To set up a Fire TV Stick 4K, connect it to your TV’s HDMI port, power it according to your model’s instructions, choose the matching HDMI input, then follow the on-screen steps to join Wi-Fi and sign in to an Amazon account. You’ll need your network name and password, an available HDMI port, and the Alexa Voice Remote.
Before you start
- A TV with an available HDMI port
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password
- An Amazon account, or the information needed to create one
- The Fire TV Stick 4K, remote, batteries, and the power accessories supplied with your model
Amazon’s official setup guide says: “Connect your Fire TV Stick to your TV and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.” The included cable and power guidance can differ between generations, so check the instructions for your specific Stick.

Connect the Fire TV Stick 4K to your TV
- Insert the batteries into the Alexa Voice Remote.
- Plug the supplied power cable into the Stick and the appropriate power source for your generation. See the power guidance below before choosing a TV USB port or wall outlet.
- Insert the Stick into an available HDMI port. If the fit is cramped or nearby cables obstruct the connection, use the optional HDMI extender if you have one.
- Turn on the TV. Using the TV remote, select the HDMI input where you connected the Stick.
If the screen is blank, check that the TV is on that input before troubleshooting the Stick.
Power guidance depends on the generation
Do not assume every Fire TV Stick 4K uses the same power arrangement. Amazon’s 2nd-generation guide calls for connecting the USB cable to the power adapter and plugging the adapter into a wall outlet; it says not to connect that model’s USB cable directly to the TV. Amazon’s 3rd-generation guide describes a different arrangement: an included 1.3-foot USB-C cable connected to the TV’s USB-A port. If that cable does not reach, or the Stick displays an insufficient-power message, Amazon says to try a USB-C cable and a 5V 1A adapter connected to a wall outlet. Follow the model-specific guide and any on-screen prompts for your device.

Connect the Stick to Wi-Fi
When the setup screen asks you to choose a network, use either of the available methods:

| Fire TV remote | Choose the manual setup option, select your Wi-Fi network, and follow the on-screen prompts using the remote. |
Enter the network password if prompted. Amazon’s setup instructions describe both options but do not establish that one is faster or more reliable than the other.

Sign in to your Amazon account
After connecting to Wi-Fi, sign in to an existing Amazon account or register a new one. Depending on the prompt, scan the displayed QR code with your phone or enter the activation code at the Amazon address shown on the TV. Complete the remaining on-screen prompts. You can also follow the optional equipment-control prompts if you want the Fire TV remote to control compatible TV or audio equipment.

- No picture: Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the Fire TV Stick.
- Remote not paired: On the 2nd-generation and 3rd-generation instructions, Amazon says to hold the remote’s Home button for about 10 seconds, until the pairing prompt appears.
If your Fire TV Stick won’t connect to Wi-Fi
Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers a network that does not appear, a failed connection, or a “Network connection has been lost” message. Retry the connection after each step:

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- If your Wi-Fi network isn’t showing up, press Back on the remote to refresh the network list.
- Restart the Stick: unplug its power adapter for one minute, then reconnect it.
- If the problem continues, restart the modem and router. Unplug both for one minute. Reconnect the modem first and wait for its internet connection; then reconnect the router and wait for it to connect.
- Move the Stick and router closer together if possible.
- If available, try Ethernet. Some Fire TV devices require an Ethernet adapter.
Do you need an HDMI extender?
No. Amazon describes the HDMI extender as optional. It can help if the Stick is difficult to reach around the TV’s HDMI port, other cables crowd the back of the TV, or a flush-mounted TV has rear-facing ports. Amazon’s 3rd-generation guidance says a compatible 4K extender you already own can be used.
