1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet up a gaming desk by fitting the chair and foot support first, then placing the keyboard and mouse within easy reach, positioning the monitor for relaxed viewing, and checking that the whole arrangement works together. These are practical starting points—not a single posture or product guaranteed to suit everyone.
1. Adjust the chair and support your feet
Sit back so the chair supports your back. Set the seat height for comfort, with your feet supported; Mayo Clinic Health System recommends feet flat on the floor and knees roughly level with the hips. If the chair does not provide enough lower-back support, adjust the support if available. Mayo Clinic Health System’s home-workspace guidance offers these as general setup recommendations.

You may need to raise the chair to bring your arms level with a fixed desk, but check the consequences: your feet should remain supported and your thighs should have adequate clearance. If raising the seat leaves your feet dangling, consider a footrest. Do not trade away leg comfort just to match the desk height. OSHA’s monitor guidance discusses chair height, foot support, and the possible need for a footrest as part of workstation fit.

Place the keyboard directly in front of you. Let your shoulders relax, keep your elbows near your sides, and aim for wrists that stay straight and aligned with your forearms. Your hands should reach the keyboard and mouse without stretching or leaning. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety describes elbows at approximately 90 to 110 degrees and forearms horizontal as a useful guideline; comfort and neutral alignment matter more than forcing an exact angle. OSHA’s keyboard guidance and CCOHS’s keyboard fact sheet cover these positioning principles.
#1 Best Overall
- MORE SPACE. SET THE PACE: The 60" x 27.56" desktop gives dual monitors, speakers, a keyboard, and PC gear room to spread out. Its curved front edge keeps controls within easy reach for gaming, streaming, creative projects, or home office work.
- SOLID BASE. STEADY SPACE: The reinforced steel frame supports up to 500 pounds, helping the PC desk stay steady through quick mouse movements, typing, and daily use. Adjustable feet help level the desk on uneven floors.
- WIDE PAD. SMOOTH GLIDE: The fitted full-surface mouse pad gives your keyboard and mouse one clean, continuous surface. Smooth fabric supports controlled tracking, while stitched edges and a rubber base help reduce fraying and shifting.
- CABLES LOW. CLEANER FLOW: Built-in cable management keeps cords and a power strip below the desktop. A controller rack, cup holder, and dual headset hook keep frequently used accessories off the gaming table and within reach.
- SET UP. BACKED UP: Clear instructions and included tools help simplify assembly. The desk includes a one-year warranty, and customer support can assist with setup questions, missing parts, or product concerns.
Avoid pressing your wrists against the desk edge while typing. A wrist rest is optional, not a universal requirement; it should not force your wrists into an awkward position. If a fixed desk makes it difficult to position the keyboard comfortably, an adjustable keyboard tray may help. Make sure it can hold both keyboard and mouse with enough room for your legs. A narrow tray can push the mouse outward and create more reaching. OSHA’s purchasing guide also advises considering clearance and fit when choosing workstation components.
3. Position the monitor for relaxed viewing
Put the monitor directly in front of you, at a distance where text is readable without leaning your head or torso forward. OSHA’s quick-tip starting point is at least 20 inches away, with the top line of the screen at or below eye level. Treat both as starting guidance: screen size, vision, and comfortable posture affect the distance and height that work for you. OSHA also describes the screen’s center as normally 15–20 degrees below horizontal eye level; that is a viewing-angle guideline, not a precise target everyone must reproduce. OSHA’s monitor recommendations explain these placements.

Reduce glare by considering where windows and lights fall on the screen. OSHA suggests positioning a monitor perpendicular to a window. Mayo Clinic’s gaming and esports guidance likewise advises keeping the screen at eye level or slightly below and reducing glare. Mayo Clinic’s esports guidance also mentions blue-light exposure before bedtime; that is separate from desk posture, and this guidance does not establish screen filters or other products as a treatment.

4. Check whether the desk fits the whole setup
The desk needs enough depth to place the monitor at a comfortable viewing distance and enough surface area for the display, keyboard, and pointing device. Keep frequently used equipment in front of you and preserve legroom. A desk’s height cannot be judged in isolation: changing chair height or display placement may require repositioning other equipment. OSHA’s purchasing guide says height adjustability is desirable when paired with an adjustable chair, both to accommodate different users and to allow posture changes.

If you use a sit/stand desk, set the work surface around standing elbow height, with keyboard and mouse aligned as they are when seated. Keep the monitor sightline comfortable in both positions. Standing does not remove the need for breaks away from the computer. CCOHS’s sit/stand desk guidance addresses setup and breaks.
5. Adjust first; add accessories only when needed
Before buying equipment, identify what your current arrangement cannot accommodate. An adjustable monitor arm may help if the supplied stand or desk layout prevents a comfortable screen height or distance. Check that the arm’s clamp suits your desk, its mounting system suits your monitor, and its adjustment range and reach work in your space. If your desk and stand already let you position the display comfortably, an arm is not necessary.

Other options solve specific fit problems:
- Adjustable keyboard tray: Consider one when the fixed desktop prevents a comfortable keyboard position. Confirm that the tray has room for the mouse and does not restrict leg clearance.
- Footrest: Consider one if adjusting chair height leaves your feet unsupported.
- Height-adjustable or sit/stand desk: Consider one if a fixed surface cannot be fitted comfortably or you want to vary your working position. Standing is not inherently a healthier substitute for sitting.
- Adjustable chair: Consider one if the current chair cannot provide comfortable seat height, back support, and foot support. The “gaming chair” label alone does not establish ergonomic benefit.
These are conditional options, not a shopping checklist: choose only equipment that addresses a specific limitation in your setup. OSHA’s guidance on workstation components and its purchasing guide emphasize fitting the workstation to the user.
6. Take recovery breaks and respond to discomfort
Gaming can involve repeated keyboard, mouse, or controller use. Mayo Clinic physiatrist Jane Konidis, M.D., describes a mechanism behind overuse injuries: “The overuse injuries among esports athletes that we see are typically related to situations where demand exceeds the ability of tissues to handle loads, which then leads to repetitive stress and inflammation.” Mayo Clinic identifies excessive device use, poor posture, and suboptimal equipment as possible contributors—not proof that one desk arrangement prevents injury. Mayo Clinic’s gaming and esports guidance discusses these risks.

Take short breaks to stretch and let muscles recover, and include time away from the computer. CCOHS recommends breaks in its keyboard and sit/stand guidance, but the cited sources do not establish one universal gaming break interval. If a position feels strained, adjust the setup rather than trying to hold a prescribed posture.

- Your back and feet are supported, with enough room for your thighs and legs.
- Your shoulders are relaxed; your elbows stay close to your body; your wrists remain aligned with your forearms.
- The keyboard and mouse are close enough to use without reaching, and the mouse is not pushed too far away by a cramped surface or tray.
- The monitor is in front of you and readable without leaning; glare is controlled.
- The desk has enough depth, working space, and leg clearance for the arrangement.
- If you switch between sitting and standing, the keyboard, mouse, and screen still feel comfortable in each position.
