Short answer: JDM: Ph4ntom Driver is not released yet, so its final control menus, default bindings, wheel support, and force-feedback behavior are not confirmed. The current Steam listing marks it as Full Controller Support, DualShock Controllers (USB Only), DualSense Controllers (USB Only), Steam Input API Supported, and Gamepad Preferred. Connect your intended device before launching through Steam; a wired USB gamepad is the safest choice based on the title-specific information available now.

What is confirmed for Ph4ntom Driver

Ph4ntom Driver has a Steam release date listed as “to be announced.” Steam also warns that system requirements may change before release. The control labels and behavior you eventually see can therefore differ from the current store metadata.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Current Steam metadata What it means for setup
Full Controller Support A controller-oriented play path is planned, but this does not identify every model or connection method.
DualShock Controllers (USB Only) DualShock support is currently identified for a wired USB connection.
DualSense Controllers (USB Only) DualSense support is currently identified for a wired USB connection.
Steam Input API Supported Steam Input may provide a translation layer for compatible controllers; the final in-game implementation is not published.
Gamepad Preferred The listing currently favors a gamepad as the intended general-purpose device.

Keyboard and wheel preset names, default keys, supported wheel models, force feedback, and the final menu wording have not been published for Ph4ntom Driver. The procedures below separate what is currently documented from the workflow you should expect if the game uses the same control system as the related JDM title, JDM: Japanese Drift Master.

Prepare the device before starting the game

  1. Connect only the device you intend to configure. For a controller, begin with a USB cable rather than Bluetooth because the current Ph4ntom Driver metadata specifically names USB DualShock and DualSense support.
  2. Wait for your operating system and Steam to recognize the device.
  3. Open Steam and confirm that the game is installed in your Library. Do not launch it until the device is connected; many games select their input profile during startup.
  4. If more than one gamepad, wheel, virtual controller, or remapping utility is active, temporarily disconnect the extras. Multiple devices can make the wrong device appear as Player 1.
  5. Keep the device firmware and driver software current, but do not install a model-specific profile claiming Ph4ntom Driver support unless Gaming Factory publishes one.

Because the game is unreleased, take a screenshot of any working bindings after an update. A preview build can reset a custom profile when its control menu changes.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Set up a gamepad

Use a wired controller first

The current title-specific evidence is strongest for USB DualShock and USB DualSense controllers. Plug the controller directly into the computer, avoid an unpowered hub during initial setup, and then start Ph4ntom Driver from Steam. If the game offers a device selector, choose the gamepad or controller option rather than keyboard.

Select the gamepad preset if it appears

The official control-presets documentation for the related JDM title groups controls into Gamepad, Wheel, and Keyboard presets and changes the preset from the steering settings. Ph4ntom Driver’s final menu is not confirmed, but look in its Controls, Input, or Steering page for a similarly named Gamepad preset. Applying a preset gives you a known starting point before you alter individual actions.

Bind the essential actions

If the preset is incomplete or the gamepad uses the wrong buttons, map the controls that affect driving first:

  • Steering
  • Throttle
  • Brake
  • Handbrake
  • Clutch, if the game exposes one for a gamepad
  • Nitro or another boost action, if present
  • Camera and pause/menu actions

Use the left stick for analog steering when the game allows it. Assign throttle and brake to analog triggers if they are offered; this gives you variable input instead of an immediate on/off command. Keep handbrake and menu actions on buttons that you can reach without removing your thumb from steering.

Check the connection mode

DualShock and DualSense are currently described as USB-only in the Steam metadata. If a wireless connection does not appear, switch to USB before changing in-game bindings. Steam Input can sometimes expose a controller that a game does not read directly, but it is a compatibility layer, not proof that every wireless feature will work.

Set up a keyboard

Choose Keyboard when available

The related JDM documentation presents a Keyboard preset alongside Gamepad and Wheel. If Ph4ntom Driver offers those same choices, select Keyboard from the steering or controls settings. The game’s default keyboard layout has not been published, so do not assume that a particular letter, arrow key, or space bar is correct.

  • Rumble vibration.

Use custom binding for a practical layout

The related official announcement confirms customizable key mapping. A sensible starting arrangement keeps the driving keys together and leaves room for corrections:

  • Place left and right steering on adjacent keys, such as the arrow keys or a paired letter-key arrangement.
  • Put throttle and brake where they can be pressed without crossing hands.
  • Assign handbrake to a separate, easy-to-reach key rather than sharing it with a menu command.
  • Give nitro, camera, pause, and navigation actions their own keys.

These are layout suggestions, not Ph4ntom Driver defaults. If the game treats keyboard steering as digital input, holding a direction will produce a fixed steering command rather than the continuously variable angle available from an analog stick or wheel. Tap or release the key to make small corrections instead of holding it through a long bend.

Resolve duplicate assignments deliberately

When assigning a key, check whether the game warns that it is already in use. Keeping one key on two actions can be useful for a menu command, but it can also trigger an unwanted action while driving. If a custom profile can be saved, give it a descriptive name such as “Keyboard-drift” so you can restore it after testing another layout.

Use Quick Setup or Custom Binding

The related JDM control-binding guide states: “You can freely set up controls in 2 ways: using Quick Setup or Custom Binding.” Ph4ntom Driver has not published a final control guide, so treat these as the expected workflow rather than guaranteed menu labels.

Quick Setup

  1. Open the game’s steering or controls settings.
  2. Choose Quick Setup if it is listed.
  3. For each basic action, press the key, button, pedal, or axis you want to use when prompted.
  4. Complete every essential driving action before leaving the screen.
  5. Save or apply the profile, then test it in a low-risk session.

Quick Setup is fastest when you want a conventional layout. It may not expose every camera, menu, or advanced driving action, so inspect the complete action list afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom Binding

  1. Open Custom Binding from the same controls area.
  2. Review the full action list instead of changing only the first few entries.
  3. Select an action and press the key or button, move the stick, or operate the pedal you want assigned.
  4. Resolve conflicts as they appear; an old assignment can otherwise remain active.
  5. Save a new Custom preset if the option is available.

Custom Binding is the better route when you use an unusual keyboard layout, a handbrake accessory, separate pedals, or a controller whose buttons do not match the expected arrangement. The related guide says it allows any key or button to be assigned; whether Ph4ntom Driver exposes the same breadth will only be clear in its released build.

Configure a steering wheel and pedals

Connect the complete wheel set before launch

Connect the wheel base, pedals, shifter, and handbrake you intend to use before starting the game. If the game samples devices only at launch, connecting a pedal afterward may leave it unavailable until you restart. Calibrate the wheel in the operating system or the manufacturer’s utility first, then close any utility that creates a second virtual controller unless you specifically need it.

Select Wheel and bind each axis

If Ph4ntom Driver presents the same preset families documented for the related JDM title, choose Wheel in the steering settings. Bind these inputs separately:

  • Steering axis
  • Throttle pedal
  • Brake pedal
  • Clutch pedal, if used
  • Handbrake axis or button

Do not bind a combined pedal axis when the game provides separate throttle and brake entries. Separate bindings make it possible to verify that pressing one pedal does not also apply the other. Assign gear and camera actions only after the five driving inputs work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is and is not known about wheel brands

The related JDM supported-devices page lists Logitech, Thrustmaster, PXN, MOZA, SIMAGIC, and FANATEC wheel and peripheral families. That list belongs to the released related title; it is not a Ph4ntom Driver compatibility list. You may try a wheel from one of those families, but Gaming Factory has not confirmed a model, driver version, steering range, pedal arrangement, or force-feedback behavior for Ph4ntom Driver.

In particular, do not buy a wheel on the assumption that force feedback will work. A wheel can be recognized as an input device while its force-feedback effects remain unavailable, incomplete, or dependent on a later update.

Verify inputs before driving

The related JDM guide describes an input diagnostic screen with percentage-scale values for steering, throttle, brake, clutch, and handbrake. If Ph4ntom Driver includes a comparable screen, open it before entering a race and move each control slowly from rest to its maximum. Confirm that the intended value changes, returns when released, and does not move when you operate a different control.

Keyboard, gamepad, or wheel: which should you use?

Device Steering behavior Setup effort Desk space Current Ph4ntom Driver evidence
Keyboard Digital directional input; fine corrections require tapping or timed releases. Usually the quickest once bindings are available. Minimal; no additional hardware. No title-specific preset or default keys published.
Gamepad Analog stick and triggers can provide variable steering, throttle, and braking. Low, especially with a preset; USB is the safest starting connection. Small. Full Controller Support, Gamepad Preferred, USB DualShock/DualSense metadata, and Steam Input API support.
Steering wheel Continuous wheel rotation and separate pedal travel when the game reads the axes correctly. Highest; requires hardware, drivers, axis binding, and physical space. Largest, often requiring a mount or dedicated desk area. No confirmed model list, force feedback, or final wheel menu.

Choose a keyboard when convenience and zero extra hardware matter most. Choose a gamepad when you want analog control with the least setup risk. Choose a wheel only when you accept that Ph4ntom Driver’s model compatibility and force-feedback support are still unresolved.

Fix a gamepad that is not detected

Start with the physical connection

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable directly to the computer.
  2. Try another USB port and, if possible, another known-good cable.
  3. Close the game, reconnect the controller, and relaunch it.
  4. Disconnect other controllers and virtual input devices while testing.

Inspect Steam’s per-game controller setting

In Steam, open Library, select Ph4ntom Driver, open its Properties, and inspect the Controller section. The exact wording can change with Steam updates. If Steam offers a per-game override, test the default setting first, then test the Steam Input option. Restart the game after changing the override so the new mode is loaded at startup.

The related JDM supported-devices guidance says that unlisted gamepads may work when Steam Input is enabled. That advice applies to the released related game, not a confirmed Ph4ntom Driver fix, but it is the most relevant troubleshooting path available before Ph4ntom Driver’s own support documentation appears.

Prevent double input

If one physical press produces two actions, you may be seeing both direct controller input and Steam Input at the same time. Test one mode at a time, remove duplicate bindings in the game, and restart after each change. Do not change several layers simultaneously; otherwise you cannot tell which setting solved or caused the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the controller works in Steam but not in the game

Confirm that the device was connected before launch, verify that the intended player slot is selected, and look for a Gamepad preset in the game’s controls page. If only keyboard prompts appear, close the game and retry with Steam Input enabled. If the game still does not respond, record the controller model, USB or wireless connection, Steam Input mode, and the game build number for a support report.

What to recheck after updates

Ph4ntom Driver’s store page warns that requirements may change before release, and its release date remains to be announced. After a preview or launch update, revisit the controls menu rather than assuming a saved profile still matches the new action list. Check the device preset, every driving axis, and any diagnostic screen again. A change in menu labels or input handling is a version difference, not necessarily a hardware failure.

The reliable starting procedure today is therefore simple: connect a USB gamepad, launch through Steam, select the available gamepad controls, and bind or test the essential actions. Keyboard and wheel workflows can follow the same preset and binding pattern if those options ship, while model-specific compatibility and force feedback should remain open questions until Gaming Factory publishes final Ph4ntom Driver documentation.
