Set up a Ledger mobile wallet by initializing the hardware device itself, writing down its device-generated 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase offline, pairing the device with the official Ledger Wallet app, and approving every address and transaction on the Ledger screen. The phone is an interface; the private keys stay in the Ledger device’s Secure Element.

The most important rule is simple: never type the recovery phrase into your phone, a website, cloud storage, or a support conversation. Anyone who obtains those words can control the accounts derived from them.

What Ledger Wallet does on a phone

Ledger Wallet is the current name of Ledger Live. It lets you view accounts, install blockchain apps, receive assets, and prepare transactions from a mobile device. It is not the vault that holds your private keys. Those keys remain inside the Ledger hardware wallet’s Secure Element, and a transaction cannot execute until you review and physically approve it on the device.

This separation changes what a compromised phone can do. Malware or a fake mobile app may display a wrong address or transaction, so you must compare the information on the Ledger’s trusted screen before approving. However, the phone does not receive the private keys during ordinary pairing or account use. A person who steals only the phone still should not be able to sign transactions without the hardware device and its PIN.

  • Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Ledger’s product guidance states that every transaction must be reviewed and physically approved on the Ledger device before it executes. Treat that screen as the final authority, not the wording or address shown only in the phone app.

What you need before starting

Use an authentic, untampered device

Buy the hardware wallet from Ledger or an authorized, reputable seller. Ledger’s hardware guidance says the package and hardware should be sealed and tamper-resistant. Do not initialize a device that arrives with a prewritten recovery phrase, an unexplained PIN, broken seals, or signs that it has already been used. A genuine setup generates the recovery phrase on the device for you; a seller or another person must never supply it.

The Ledger Nano X is a relevant choice for mobile use because it supports Bluetooth pairing. Model support, operating-system requirements, and firmware behavior can change, so check the compatibility information shown by Ledger Wallet when you set up rather than assuming that every Ledger model works with every phone.

Prepare the phone and connection method

  • An iPhone requires Bluetooth pairing with a supported Ledger model, such as the Nano X.
  • Android can use Bluetooth with supported models or a wired USB OTG data connection.
  • A wired Android connection needs a USB OTG cable that transfers data. A charge-only cable cannot carry the communication required for setup.
  • Have a private, clean place for writing the recovery phrase. Do not use a camera, notes app, printer, screenshot, cloud drive, password manager, or email as the backup.

Download the real Ledger Wallet app

Install the app only from Ledger’s official download page: https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live. Ledger says this is the only place to download the official Ledger Wallet application. On a phone, follow the store link reached from that page rather than choosing an app from an advertisement, a message, or a search result with a similar name.

Before opening the app, check the publisher, spelling, and download source. Fake wallet apps commonly copy logos and screen designs, then ask for the recovery phrase under the pretext of verification or restoration. The real app does not need your 24 words to pair with a newly initialized hardware wallet.

Keep the app and the phone’s operating system updated. Ledger support documentation notes that an outdated device app or Ledger OS can prevent account operations, so update before adding accounts or sending funds. Install updates through the official app and device channels, not through links in unsolicited messages.

Initialize the Ledger hardware wallet

Perform initialization on the Ledger itself, not in the mobile app. The device must generate the recovery phrase so no seller, website, or phone process can know it in advance.

Ledger Nano Gen5 - Crypto Wallet - Securely Buy Digital Assets - Black | Easy-to-use, customizabe, 2.8" touchcreen signer with private backup and scam protection
  • More than just crypto: confirm your device is authentic with Genuine Check, manage all your logins with Ledger Security Key, detect common scams with Transaction Check and more.
  • Industry-defining security: battle-tested by the Donjon's white hat hackers, protected by the Secure Element, and powered by Ledger OS.
  • Connect effortlessly with Ledger Wallet: pair your secure Ledger signer with the all in one Ledger Wallet crypto app to manage thousands of digital assets across multiple devices and accounts with Ledger Sync from a single, secure dashboard.
  • Playful, user-friendly design: monitor the market, compare rates and Clear Sign all transactions on the secure 2.8'' anti-glare, scratch-resistant touchscreen.
  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
  1. Power on and choose setup on the device. Select the option to configure the Ledger as a new device. If it asks you to enter a phrase supplied by someone else, stop; that is not a safe new-device setup.
  2. Create a PIN on the Ledger screen. Enter and confirm a PIN directly on the hardware. Do not tell it to another person or type it into the phone. The PIN unlocks that physical device; it is not a replacement for the recovery phrase.
  3. Let the device display its Secret Recovery Phrase. The standard backup is 24 words. Write every word, in order, on the supplied recovery sheet or another durable offline medium while reading the Ledger screen.
  4. Confirm the words on the device. The Ledger will test entries from the phrase. Select the requested words on the hardware screen, checking your written backup against the device rather than relying on memory.
  5. Store the backup privately. Keep the written phrase where other people cannot see, photograph, copy, or remove it. Never share the 24 words with anyone under any circumstances, including a person claiming to be Ledger support.

The recovery phrase is the master backup for the accounts derived from the device. A phone passcode, app password, or PIN does not restore those accounts. Conversely, anyone who obtains the 24 words can restore the wallet on another compatible device and control the assets, even if your original Ledger remains locked.

Pair the Ledger with an iPhone or Android phone

iPhone: Bluetooth pairing

For iPhone, use Bluetooth with a supported Ledger model such as the Nano X; iPhone pairing is Bluetooth-only in the documented mobile setup. Turn on Bluetooth on both the phone and Ledger, then open Ledger Wallet and go to My Ledger to add the device.

  1. Unlock the Ledger with its PIN and keep it near the phone.
  2. In Ledger Wallet, open My Ledger and choose the option to add or connect a device.
  3. Select the detected Ledger model and begin pairing.
  4. Compare the pairing code shown by the phone with the code shown on the Ledger screen. Do not confirm if they differ.
  5. Confirm the matching code on the Ledger itself. The app should then show the device as connected.

Pairing codes are a protection against connecting to the wrong nearby device. A message, call, or support chat cannot legitimately ask you to disclose the recovery phrase to complete Bluetooth pairing.

Android: Bluetooth or USB OTG

Android supports Bluetooth on supported Ledger models. It can also use a wired USB OTG connection when the phone and Ledger support that mode. For wired setup, connect a data-capable OTG cable; a cable that only supplies power will not work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enable Bluetooth if you are using the wireless method, or connect the Ledger with the compatible USB OTG data cable.
  2. Open Ledger Wallet, choose My Ledger, and select add or connect a device.
  3. If Android requests location permission for Bluetooth discovery, grant the permission for the pairing process. Android may require it even though the wallet is not using location as a financial credential.
  4. Compare the pairing codes on both screens and confirm the matching code on the Ledger.

If Android does not detect a wired device, disconnect and check that the cable supports data and that the phone supports USB OTG. Do not infer that a charging icon means the connection is ready for wallet communication.

Install a blockchain app and add your first account

A Ledger device uses separate apps for different blockchain networks. Installing a network app does not move private keys to the phone; it enables the hardware to derive and sign accounts for that network.

  1. Unlock the Ledger and open My Ledger in Ledger Wallet.
  2. Choose the blockchain network you intend to use and install its app on the hardware device. Keep the Ledger connected until installation finishes.
  3. Open Accounts in Ledger Wallet and select Add account.
  4. Choose the same network, unlock the Ledger when requested, and open that network’s app on the device.
  5. Allow Ledger Wallet to synchronize and display the account, then confirm the account on the Ledger if prompted.

Use the network that matches the asset and transaction you intend to make. Sending through the wrong network can make funds difficult or impossible to recover; the network name and fee details shown during signing are therefore part of the security check, not decorative information.

Verify addresses and transactions on the Ledger screen

Receiving funds

When you choose Receive, Ledger Wallet presents an address and asks the hardware to verify it. Compare the complete address shown in the app with the address displayed on the Ledger screen. Approve the address on the device only when every character you can check matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copying an address from a phone can be unsafe if malware replaces clipboard contents. The hardware confirmation is the meaningful check. If the app address and Ledger address do not match, reject the request, close the flow, and investigate before giving anyone an address.

Sending funds

Start a send only when you initiated it and understand the destination. Before approving on the Ledger, review:

  • the destination address;
  • the amount and asset;
  • the network or chain;
  • the network fee and any displayed fee parameters.

Compare the destination with a trusted copy of the recipient’s address. If an unsolicited message tells you to send funds to unlock, verify, secure, or restore an account, cancel instead. Approve only after the Ledger screen agrees with what you intended. The phone’s preview is not a substitute for the hardware review.

Recognize phishing and fake Ledger requests

Wallet theft usually begins with a request for the recovery phrase, not with a failure of Bluetooth. Ledger says it will never ask for your 24 words. Treat any of the following as a likely phishing attempt:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • a phone app, website, email, or support agent requesting the 24 words;
  • a prompt to enter the phrase to verify, synchronize, secure, or restore the wallet;
  • an unsolicited message claiming that an account is suspended or at risk unless you sign immediately;
  • a fake Ledger app distributed through an advertisement, direct message, or unofficial download page;
  • an unexpected NFT or token containing a link or instructions to connect and approve a transaction;
  • a request to reveal a PIN, pairing code, or device-screen contents to someone assisting remotely.

Do not click the link, connect the wallet, or reply with information. Navigate to the official Ledger site yourself if you need documentation. A legitimate troubleshooting process can ask which model or operating system you use, but it does not need the recovery phrase to diagnose pairing or account problems.

Keep the setup secure after pairing

Protect physical access

Store the Ledger separately from the written recovery phrase when practical, so a single theft does not provide both the device and its backup. Do not leave the unlocked device unattended. Examine the address and transaction details on the hardware every time, even when sending to a familiar recipient.

Update before important operations

Ledger Wallet and Ledger OS should be kept current before adding accounts or transacting. An outdated app or device operating system can block account operations and may prevent the app from recognizing a required network app. Apply updates through the official interfaces, keep the Ledger connected as instructed, and do not interrupt an update without a clear recovery path.

Do not import a hot-wallet seed

Do not import an existing software-wallet seed into the Ledger as a shortcut. Ledger’s recovery guidance warns that doing so undermines the security assumptions of a hardware wallet because the seed was already exposed to a phone or computer. For a genuinely isolated setup, initialize the Ledger and use the phrase it generates.

What to do if the Ledger is lost or damaged

The 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase can restore access to the derived accounts on a replacement Ledger. Obtain a genuine replacement, choose the device’s recovery option, and enter the phrase on the hardware itself according to its setup flow. Never type the phrase into Ledger Wallet, a browser, a website, or a support chat.

Restoration transfers control to whoever knows the phrase. If you suspect that anyone saw, photographed, copied, or entered it, assume the accounts are compromised. Move assets to accounts created from a newly initialized, uncompromised Ledger as soon as you can do so safely, and do not continue treating the exposed phrase as a secret.

Losing the physical device alone does not reveal the phrase. Losing the phrase, however, removes the protection that the hardware device is meant to provide.

Connection and setup troubleshooting

The phone cannot find the Ledger

  • Confirm that the Ledger is powered on, unlocked, and showing the appropriate connection state.
  • For Bluetooth, enable Bluetooth on both devices and grant Android’s requested discovery permission when applicable.
  • Keep the devices close and remove competing Bluetooth connections.
  • For Android OTG, replace a charge-only cable with a data-capable OTG cable and confirm that the phone supports OTG.
  • Close and reopen Ledger Wallet, then check My Ledger again.

The pairing codes do not match

Reject the pairing immediately. Do not approve a code mismatch simply to make setup continue. Restart pairing from My Ledger and verify that the code on the Ledger and phone is identical before confirming on the hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account installation or synchronization is blocked

Check that Ledger Wallet and Ledger OS are current, that the Ledger is unlocked, and that the correct blockchain app is installed on the hardware. Reconnect only through the app’s My Ledger flow. If a message claims that entering the recovery phrase will fix synchronization, close it; that is not a legitimate remedy.

The receiving address is different

Do not share or use the address until the discrepancy is resolved. Reject the address on the Ledger, cancel the receive flow, and start again from the account. For a send, reject the transaction if any destination, amount, network, or fee shown on the Ledger differs from your intent.

iPhone and Android connection methods compared

Phone Supported connection in the documented setup Important requirement What to verify
iPhone Bluetooth with a supported Ledger model such as Nano X Bluetooth enabled on both devices Pairing codes must match on the phone and Ledger before confirmation
Android Bluetooth with supported models, or wired USB OTG Wired use requires a data-capable OTG cable; Android may request location permission for Bluetooth discovery Use the connection shown in My Ledger and confirm the matching pairing code on the hardware

Compatibility is model- and software-dependent. Check the current device options presented by Ledger Wallet rather than assuming that a connection available on one phone or Ledger model is available on another.

Final secure-setup checklist

  • The device came from Ledger or a reputable authorized seller and did not appear tampered with.
  • The app was downloaded through Ledger’s official page, https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live.
  • The Ledger generated the 24-word phrase during your own initialization.
  • The phrase is written offline and has never been entered into a phone, website, cloud service, or support conversation.
  • The PIN was created and entered on the Ledger itself.
  • Bluetooth pairing codes were compared on both screens, or the Android OTG cable was confirmed to carry data.
  • The correct blockchain app and account were added through My Ledger and Accounts.
  • Receiving addresses and every outgoing transaction were checked on the Ledger screen.
  • Unexpected messages, NFTs, links, and requests to verify or restore with the phrase were ignored.
  • Ledger Wallet and Ledger OS are current before adding accounts or transacting.
