Set up the replacement with the same Google Account and Google TV profile that hold your watchlist. Google TV syncs watchlist titles across devices on that account, while apps must be selected or reinstalled and then authenticated inside each streaming service. Google does not promise a complete clone of every installation, login, download, or app-specific setting.
Use Google Home for the most guided setup, or complete the process on the television with the Voice Remote. Keep the old Streamer associated with your account until you have checked the replacement, and do not remove it from Google Home prematurely because that unlinks the device and deletes data associated with it.

What moves to the replacement—and what does not
The migration has three separate parts: Google-account data, app installations, and service accounts. Treating them as one transfer is the main reason people think a replacement has “lost” content.

| Item | What Google’s guidance supports | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|
| Google TV watchlist | Watchlist titles update across devices signed in to the same Google Account. | Use the same account and select the profile that owns the watchlist. |
| Apps | Setup lets you select apps, and the Apps page later offers an “Apps from my other devices” row. | Select apps during onboarding, then search for and install anything still missing. |
| Streaming-service logins | Google does not promise that third-party credentials are copied to a new device. | Open each service and sign in with that service’s account when prompted. |
| Google TV service selections | Linked services can be managed separately in Google TV profile settings. | Restore or adjust the services used for recommendations after apps are available. |
| App-specific progress, downloads, and settings | The cited setup instructions do not guarantee that every app’s local state is cloned. | Use each service’s own account or recovery process where available. |
Google’s official setup instructions are the reference for the device procedure: Set up Google TV Streamer (4K) and Voice Remote. App installation details are covered in Install apps on Google TV, and watchlist behavior in Save movies & shows to watch later.

Prepare before connecting the replacement
Gather the hardware and account details
- Google TV Streamer, Voice Remote and the remote’s required batteries.
- A television or display with an available HDMI input.
- Power for the Streamer and a secure Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection.
- The Google Account used by the existing Google TV profile and watchlist.
- A phone with the Google Home app if you plan to use phone-guided setup.
Google lists an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable as sold separately in the setup requirements. Check whether you already have a suitable cable before connecting; it is a conditional accessory, not an automatic extra purchase for every installation. Google also recommends a Gmail account for the best setup experience. Device, network, feature and service availability can vary by location and device.
Factory-reset a previously used replacement
If the replacement Streamer has been set up before, factory-reset it before starting your migration. A clean setup prevents an old owner’s home, account, room assignment or partial app configuration from being mixed with yours. Follow the reset instructions shown by the device or its on-screen settings, then wait for the initial setup screen before proceeding.
Leave the old Streamer available while you verify the new one
You can keep the old unit connected while checking the replacement. Avoid using Google Home’s device-removal action until you have confirmed the new device, because Google says removing a streaming device unlinks it from your Google Account and other home members’ accounts and deletes data associated with that device. The exact impact depends on the action you take; migration is safer when you leave the old association intact until the final check. See Remove Google streaming devices from your Google Account for Google’s explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a setup route
Both official routes can produce a working replacement. The difference is where you perform the steps and how you choose apps.
| Route | Best when | What you do | App handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Home app | You want phone-guided instructions, QR-code pairing and app selection from a mobile device. | Add or select a home, choose the Streamer, scan its QR code or enter the setup code, accept terms, choose a room and finish sign-in. | Select apps on the mobile device, then wait for the television to install them. |
| TV and Voice Remote | You prefer to complete setup directly on the television or cannot use phone-guided onboarding. | Connect the Streamer, switch the display to its HDMI input and follow the on-screen instructions with the remote. | Install or locate apps from the TV’s Apps area after setup. |
Neither route is documented as an automatic, byte-for-byte restoration of every old app and account. Choose based on convenience, then perform the same account, app and watchlist checks.
Set up with the Google Home app
- Connect the Streamer to an HDMI input on the display and connect its power. Turn on the display and select that HDMI input.
- Open Google Home on your phone. Choose an existing home or add the home in which the Streamer will live.
- Locate and select the Google TV Streamer when Google Home finds it.
- Scan the QR code shown on the television, or enter the setup code if scanning is unavailable.
- Accept the terms shown in the app, then assign the device to its room.
- Continue with the Google Account sign-in. Use the account that owns the watchlist, not merely an account that happens to be available on the phone.
- Complete the remaining in-app and on-screen prompts, including network connection and any available app-selection screen.
- If you selected apps on the phone, wait for the television to finish installing them. Google’s setup guide explicitly says: “Wait for the TV to install the apps you selected on your mobile device.”
If Google Home cannot find the Streamer, verify power, HDMI input, phone connectivity and the Wi-Fi network before restarting onboarding. A device that was previously configured should be factory-reset so the pairing flow starts from its initial screen.

Set up on the television with the Voice Remote
- Connect the Streamer to HDMI and power, then switch the television to the matching HDMI input.
- Pair or activate the Voice Remote when the on-screen instructions request it.
- Follow the setup prompts on the television, including network selection and Google Account sign-in.
- When asked for an account, enter the same Google Account associated with the existing watchlist.
- Complete the profile and other device prompts, then open the Apps area to check which applications are present.
This route does not change the account rules: the watchlist depends on the account and profile, while app availability and third-party authentication are handled separately.

Use the apps selected during onboarding
When the Google Home route offers app selection, choose the services you use and allow the television to finish installing them. Installation may take time depending on the number of apps and the network connection. Do not treat the end of onboarding as proof that every app from the old Streamer was copied; Google describes selection and installation, not an unconditional clone of all previous software.
Check “Apps from my other devices”
After setup, open the Apps area and look for the row labeled “Apps from my other devices.” It is a discovery aid for applications associated with your account. Select an app to install it, or use the Apps search function if it does not appear in that row. The installation workflow is documented by Google in Install apps on Google TV.
Search and install an app manually
- Open the Apps page on the replacement.
- Use search to enter the app’s name.
- Select the correct result and choose Install.
- Wait for installation to complete, then open the app once to confirm it launches.
- Repeat for services that were not offered during onboarding or did not appear under the other-devices row.
Google says apps work across TV profiles except kids’ profiles. If an app is available on an adult profile but absent from a kids’ profile, that profile distinction can explain the difference.
Sign in inside each streaming app
Installing an app does not establish that service’s account session. Open every service, choose its sign-in option and authenticate with the credentials or device-linking method required by that provider. Google’s setup material does not promise that third-party passwords, device tokens, viewing progress or downloads are transferred to the replacement, so plan for service-by-service authentication.
Restore Google TV service settings and recommendations
App access and Google TV’s service configuration are separate. After the apps you use are installed, open the profile’s settings and review the services selected for Google TV. Re-enable or link the services you want included in recommendations, then allow the interface to refresh.

- Works with the apps you already know and love; enjoy shows, movies, music, games, sports, photos, live TV, and more from over 2,000 streaming apps in up to 1080p
- With Chromecast, you can stream, pause, play, or adjust the volume right from your phone with just a tap; while you’re streaming, you can still use your phone as you normally do
- Mirror your laptop screen or turn your tablet into an even better entertainment system; surf the web or see your media on the big screen
Removing a service from Google TV does not cancel a paid subscription. Cancellation must be completed with the service provider. This distinction matters if you are cleaning up an old device: changing the services shown by Google TV changes recommendations and access paths, not the billing relationship.
Google explains service viewing and management in Watch movies & shows from streaming services. Recommendation accuracy can depend on the linked accounts and the services available in your region.
Bring back the watchlist
Use the same account and profile
- Open the account and profile controls on the replacement.
- Confirm that the signed-in Google Account is the one used on the old Streamer.
- If several Google TV profiles are shown, select the profile that originally saved the titles.
- Open Watchlist from the profile menu or the Google TV app and allow the list to load.
Google says watchlist items update across devices logged into the same account. A list that appears empty therefore usually points first to an account or profile mismatch rather than missing app installations. The watchlist is still separate from a streaming service’s own account history.
Understand why an expected title may be absent
Some content from some services cannot be added to the Google TV watchlist. If one title is missing while other saved items appear, the limitation may apply to that content rather than to the replacement device. Check the title from the Google TV app or interface after verifying the account and profile.

Multiple Google Accounts on one household
Households often use one account for the device and another for a personal watchlist. During setup, deliberately choose the account that owns the list, then select the correct Google TV profile. Do not assume that having the account signed in somewhere on the phone means Google Home will choose it automatically.
Google Workspace accounts
Google recommends Gmail for the best Streamer setup experience. It cautions that some services, app installation, YouTube and parental controls may be unavailable or behave unexpectedly when a non-administrator Google Workspace account is used. If onboarding or app access behaves oddly with a work or school account, use an eligible personal Google Account where appropriate, subject to your organization’s policies.

Profile-linked activity
Google describes media and activity syncing for profiles signed in to Google services, while its platform documentation notes that prior interactions can depend on linked accounts. This is why a replacement can recover the Google TV watchlist without restoring every service’s local history. Keep the Google profile and each provider’s account aligned when you want recommendations and progress to match.

A safe migration order
- Leave the old Streamer available and collect the account, network and hardware requirements.
- Factory-reset the replacement if it has been used before.
- Connect it to HDMI and power, then complete Google Home or TV/remote onboarding.
- Sign in with the Google Account and profile that own the watchlist.
- Install the selected apps, check “Apps from my other devices,” and search manually for anything missing.
- Open each streaming app and complete its own sign-in.
- Review Google TV service settings and linked services.
- Open Watchlist and verify several known titles, not just the presence of the Watchlist menu.
- Only after these checks, decide whether to disconnect or remove the old device.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The watchlist is empty
- Open account controls and compare the email address with the account used on the old Streamer.
- Switch to the correct Google TV profile if the household has more than one.
- Refresh the Google TV app or interface after the account change.
- Check whether the missing title is content that the service does not allow Google TV to add to a watchlist.
An old app is not listed
- Open Apps and check “Apps from my other devices.”
- Search for the app by name and install it manually.
- Confirm that you are not viewing a kids’ profile, because Google’s cross-profile app behavior excludes kids’ profiles.
- Check regional, device and service availability if the app cannot be found at all.
The app opens but asks for a login
This is expected when the provider’s session was not transferred. Use the service’s sign-in or activation flow. A Google Account sign-in to the Streamer does not substitute for authentication with an unrelated streaming provider.
Recommendations look different
Review the services linked in the Google TV profile settings and confirm that the intended provider accounts are connected. Recommendations can also vary with region, subscription status and linked-account activity even when the Google TV watchlist is correct.
The old device disappeared after removal
Google warns that removing a streaming device through Google Home unlinks it from the Google Account and other home members’ accounts and deletes data associated with that device. If you used that action before completing migration, finish the replacement setup with the correct account and profile, then reinstall and re-authenticate apps as needed. The exact data that can be recovered depends on each service’s own account system.
Setup or installation will not finish
- Confirm the Streamer has stable power and that the display is on the correct HDMI input.
- Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity and retry the relevant setup step.
- Use a suitable HDMI cable; Google lists an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable as sold separately.
- Consider regional availability, subscriptions, device limitations and service terms when a feature or app is unavailable.
What a successful replacement looks like
The replacement is ready when the intended Google Account and profile are active, known watchlist titles are visible, required apps are installed, each provider accepts its sign-in, and Google TV’s service selections match the services you want recommended. That verification is more reliable than assuming the onboarding screen copied every aspect of the old Streamer. Once those checks pass, you can retire the old unit with far less risk of confusing a Google-account sync issue with an app-account or installation issue.
