a suspicious support request.
