You can run a YouTube Live encoder continuously on a DigitalOcean Linux Droplet: provision the server, secure access, configure a YouTube live event and encoder, then test and monitor the stream. The Droplet is the always-on host; YouTube remains the ingest destination and viewer platform. The right region and server size depend on current availability and your actual encoding workload—there is no universally best India-region or Droplet size established here.
How the setup works—and what it does not guarantee
A DigitalOcean Droplet is a Linux virtual machine. You install or run an encoder on it, then send the encoded feed to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and stream key. This lets the encoder process continue without keeping a home computer on. It does not guarantee YouTube will accept the feed, uninterrupted playback, viewer delivery, or low latency from India; no India-specific performance or uptime measurement is established here.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs; rotate it if you believe it has been compromised. YouTube explains the stream URL and key in its live stream settings guide.
Check YouTube eligibility before creating the server
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take at least 24 hours, so complete activation well before a scheduled launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Choose a region, Linux image, and Droplet size
Region
During creation, select a datacenter region currently offered in DigitalOcean’s control panel. DigitalOcean describes choosing a nearby datacenter as a good default for performance and low latency. For an India-based channel, check live availability rather than assuming a particular India datacenter exists. If route quality matters, test the connection from the selected server and from the intended audience locations; there is no measured India-to-region result that makes one region a universal recommendation.
Image and compute
Choose a supported Linux image and a size suited to the encoder workload. DigitalOcean specifically lists video and live streaming among CPU-Optimized Droplet use cases, making that family a candidate when the server must encode video. It is not a fixed minimum-size recommendation: CPU demand varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, and whether the encoder transcodes or only remuxes an existing stream. Start with a configuration you can monitor and resize if needed.

Secure the Droplet before running an encoder
- Use SSH-key authentication. Add a public key during creation rather than relying on password-only root access.
- Use a non-root account with sudo. Keep routine administration separate from the root account.
- Apply a cloud firewall. Begin by allowing SSH from the addresses that need administrative access and blocking other inbound traffic. Add inbound rules only if your design requires an exposed service; retain the outbound access needed for system updates and the encoder’s connection to YouTube.
DigitalOcean states: “DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls are a free, stateful firewall service for Droplets.” Its production-ready Droplet setup guide covers the baseline, including SSH, a non-root sudo user, firewalling, backups, and monitoring.

Create the YouTube event and configure the encoder
- Create or select a live event in YouTube Studio and retrieve that event’s stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder. Keep the key secret and confirm the encoder is pointed at the intended event.
- Select a supported ingest protocol and video settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm compatibility among your encoder, codec, and YouTube stream configuration.
- Set bitrate encoding to constant bitrate (CBR) and use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. The current guidance returned for this article lists H.264 recommendations of 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not a measured India-specific network requirement. Verify the live table and its column headings before choosing a setting.
- Configure audio according to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your content, then check the resulting feed for clear, continuous sound.
YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance is the reference for current codec and bitrate combinations. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
Estimate ongoing cost from the live configuration
A continuous stream uses Droplet compute and outbound public-network data transfer. DigitalOcean says plan transfer allowances are pooled across a team’s Droplets, inbound transfer is free, and excess outbound transfer is charged under the current pricing terms. The documented overage rate is $0.01 per GiB; DigitalOcean pricing was last verified 25 August 2026, so check current terms and the allowance available to your team before estimating a bill.

Do not calculate a universal monthly total from an old example size: the server price and transfer allowance depend on the selected configuration and account. Test the stream and monitor it continuously
- Test with representative content. Include the normal video motion and audio, and let the encoder run long enough to reveal resource or connection problems.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and health messages. Confirm that the feed is accepted and that picture and sound are present.
- Verify viewer access. Check the channel or watch page and test playback on a phone as well as your usual device.
- Watch the host and transfer use. Monitor CPU, memory, network activity, and the YouTube stream-health panel while the encoder is running.
- Recheck after changes. Re-test after changing resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, or server size.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparing the encoder in advance, checking preview and accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality.

Troubleshoot common ingest and playback problems
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Confirm the event’s stream URL and key, check that the encoder is running, and verify outbound network access. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
- The encoder connects but YouTube reports an ingest error: Check that the selected format and codec are supported and that the encoder’s bitrate settings match YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube identifies incompatible formats and incorrect bitrate settings as possible causes in its live-stream error-message guide.
- Playback stutters or quality is inconsistent: Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the selected YouTube recommendation, then inspect the host’s CPU and network use. Reduce workload or adjust the stream settings only after checking the current YouTube table and re-testing.
- The stream appears healthy in preview but viewers cannot watch: Recheck event and watch-page accessibility, then test on mobile and another connection. Preview alone does not establish that every viewer can access playback.
- The process stops or the server is overloaded: Inspect the encoder and host resource use, then determine whether the cause is an application failure or insufficient CPU, memory, or network capacity. The cited official setup material does not provide a validated service-manager or auto-restart recipe for a particular encoder, so configure process supervision only with instructions verified for your chosen software.
