You’ll need that account’s sign-in details and your Wi-Fi name and password. Screen names and steps vary by Kindle model, so use the guide for your generation if a prompt differs.
Before you start
- Your Kindle and its in-box accessories.
- An Amazon account, with its email address or phone number and password.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
Amazon’s 2026-release setup guide and 11th Generation guide describe similar core steps, but menus and sequence can differ between generations.

Choose how to set up the Kindle
| Setup path | What you need | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Set up on this Kindle | Kindle, Wi-Fi details, and Amazon account credentials | Enter details on the device when prompted. |
| Set up with your phone | A supported Kindle and the Kindle app on iOS or Android | Simple Setup may use the account and Wi-Fi information available through the app. Availability and requirements depend on model and app version. |
Set up and register on the Kindle
- Turn on the Kindle and select your preferred language.
- Choose Set up on this Kindle or, if offered and preferred, Set up with your phone.
- Connect to your Wi-Fi network and enter its password if asked.
- Follow the prompts to sign in to the Amazon account you want associated with the device. On some models, you may also be asked to select a location.
Once registration is complete, the Kindle is associated with that Amazon account. Amazon says deregistering disconnects the device from digital content and Amazon services until it is registered again; see Deregister Your Kindle E-Reader.
Use phone-assisted Simple Setup
On supported models, Simple Setup in the Kindle app can help detect the Amazon account and previously saved Wi-Fi passwords. The exact requirements are model-dependent. Amazon’s 11th Generation instructions say to enable Simple Setup in the app and turn on Bluetooth; on Android, Location Services are also required. The guide also advises updating the Kindle app. Follow the prompts shown by your device and app rather than assuming every model uses the same settings.

If Kindle registration fails
Amazon identifies incorrect device time, outdated Kindle software, Wi-Fi problems, and incorrect or stale account credentials as common things to check. Work through these checks in order:
- Check that the time displayed on the Kindle is correct.
- Check for and install a Kindle software update if one is available.
- Confirm the Kindle can connect to Wi-Fi. If Simple Setup is failing, check whether the Wi-Fi password saved to your account has changed.
- Verify your Amazon sign-in details. If you use more than one Amazon account, try signing in to the Amazon website on another device to confirm which credentials work.
- Restart the Kindle and try registration again.
For a forgotten password, use Amazon’s password recovery process. For Wi-Fi trouble, follow Kindle connection support. Amazon’s registration help describes incorrect time, outdated software, and incorrect passwords as frequent causes, but no single check is guaranteed to resolve every case.

Set up a Kindle that is changing owners
If the Kindle is still registered to its former owner, that owner should deregister it before handing it over. Amazon says this can be done in the device settings or through the account’s device-management page. For a sale or gift, Amazon recommends a factory reset.
A factory reset removes personal data, downloaded material, and material that has not synced, then deregisters the Kindle. Before resetting, the former owner should check that anything important has synced or is backed up. The new owner must register the Kindle to their own Amazon account to use it. See Amazon’s instructions for deregistering a Kindle and factory resetting a Kindle.
