The fastest, least error-prone way to set up a Pixel 10 is to prepare the old phone first, connect both devices to power and reliable Wi‑Fi, then follow the Pixel’s transfer prompt. You can copy data directly from an available Android phone or iPhone, or restore a Google Account backup when the old phone is unavailable. If you skipped migration during setup, Google’s Pixel 9-and-later instructions let you add data later through Android Switch, so a factory reset is usually unnecessary.
Transfer is category-based rather than a guaranteed clone. Contacts, calendars, messages, photos, settings, files, Wi‑Fi details, call history and supported apps can move, while some manufacturer-specific app data, paid iPhone apps and certain layouts may not. Use the steps below to choose the right route and verify what arrived.

Before you turn on the Pixel 10
A few minutes of preparation prevents most failed or incomplete transfers. Do this while you still have access to the old phone.
- Back up the old phone. Confirm that the Google Account you intend to use is the one holding your Android backup, contacts, photos or other synced data.
- Charge both phones. Keep them connected to power during a large transfer or cloud restore.
- Use dependable Wi‑Fi. A weak connection can interrupt pairing, app downloads and cloud synchronization.
- Keep the phones close together. The nearby-device and QR pairing flow depends on a short-range connection.
- Know the old phone’s screen lock. Android may require its PIN, pattern or password before it will authorize copying.
- Prepare a cable only if useful. A USB-C data cable is optional. It is helpful when Wi‑Fi is unreliable or when you prefer a wired transfer. Match the connector on the old phone and verify that the cable carries data, not only power.
- Back up third-party apps separately. For example, Google advises using WhatsApp’s own in-app chat backup and migration controls rather than assuming a phone transfer will preserve every conversation.
Do not erase or trade in the old phone until you have opened the important apps on the Pixel 10 and confirmed that their information is present.

Start the Pixel 10 setup
- Power on the Pixel 10. Follow the welcome screens and choose your language, region and other basic preferences.
- Connect to a network. Join Wi‑Fi when prompted. The connection is needed for account sign-in, backup discovery and application downloads.
- Complete mobile-service setup. Follow the SIM or eSIM instructions shown for your carrier. In the United States, Google’s preparatory guidance says Pixel 10 and later phones do not have a physical SIM slot; that configuration is geography-specific and should not be generalized to every country.
- Sign in to the right Google Account. Use the account associated with the old Android phone or with the backup you want to restore. A different account can make the expected backup appear to be missing.
- Choose whether to copy data. The setup wizard presents nearby-device transfer and backup-restore choices. Select the route that matches your source phone and whether it is available.
- Review Pixel features and personalization. Finish the remaining prompts, including screen-lock, fingerprint or face-unlock options when offered. These choices protect the data that will arrive on the device.
Pixel setup can continue while applications install. The phone may show a partially populated home screen for a while; that does not necessarily mean the transfer failed.
Choose the transfer method that fits your situation
| Situation | Best route | Connection | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Android phone is available | Nearby Android transfer using the Pixel prompt and QR pairing | Wireless or USB-C cable | Some manufacturer-specific app data may not copy |
| Old iPhone is available | iPhone-specific transfer flow shown during Pixel setup | Follow the on-screen connection instructions; a cable may be useful | Paid apps purchased through Apple’s App Store do not transfer as Android purchases |
| Old phone is unavailable, but a usable Google backup exists | Cloud restore during setup | Wi‑Fi | Only information included in the backup or a service’s own sync can be restored |
| Setup already finished | Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch > Start | Wireless or the offered wired route | Google allows one previous source device for this later transfer; another source requires resetting the Pixel |
Choose based on five questions: Is the old phone available? Is it Android or iPhone? Do you want wired or wireless copying? Is there a Google Account backup? Are you transferring during first-run setup or afterward? The answers determine which prompts you see.
Transfer from an Android phone
Pair the phones wirelessly
- On the Pixel 10’s setup screen, select the option to copy apps and data from an Android device.
- Unlock the old phone and follow its pairing prompt. The Pixel may display a QR code; scan it with the old phone when instructed.
- Approve the connection and sign in or confirm the requested screen lock on the old device.
- Review the categories presented by the wizard. Select the items you actually need rather than assuming every item is selected or transferable.
- Start the copy and leave both phones nearby, unlocked when requested, connected to power and on strong Wi‑Fi.
Google documents wireless transfer for Pixel 8 and later, which includes Pixel 10. Wireless copying avoids finding a suitable cable, but a crowded or weak Wi‑Fi environment can make it slower or cause a pause.

Use a USB-C cable when wireless transfer is unreliable
- Connect the old phone and Pixel 10 with a USB-C data cable, using an adapter only if the old phone has a different connector.
- On the old phone, approve any prompt asking whether the connected device may access or copy data.
- On the Pixel, choose the wired transfer option if it is offered, then review the same category selection.
- Keep the cable firmly connected until the Pixel reports that copying is complete. Disconnecting early can leave only part of the selected data on the new phone.
The cable is an alternative, not a requirement. If the old phone’s connector or cable does not support data, switch to the wireless flow instead of repeatedly retrying a charge-only connection.
Transfer from an iPhone
- On the Pixel 10 setup wizard, select the iPhone or iPad source option rather than the Android option.
- Follow the iPhone-specific connection instructions shown on both screens. Keep the iPhone unlocked and approve access requests as they appear.
- Review the categories offered for copying, then start the transfer.
- Leave both devices powered and connected until the Pixel finishes importing the selected information.
Google says Pixel 10 and later can transfer most iPhone data, including passwords and passkeys, Wi‑Fi networks, text messages, photos, contacts, apps and calendars. “Most” is important: an iOS app is not automatically converted into an Android app with identical internal data, and paid apps bought through Apple’s App Store do not transfer as purchases. Reinstall Android versions from Google Play and use each service’s own sign-in or migration process when its data is not included.
Restore from a Google Account backup without the old phone
Use cloud restore when the previous phone is lost, damaged, unavailable or already wiped, provided a usable backup exists.

- During Pixel setup, choose the option to set up without using another device when that is the available path.
- Connect the Pixel 10 to Wi‑Fi.
- Sign in with the same Google Account that created the backup.
- Set a screen-lock PIN and configure the offered biometric security.
- When the Pixel lists available backups, select the intended previous device. Check the device name or date carefully if more than one appears.
- Choose the categories to restore and tap Restore.
The cloud route cannot recreate information that was never backed up or synchronized. If a particular app keeps its own account, encrypted vault or chat archive, use that app’s recovery instructions after Android setup rather than expecting the general device backup to contain it.
What the Pixel can copy—and what may remain behind
Google describes transfer at the category level. Selecting a category does not promise that every application’s private database, account session or visual arrangement will be reproduced exactly.
| Category | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Google Account data | Account information and supported synchronized data can reappear after you sign in. |
| Contacts and calendars | Contacts and calendar events supported by the selected transfer or backup can be restored. |
| Messages | Text messages and attachments are listed among common transferable categories. |
| Photos and videos | Items copied directly or synchronized from the cloud may continue arriving after setup; keep Wi‑Fi and power connected. |
| Apps | Android apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play are listed for Android-to-Pixel transfer. They may download in stages rather than appear instantly. |
| Device settings | Supported settings, Wi‑Fi details and call history can transfer, but hardware-specific or manufacturer-only options may not have an equivalent on Pixel. |
| Files and folders | Supported files and folders can be copied; check local storage locations manually for anything important. |
| WhatsApp chats | Google’s transfer information includes WhatsApp chat history, but use WhatsApp’s own backup and migration steps as well. |
| Home-screen layout and recordings | Support varies by source platform and category. Do not assume the old arrangement or every recording will be reproduced. |
| Manufacturer-specific app data | Google warns that data tied to another manufacturer’s apps may not transfer. |
A practical expectation is: your Google apps and supported Android data can come across, but some manufacturer-specific app data may not. Open each high-value app, sign in, and verify its content before retiring the old phone.

Let downloads and synchronization finish
After the copy wizard completes, the Pixel 10 may still be installing applications and retrieving cloud content. Keep it on strong Wi‑Fi and connected to power while photos, videos and other synchronized data arrive. Some apps take longer to download or install than others, so an initially empty app icon or missing recent photo is not proof that the transfer was rejected.
- Open the Play Store and check for downloads still in progress.
- Open Photos or the relevant cloud service and allow its library to synchronize.
- Check Messages, Contacts and Calendar for the expected date range.
- Confirm that Wi‑Fi networks and other settings you rely on are present.
- Launch important third-party apps and complete any separate sign-in, encryption or migration prompt.
If you already finished setup
Pixel 9 and later models support adding transferred data after initial setup, which includes Pixel 10. You generally do not need to erase the phone just because you skipped the migration screen.

This later transfer adds to what is already on the Pixel rather than requiring a blank phone. Google allows one previous device as the source for this post-setup process. If you need to switch to a different previous device, Google’s documented route requires resetting the Pixel and starting again; back up anything currently on the Pixel before considering that reset.

Troubleshoot a stalled or incomplete transfer
The phones cannot pair
- Make sure both phones are powered on, unlocked and running updated software.
- Move them close together and reconnect to strong Wi‑Fi.
- Restart both phones, then repeat the QR or connection prompt.
- Try a known data-capable cable if wireless pairing remains unreliable.
The transfer stops partway through
- Reconnect both phones to power and check that neither has gone to sleep or locked at a confirmation screen.
- Use a cable if the wireless connection is unstable.
- Check available Pixel storage. A full destination can pause copying; free space and retry the transfer.
- For a transfer that was skipped during setup, use Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch > Start to add the missing categories.
Apps or data are missing
- Confirm that you selected the relevant category during transfer.
- Wait for Play Store downloads and cloud synchronization to finish while the Pixel remains on Wi‑Fi and power.
- Sign in with the Google Account that owns the backup or Play Store purchases.
- Check whether the missing information belongs to a manufacturer-specific app or requires that app’s own backup.
- For WhatsApp and similar services, use the service’s in-app restore process.
The cloud backup does not appear
- Verify the spelling and account address of the Google Account on the Pixel.
- Confirm that you selected the intended old device when the backup list appeared.
- Ensure the old phone actually completed a backup. A cloud restore cannot recover data that was never uploaded.
- If no usable backup exists, investigate the individual app’s synchronization or recovery options instead of repeatedly resetting the Pixel.
The Pixel runs out of storage
Open the storage settings, remove unnecessary downloads or duplicate media, and retry only the categories you need. Do not delete the old phone’s originals until you have verified the Pixel copy or a separate cloud copy.
A final verification checklist
Before wiping, selling or returning the old phone, check the items that would be hardest to replace:
- Google Account sign-in and two-step verification access
- Contacts, calendars and recent text messages
- Photos, videos and locally stored files
- Passwords and passkeys imported from an iPhone, where supported
- WhatsApp or other critical chat history
- Banking, work and authentication apps, including their recovery prompts
- Wi‑Fi networks, Bluetooth accessories and essential device settings
- Call history and any recordings you specifically need
Once those checks pass and all expected downloads have finished, the Pixel 10 is ready for normal use. Keep the old phone untouched until you are satisfied that every app with irreplaceable information has either transferred or been recovered through its own service.
