Check that your phone and Pixel Watch are compatible
Pixel Watch setup requires the Google Pixel Watch app on an Android phone. Google states that “iPhones aren’t supported,” so an iPhone cannot be used as the companion phone for Pixel Watch.
The Android minimum depends on the watch generation. These are compatibility thresholds, not recommendations for a particular Android version:
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
| Watch generation | Minimum Android version |
|---|---|
| Pixel Watch | Android 8.0 or newer |
| Pixel Watch 2 | Android 9.0 or newer |
| Pixel Watch 3 | Android 10.0 or newer |
| Pixel Watch 4 | Android 11.0 or newer |
| Pixel Watch 5 | Android 12.0 or newer |
Check the exact model against Google’s current compatibility and region-availability page before starting. Regional availability, supported features, and requirements can change.
Important compatibility limits
- The phone must run a supported Android release for the specific watch generation.
- Pixel Watch is not compatible with Android Go edition, according to Google’s technical specifications.
- The watch must be sold and used in a region where Google makes that model available. Region availability is separate from the Android-version requirement.
- A Google Account is required during setup. If you use a Google Workspace account, Google says Device Management must be turned off for watch use.
Google’s technical and device specifications contain the Android Go limitation and additional model details.
Use the requirement for your exact generation
There is no single Android minimum that applies to every Pixel Watch. For example, a phone that meets the Android 8.0 threshold for the first Pixel Watch may still be too old for a Pixel Watch 3, 4, or 5. Check the model name and generation before troubleshooting an installation that refuses to start. The same check is useful when buying a used watch: confirm both the generation and the region in which it was sold, then compare those details with Google’s current compatibility page.
What to have ready before setup
Gather the items and information below before opening the pairing screen. Doing this first prevents setup from stopping while the watch is waiting for a connection or an account decision.
- The Pixel Watch and its included charging cable.
- A compatible Android phone with enough charge to remain on during setup.
- A Google Account and the password or verification method needed to sign in.
- Internet access through Wi-Fi or mobile data. Google’s setup flow needs an internet connection.
- The latest version of the Google Pixel Watch app installed on the phone.
- The band you want to use, attached to the watch.
Charge the phone and watch before you begin. The first connection and any firmware update can take several minutes, and interrupting power during an update can leave setup unfinished.
Do you need to buy an accessory?
The setup checklist calls for the charging cable included with the watch and a band attached to it; those are not additional purchases for a normal first setup. If a cable is lost or damaged, replace it with one compatible with your model. An extra band is optional, such as when you want a different fit or material, but verify model compatibility before ordering. No accessory is needed to make the initial Bluetooth pairing work.
Prepare the phone
- Install or update the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Install any available Android system updates that your phone supports.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi or a reliable mobile-data connection.
- When the app or Android asks for location access, allow it. Google specifically instructs users to allow location permissions during preparation; denying the permission can prevent discovery or setup.
- Sign in to the Google Account you intend to use with the watch, or have its credentials ready.
Turn on and prepare the watch
- Attach the selected band.
- Connect the watch to its charging cable if it needs power.
- Press and hold the crown for about three seconds. Release it when the screen lights up.
- Leave the watch close to the phone. Keep both devices together throughout pairing and updates.
Google’s complete preparation checklist is in Set up Google Pixel Watch.

How to set up a Google Pixel Watch and pair it with your phone
Use the following sequence for a new watch. The app may present a Fast Pair notification, but you can also begin directly in the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Open the app. With Bluetooth on and the watch powered up nearby, open the Google Pixel Watch app. If a Fast Pair prompt appears, select it. If no prompt appears, start the add-watch flow inside the app.
- Select the watch. Choose your Pixel Watch when it appears in the list. Follow each on-screen instruction rather than pairing from Android’s generic Bluetooth settings.
- Compare the pairing codes. A code appears on the watch and in the phone app. Read both screens carefully and confirm they are identical.
- Tap Pair only after they match. Approve the pairing in the app. Google says this stage can take a few minutes.
- Keep the devices close. Do not turn off Bluetooth, leave the app’s setup flow, or move the watch out of range while the connection is being established.
The code check protects you from approving a connection to the wrong nearby device. If the numbers differ, do not continue; use the restart procedure in the troubleshooting section below.
What if Fast Pair does not appear?
Fast Pair is a convenience, not a requirement. Make sure the watch is on, Bluetooth is enabled, and the phone is nearby, then open the Google Pixel Watch app yourself and use its add-watch flow. The watch should be selected from inside that app rather than from the phone’s ordinary Bluetooth device list, because the app controls the account and watch-specific setup that follows.
Finish the initial setup in the app
Pairing establishes the connection, but several account and preference screens remain. Complete them in the order shown by the app.
Sign in and accept the required terms
Sign in to your Google Account when prompted. Complete any verification steps and accept the terms required by the setup flow. If the account is managed through Google Workspace, the organization’s Device Management setting must permit watch use; Google says Device Management must be turned off for Workspace accounts that are used with the watch.
Choose the warranty country
The app asks you to select the country where the device was purchased. This selection is used for limited-warranty information, so choose the purchase country rather than your current travel destination.
Decide whether to restore a backup
If a backup is offered, choose to restore it when you want compatible settings and data brought back to the watch. Choose not to restore when you want a clean setup. The choice is optional; declining a restore does not prevent the watch from pairing.

Set wrist and crown orientation
Tell the app which wrist you will wear the watch on and which way the crown is oriented. These settings control the display and control layout. You can change the physical orientation later, but selecting it accurately now avoids an awkward control layout during the first use.

After the basic connection, the app may offer further setup. Google lists the following as optional choices rather than requirements for pairing:
- Google Health: an optional health-related setup path in the app.
- LTE cellular plan: a separate cellular-service setup for an LTE-capable watch and supported carrier.
- Safety features: optional safety tools you can configure when you are ready.
- Gemini: an optional assistant feature presented by the setup flow.
- Screen lock: an optional security setting.
- Google Wallet: optional wallet setup.
- Google Play apps: optional app installation.
Select Set up more to configure any of these now, or start using the watch and return to them later. Skipping one does not mean pairing failed. Continue through the prompts until the app reports Connected; that status confirms that the phone and watch have completed the connection.
Why won’t my Pixel Watch pair? Fix the code and connection problems
The pairing codes do not match
Never approve a mismatched code. Restart the watch and begin the pairing attempt again:
- Press and hold the crown for about three seconds.
- Scroll to Restart.
- Tap Restart and wait for the watch to start fully.
- Bring the watch close to the phone again.
- Open or return to the Google Pixel Watch app and repeat the pairing flow.
- Compare the two codes and tap Pair only when they match.
If the codes continue to differ after a restart, use Google’s current setup and phone-pairing troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly accepting a mismatch.

The watch does not appear in the app
- Confirm that Bluetooth is on and that the phone has an active Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- Confirm that the Pixel Watch app is up to date.
- Check that location permission is allowed for the app, as requested in Google’s preparation instructions.
- Move the watch next to the phone and make sure the watch has finished starting.
- Restart the watch, then reopen the app and try the add-watch flow again.
Setup stops during an update or account screen
- Keep both devices charged and close together.
- Do not disable Bluetooth or disconnect the phone from the internet while the app is working.
- Verify that the Android release meets the minimum for your watch generation and is not Android Go edition.
- Check that the Google Account can sign in normally and that a Workspace administrator has not left Device Management enabled.
These checks address the prerequisites Google lists for setup. If they do not resolve the failure, follow the linked Google troubleshooting instructions for the exact message shown on your phone or watch.
Moving a Pixel Watch to a new phone
Pairing to a new phone is different from setting up a brand-new watch. For watches running Wear OS 4, Google documents a transfer process designed to preserve the existing watch connection until the transfer succeeds.
Rank #4
- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
- On the watch and the old phone, start Transfer watch.
- On the new Android phone, open the Google Pixel Watch app and add the watch.
- When the codes appear, confirm that the code on the watch matches the code shown on the new phone.
- Complete the transfer prompts and wait for the new connection to finish.
Google says the watch unpairs from the old phone only after the transfer succeeds. Do not manually remove the watch from the old phone first if you want to use this documented transfer path. The detailed instructions are in Google’s upgrade and transfer guide.
The documented transfer route is specifically for Wear OS 4. If your watch is on another software version, check Google’s current instructions for that version instead of assuming the same menu names or behavior. In every case, keep the old phone available until the new connection is confirmed.

A Bluetooth and app pairing does not by itself provide cellular service. LTE features require a compatible carrier plan, and the carrier may charge an additional fee.
Google’s specifications state that full talk, text, and data functionality requires the Pixel Watch and its companion Android device to use the same carrier network. Carrier compatibility and availability vary by country and plan, so check directly with your carrier before adding service. A watch can complete Bluetooth setup even when LTE service is unavailable or has not been activated.
What pairing gives you
- A connection between the watch and the Pixel Watch app.
- Access to the account, backup, orientation, and optional-feature setup screens.
- Bluetooth-based communication with the companion phone when the devices are within range.
What requires separate carrier action
- An eligible LTE watch model and a carrier-supported plan.
- Carrier activation and any recurring or one-time carrier fees.
- Confirmation that the watch and companion phone can use the same carrier network for full talk, text, and data functionality.
After the app says Connected
Once the app displays Connected, check the practical details that affect daily use:
- Wear the band securely but comfortably and verify that the selected wrist and crown orientation feel correct.
- Open the app again later if you skipped Google Health, safety features, Wallet, screen lock, Gemini, Play apps, or LTE setup.
- Keep the Pixel Watch app installed and allow the permissions needed for the features you choose.
- If you plan to use cellular service, complete carrier activation separately and verify the carrier’s current compatibility rules.
- For a watch moved from another phone, confirm that the new phone is the one shown as connected before erasing or retiring the old phone.
A quick readiness check
You are finished with basic setup when the app says Connected, the watch responds to the controls, and the account screens have completed. If you skipped optional features, that is normal; return to the app whenever you want to configure them. If you intend to use LTE, treat carrier enrollment as a separate task and confirm its fees, availability, and same-network requirement before relying on cellular talk, text, or data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set up a Pixel Watch with an iPhone?
No. Google states that iPhones are not supported. Use the Google Pixel Watch app on a compatible Android phone instead.
Which Android version do I need?
The minimum depends on the generation: Android 8.0 for Pixel Watch, 9.0 for Pixel Watch 2, 10.0 for Pixel Watch 3, 11.0 for Pixel Watch 4, and 12.0 for Pixel Watch 5. Pixel Watch is not compatible with Android Go edition.
Why do the pairing codes differ?
Do not tap Pair when the codes differ. Hold the crown for about three seconds, choose Restart, wait for the watch to start fully, then bring it near the phone and repeat setup. If the mismatch continues, follow Google’s pairing troubleshooting guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need Wi-Fi to pair the watch?
The setup flow needs internet access through Wi-Fi or mobile data, as well as Bluetooth for the nearby connection. Keep the phone online while the app completes setup and any updates.
Does pairing activate LTE?
No. LTE requires a compatible watch, carrier plan, activation, and possibly additional fees. Google says full talk, text, and data functionality requires the watch and companion Android phone to use the same carrier network.
How do I move my watch to another phone?
For a watch running Wear OS 4, start Transfer watch on the watch and old phone, add it from the Pixel Watch app on the new phone, and confirm the matching code. Google says the old-phone connection remains until the transfer succeeds.
The Bottom Line
Use the Google Pixel Watch app—not generic Bluetooth settings—on a supported Android phone. Check your generation’s Android minimum and region, enable Bluetooth, location, and internet access, then approve pairing only when both screens show the same code. Account, backup, orientation, and optional features follow pairing; LTE requires separate carrier service and fees.
