A Kindle can be configured for a quieter reading session in a few stages: identify the exact model, connect it to Wi‑Fi, register it to an Amazon account, set the book display to suit your eyes, download books before going offline, and deal separately with any sponsored screens. “Distraction-free” is a personal configuration goal, not a Kindle feature that guarantees concentration. The controls that change a book’s typography are different from the advertising settings on the lock and Home screens.
Use the guide for your specific Kindle generation when a menu or control is not where this article describes it. The base Kindle, Paperwhite, Colorsoft, Scribe, and older generations do not all expose the same settings.
What you need before turning on the Kindle
Standard setup uses the Kindle itself, an Amazon account, the account credentials, and a Wi‑Fi network name and password. Have those details available before you begin. A charging cable or power adapter may be useful if the device needs power, but charging accessories are not part of the distraction settings and vary by model.

Amazon maintains separate guides for the base Kindle, Paperwhite, Colorsoft, Scribe, and earlier generations.
- Amazon account: the device must be registered to an Amazon account before you can use that account’s Kindle library.
- Wi‑Fi details: the normal setup path connects the e-reader to Wi‑Fi and asks for the network password.
- Optional phone: if you want Amazon’s Simple Setup, you need the Kindle app on iOS or Android and a phone with Bluetooth enabled.
Amazon’s concise instruction is: “Turn on your Kindle E-Reader and follow the on-screen instructions to set it up.” The screens below put that instruction into a complete reading-focused sequence.
Step 1: identify the model before choosing menus
Kindle settings are not identical across generations. Before following a menu path, check the model name in the device information screen or on the original packaging, then open the user guide for that model. This prevents you from searching for a control that your edition does not include.

Why the model matters
- The available typography and layout controls can differ by model.
- Connection controls used to disable wireless access are model-specific.
- Amazon’s setup instructions and user guides are separated by device family and generation.
- Some e-readers may include sponsored screens, while others may not.
When this article says “open the Aa/Page Display menu” or “open connection controls,” use the equivalent label in your model’s guide if the wording differs.
Step 2: choose a setup method
Every Kindle can be configured directly on the e-reader. Some owners can instead use Simple Setup through the Kindle app. The choice is mainly about convenience and prerequisites, not reading quality.
| Method | What you do | Requirements | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set up on this Kindle | Enter the language, location, Wi‑Fi details, and account information on the e-reader. | Kindle, Amazon account credentials, Wi‑Fi name and password. | You want to complete setup without relying on a phone. |
| Set up with your phone (Simple Setup) | Let the Kindle app transfer detected account and saved Wi‑Fi information to the e-reader. | Kindle app on iOS or Android, Amazon Device Simple Setup enabled, Bluetooth on; Android also requires Location Services. | Your phone already has the correct Amazon account and network saved. |
Simple Setup is optional. If its requirements are unavailable, choose Set up on this Kindle and continue on the e-reader.
Step 3: complete direct setup on the Kindle
- Turn on the e-reader. Follow the startup screens until the language choice appears.
- Select your language and location. Confirm the region and language shown on screen.
- Choose “Set up on this Kindle.” This keeps the process on the e-reader rather than handing it to a phone.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi. Select your network, enter its password, and wait for the connection to complete.
- Register the device. Sign in with the Amazon account you want associated with this Kindle and follow the onscreen registration prompts.
- Allow the initial library synchronization to finish. Once the account is registered and the device is online, let the Kindle complete its normal setup and library update before changing reading preferences.
Registration is not optional if you want this Kindle to access the account’s books. If the password is rejected, verify that you are using the intended Amazon account and that the Kindle is connected to the correct Wi‑Fi network before trying again.
Step 4: use Simple Setup with an iPhone or Android phone
Simple Setup can save typing when the Kindle app already knows your Amazon account and Wi‑Fi network. It does not remove the need to register the Kindle; it helps transfer the information used during registration.
- Install or open the Kindle app on your iOS or Android phone.
- Enable Amazon Device Simple Setup in the app’s settings if it is not already enabled.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
- If the phone is Android, turn on Location Services as well. This is an additional Android requirement for Simple Setup.
- Turn on the Kindle and select “Set up with your phone.”
- Keep the phone near the Kindle while the app detects the device and transfers the available account and saved Wi‑Fi information.
- Confirm the onscreen registration steps on the Kindle and in the app.
If the Kindle is not detected, check Bluetooth first, then confirm that Simple Setup is enabled in the app. On Android, check Location Services. You can abandon the phone path and return to direct setup if the app cannot transfer the details.

Step 5: set the book display for comfortable, low-interruption reading
Display settings affect the appearance of the book you are reading. They do not remove Home-screen promotions or other device-level elements. Open a book, tap the top of the screen, and open the Aa or Page Display menu. The exact controls depend on the Kindle model.
Typography controls
- Font: choose a typeface that remains easy to recognize at your preferred size.
- Font size: increase it until you can read without repeatedly refocusing or holding the device unusually close.
- Boldness: adjust stroke weight when the default text looks too light or too heavy.
Page layout controls
- Line spacing: add or remove vertical space between lines.
- Paragraph spacing: make paragraph breaks more or less pronounced.
- Margins: change the width of the text block.
- Orientation: use the available portrait or landscape option if your model supports it.
- Alignment: select the available text-alignment choices.
- Page background: choose an available background option on models that provide one.
Progress, clock, and themes
- Progress display: choose whether the book shows reading progress, when that option is available.
- Clock: show or hide the clock according to whether time information helps or distracts you.
- Saved themes: store a preferred combination of typography and layout on models that support themes, so you can restore it without adjusting every control again.
Change one setting at a time and read several pages before changing another. A larger font, wider line spacing, or narrower text block can make a session more comfortable, but each choice also changes how much text appears on a page. There is no universally “focused” combination; the useful configuration is the one that lets you continue reading without squinting, losing your place, or constantly reopening the display menu.
Step 6: download books before you plan to read offline
An offline session starts with an online preparation step. Amazon states that an internet connection is required to purchase, download, or sync content. Open your library while connected, download the books you expect to read, and wait for each title to finish before leaving Wi‑Fi.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi.
- Open the Kindle library and select each title you want available.
- Wait for the download or sync to finish. Do not assume a cover in the library means the complete book is stored locally.
- Open at least one downloaded title to confirm that it loads correctly.
- Use your model’s connection controls to turn wireless access off for the reading session if you want to remove network interruptions.
Turning wireless access off does not create books that were never downloaded. It only prevents the Kindle from using the connection during that session. Reconnect later when you need to purchase, download, or synchronize content.
Step 7: handle sponsored screens separately
Some Kindle e-readers include sponsored screens on the lock screen and Home screen. These are separate from in-book typography and layout. Changing the font, margins, or progress display will not remove them.
Amazon documents a one-time paid removal route for devices with offers:
- Open Manage Your Devices in your Amazon account.
- Select Devices.
- Choose the relevant Kindle.
- Open Special Offers.
- Select Remove offers.
- Review the charge shown before payment and confirm only if you want to proceed.
The amount is shown during the removal process and can vary by the account or device context. This is a separate purchase from books and does not change the reading-display controls inside a title.

Compare the two setup paths before you start
Direct setup is the dependable choice when you have the Wi‑Fi password and Amazon credentials but do not want to involve another device. It also makes troubleshooting straightforward because every step appears on the Kindle. Phone-assisted Simple Setup is faster when the Kindle app is already signed in to the correct account and the phone has the right network saved. Its convenience depends on prerequisites: Amazon Device Simple Setup must be enabled, Bluetooth must be on, and Android phones additionally need Location Services.

The important decision is whether you prefer entering details on the Kindle or transferring saved details from a nearby phone. If the account shown in the app is not the account that should own the Kindle, use direct setup or sign out and correct the app first; otherwise the device may be registered to the wrong library.
Model and generation checks that prevent avoidable confusion
Do not assume that a menu shown on a newer Kindle exists on an older one. Amazon separates its quick-start instructions and user guides by family and generation, including the base Kindle, Paperwhite, Colorsoft, Scribe, and earlier models. The Aa/Page Display menu is also model-dependent: one device may offer a setting that another omits or labels differently.
The same caution applies to wireless controls and sponsored screens. Look up the connection procedure for the exact model before planning an offline session, and check whether the device has offers before budgeting for removal. Model identification is especially useful when helping someone else set up a Kindle, because two devices that look similar can expose different options.
A practical distraction-minimizing configuration
Once setup is complete, use a small, deliberate configuration rather than changing every available option.

- Download the book while online.
- Set the font, size, boldness, spacing, and margins in the Aa/Page Display menu.
- Choose whether the clock and progress indicator help you or pull your attention away.
- Turn wireless access off through the controls available for your model if you do not need synchronization during the session.
During the session
- Open the book directly instead of browsing the library repeatedly.
- Keep the same saved theme or layout until the session ends.
- If text becomes uncomfortable, adjust only the setting causing the problem rather than rebuilding the entire page.
After the session
Reconnect when you need new books or synchronization. If you changed a display setting temporarily, restore your saved theme or preferred values before the next session.
This approach treats “distraction-free” as a set of choices: fewer trips to the library, no unnecessary wireless activity, and typography that does not force constant adjustment. It does not promise concentration, and it cannot control interruptions in the room around you.

Costs and accessories to consider
Existing Kindle owners can complete this configuration without buying an accessory. A compatible charging cable or power adapter may be useful if the device needs charging, but the correct accessory depends on the model; it is not required to change reading settings. If your Kindle has sponsored screens, Amazon shows the one-time removal charge immediately before payment through the Special Offers path. There is no single amount that applies to every account or device, so check the displayed price rather than relying on a quoted figure.
A new buyer should choose a compatible Kindle first and then follow the model-specific setup guide. The reading controls, offline preparation, and registration steps in this article apply to an owned device; they are not a reason to replace a working Kindle.

Troubleshooting setup and reading interruptions
The Kindle cannot join Wi‑Fi
- Recheck the network name and password.
- Move closer to the router and retry the connection.
- If you were using Simple Setup, switch to Set up on this Kindle and enter the network details manually.
Simple Setup does not find the Kindle
- Confirm that the Kindle app is installed and signed in to the intended Amazon account.
- Enable Amazon Device Simple Setup in the app.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- On Android, turn on Location Services.
- Keep the phone close to the Kindle while detection runs.
The Kindle registered to the wrong account
Check the account displayed in the Kindle app before using Simple Setup. If it is not the account whose library you need, stop and use the direct method with the correct credentials rather than completing registration with the wrong account.
A display option is missing
Check the guide for the exact model and generation. Amazon states that reading settings vary by model, so a missing control is not necessarily a fault.
A book is unavailable without a connection
Reconnect to Wi‑Fi and confirm that the title has completed its download or sync. Purchasing, downloading, and syncing require internet access; disabling wireless access before those actions finish leaves the title unavailable offline.
Sponsored screens remain after changing the text
That is expected because sponsored screens are not an in-book display setting. Use the Manage Your Devices → Devices → Kindle → Special Offers → Remove offers route if you want to pay for their removal.
Final setup checklist
- Model and generation identified.
- Amazon account and Wi‑Fi details ready.
- Language and location selected.
- Direct setup or Simple Setup completed.
- Kindle registered to the intended Amazon account.
- Font, size, boldness, spacing, margins, and other available Page Display controls adjusted.
- Books downloaded and opened while online.
- Wireless access disabled only after offline titles were prepared.
- Sponsored screens evaluated separately from reading settings.
With those choices made, the Kindle is configured around your reading habits rather than around its default presentation. The result can be a calmer reading environment, but concentration still depends on your surroundings and routine; no documented Kindle setting guarantees it.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, when Simple Setup is available. Use the Kindle app on iOS or Android, enable Amazon Device Simple Setup, turn on Bluetooth, and also enable Location Services on Android. Select Set up with your phone on the Kindle and follow the prompts.
How do I change the font size on a Kindle?
Open a book, tap the top of the screen, and open the Aa or Page Display menu. Choose Font size and adjust it. The menu and available controls vary by model.
How do I read Kindle books offline?
While connected to Wi‑Fi, download or sync each book and wait for the process to finish. Open a title to confirm it loads, then use your model’s connection controls to turn wireless access off. Reconnect when you need to purchase, download, or sync again.
Why is a Kindle display setting missing?
Amazon makes reading controls model-specific. Check the user guide for the exact Kindle family and generation; a control available on a newer device may not exist on yours.
How do I remove ads from a Kindle?
For a Kindle with sponsored screens, open Manage Your Devices in your Amazon account, choose Devices and the Kindle, open Special Offers, and select Remove offers. Amazon shows the one-time charge before you confirm payment.
Do font settings remove sponsored screens?
No. Font, spacing, margins, progress, and related Aa/Page Display controls change the book itself. Sponsored screens are device-level advertising and require the separate Special Offers removal process.
Recommended Free Tools
Which setup method is better, direct setup or Simple Setup?
Direct setup is best when you want to enter the account and Wi‑Fi details on the Kindle or do not have a phone ready. Simple Setup is convenient when the Kindle app already has the correct account and saved network, but it requires Bluetooth and, on Android, Location Services.
Quick Recap
The Bottom Line
For a calmer Kindle session, identify the exact model, register it over Wi‑Fi, tune the Aa/Page Display controls, download books before disconnecting, and treat sponsored screens as a separate paid setting. These steps reduce avoidable interruptions without promising a guaranteed level of concentration.
