How to set up a data-only Android companion phone with a hotspot or data-only SIM

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

The simplest data-only Android companion phone uses your main phone’s hotspot: turn on Wi‑Fi hotspot, give the companion the password, and it is online without its own line. For a phone that must work independently, install a carrier-activated data-only SIM or eSIM in an unlocked, compatible handset. The two approaches differ in setup, battery use, coverage, cost, and whether the companion can remain connected when your main phone is elsewhere.

A data-only connection provides internet access, not an automatic copy of your main phone’s number. Treat ordinary cellular calls and SMS as unavailable unless the provider explicitly includes them; use internet calling and messaging apps when appropriate.

Choose the design before you start

There are two practical ways to make an old or spare Android phone a data-only companion. A hotspot shares the main phone’s existing mobile connection over Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. A data-only SIM or eSIM gives the companion its own connection through a separate plan or an eligible shared-data line.

Decision point Hotspot from the main phone Data-only SIM or eSIM in the companion
Setup effort Usually a few minutes: enable hotspot and join it as a Wi‑Fi network. Requires an unlocked, compatible handset, carrier activation, and SIM or eSIM installation.
Independence The main phone must be nearby, powered, and connected to its carrier network. The companion has its own mobile connection and can be left elsewhere.
Cost Uses the main plan’s tethering allowance; the carrier may charge, throttle, or impose a separate hotspot limit. Uses a separate data plan or an eligible shared-data line; pricing and allowances depend on the provider.
Battery Hotspot operation can drain the main phone quickly, especially while charging another device or serving sustained traffic. Each phone uses its own radio and battery, so there is no hotspot load on the main phone.
Coverage Follows the main phone’s carrier connection and signal. Follows the data-only provider, its roaming rules, and the companion’s supported bands.
Calls and SMS The companion does not automatically inherit the main phone’s cellular number. Internet apps work while the hotspot is available. A data-only line should not be assumed to include voice or SMS. Verify the provider’s terms before relying on it.
Best fit Occasional use, travel, testing, navigation, or a companion kept close to the main phone. Frequent independent use, a device kept separate, or a companion that needs connectivity without the main phone present.

Android menu names and available features vary by Android version, manufacturer, carrier, model, and region. If the paths below do not match your screen exactly, use Settings search for hotspot, tethering, or SIMs.

Prepare the companion phone

Check the hardware and software

  • For a hotspot setup, the companion only needs working Wi‑Fi. Older phones may connect more reliably to a 2.4 GHz hotspot than to a 5 GHz-only network.
  • For a SIM or eSIM setup, confirm that the phone is unlocked and supports the carrier’s network bands. A phone locked to another carrier can reject a perfectly valid SIM.
  • Check the physical SIM size required by the tray. Do not force a card into the slot; use the correct size or an approved adapter supplied for that SIM.
  • For eSIM, verify that the exact model and regional variant support eSIM. Some newer regional models are eSIM-only, while others omit eSIM support entirely.
  • Install pending system updates before activation when practical. Android’s SIM, APN, and tethering screens can change between releases.
  • Back up anything important on an old phone before resetting it or changing carrier settings.

Decide whether the phone needs a number

A data-only design is appropriate for maps, music, streaming, navigation, security cameras, messaging over the internet, and app-based calling. It is not a substitute for a normal voice line unless the provider specifically supplies voice and SMS. Apps that require a phone-number verification may still ask for a number from another line.

Route A: use the main Android phone as a hotspot

Turn on Wi‑Fi hotspot

  1. On the phone that has the mobile data plan, open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi‑Fi hotspot. Manufacturer interfaces may use a slightly different path, such as a Connections or Mobile Hotspot heading.
  2. Turn on Wi‑Fi hotspot. If the switch is unavailable, make sure mobile data is enabled and check the troubleshooting section below.
  3. Open the hotspot entry to view or edit the network name and password. Choose a recognizable name that does not reveal sensitive information and set a strong, unique password.
  4. Leave the hotspot settings screen long enough to confirm that the network is broadcasting. Some phones turn the hotspot off automatically when no device is connected.

Join the hotspot from the companion

  1. On the companion phone, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet or the Wi‑Fi panel.
  2. Select the hotspot’s network name, enter the password exactly as shown on the source phone, and wait for the Wi‑Fi icon to appear.
  3. Open a browser or another online app to confirm that traffic is passing through the source phone. The companion is using Wi‑Fi locally, but the internet connection is still the source phone’s cellular data.

Use Bluetooth tethering when Wi‑Fi is inconvenient

Android also supports Bluetooth tethering. Pair the two phones in Bluetooth settings, then enable Bluetooth tethering under the source phone’s Hotspot & tethering menu. Bluetooth generally offers lower throughput than Wi‑Fi, but it can suit light background traffic or situations where you want the connection discoverable only to a paired device.

Use USB tethering for a wired connection

  1. Connect the phones with a data-capable USB cable. Some charging-only cables cannot carry tethered data.
  2. On the source phone, open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering and turn on USB tethering.
  3. Wait for the companion or connected device to show a network connection, then test it with a browser.

USB tethering is useful when radio interference makes Wi‑Fi unreliable or when the phone will remain physically connected. It also changes the charging behavior of the two devices, so check which phone is supplying power and use a suitable cable or hub.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
  • Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.

Manage battery, data, and security

  • Keep the source phone plugged in during long tethering sessions. Official Android guidance recommends powering devices while tethering, and support documentation warns that hotspot use consumes both battery and mobile data.
  • Check the carrier plan before relying on the connection. Tethering may have a separate allowance, a speed limit after a threshold, an extra fee, or a prohibition on some plans.
  • Set a hotspot timeout if the phone offers one, and turn the hotspot off when finished. This reduces battery drain and prevents an unattended device from remaining open.
  • Use WPA2 or WPA3 security when offered, never an open hotspot for routine use, and change a default password that is printed on the phone or packaging.
  • Remember that the companion’s downloads, video, cloud backups, and app updates count against the source plan’s data. Restrict background data or enable a data warning on the companion if the allowance is limited.

Route B: install a data-only SIM or eSIM

Verify compatibility and account requirements

Before buying or activating anything, check four separate requirements: the phone must be unlocked; its radio bands must match the provider; the physical SIM size or eSIM capability must be supported; and the carrier must allow the exact device type on the plan. Network settings and APN behavior vary by phone, Android version, carrier, and plan, so a SIM that works in one handset may need a different activation process in another.

Have Wi‑Fi available for activation, especially for eSIM downloads. Keep the carrier account credentials, activation code, and any device-identification information supplied by the provider nearby.

Activate an eSIM with a QR code

  1. Connect the companion to Wi‑Fi. An eSIM profile cannot be downloaded if the phone has no working internet path.
  2. Open the provider’s account or activation page and choose its tablet, data-only-device, or equivalent option. Do not select a normal voice line unless that is what you intend to buy.
  3. On the phone, open the SIM-management screen. On Pixel devices, the documented path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, followed by the option to add a SIM or download an eSIM.
  4. Choose the QR-code option and scan the code supplied by the provider. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the profile.
  5. Enable the new SIM for mobile data, then turn Wi‑Fi off briefly and open a web page to verify that the cellular connection works.
  6. Record the profile name and provider support details. If you later reset the phone, the eSIM may need to be reissued or re-downloaded according to the carrier’s policy.

QR-code screens differ by Android release and manufacturer. If the camera does not recognize the code, look for a manual activation-code option in the carrier instructions rather than editing network values at random.

Activate a physical data-only SIM

  1. Obtain the provider’s data-only SIM in the size required by the companion’s tray.
  2. Use the provider’s activation flow. Some services supply a code on the package that you enter before inserting the SIM; others require you to insert the SIM first and activate it from an account or carrier app.
  3. Power the phone off if the manufacturer recommends doing so, eject the tray with the SIM tool, place the card in the indicated orientation, and reinsert the tray without force.
  4. Turn the phone on and wait for network registration. The first connection can take several minutes.
  5. Open the SIM settings and select the data-only line for mobile data. Turn Wi‑Fi off and test a browser, then check the provider’s account page for the device and data allowance.

Follow the provider’s exact order of operations. For example, one documented service uses a package code followed by SIM insertion; another provider may reverse those steps.

Move a physical data-only SIM to another phone

Some carriers bind a physical data-only SIM to the device first used for activation. If moving it produces no service, do not repeatedly reset the phone or edit APN fields. Instead:

  1. Open the carrier account and remove or disconnect the SIM from the old device, if the account offers that control.
  2. Clear any carrier-app storage only when the provider’s instructions specifically require it.
  3. Insert the SIM in the new unlocked, compatible phone.
  4. Run the provider’s activation process again and wait for registration.

Carrier behavior is not universal. A documented support flow for one provider says to remove a physical data-only SIM from the current device’s account settings before using it elsewhere; another provider may use a different release process.

Handle APN settings carefully

Do not copy an APN from another carrier, a forum post, or the main phone. Check the APN only when the data-only provider instructs you to do so, and enter the values exactly as supplied. An incorrect APN can leave the phone showing signal bars while apps cannot reach the internet.

Use dual-SIM controls when the phone has two lines

A dual-SIM Android phone can keep a voice line and a data-only line installed together, or hold two data profiles for different regions or providers. On Pixel documentation, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs to add a SIM or eSIM and choose defaults for calls, texts, and mobile data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose which SIM is the default for calls.
  • Choose which SIM is the default for texts.
  • Choose the SIM used for mobile data.
  • Review whether the phone allows data switching when the preferred SIM loses service.

Only one SIM can be the default for mobile data in the cited Pixel guidance. Dual-SIM and eSIM support still depends on the exact model, Android version, carrier, and region. Before purchasing a physical SIM accessory, check the model number: some regional variants use eSIM only, while others support only a physical tray.

What a data-only phone can and cannot do

Internet services

With either design, the companion can use browsers, maps, cloud storage, streaming services, software updates, and messaging or calling apps that work over the internet. The hotspot design stops working when the source phone is out of range, powered off, out of carrier coverage, or blocked by its data plan. A SIM or eSIM design remains independent but is limited by its own provider’s coverage, roaming terms, and data allowance.

Cellular calls and SMS

Neither design automatically transfers the main phone’s cellular number to the companion. A data-only SIM should not be treated as a normal voice line. If you need calling or messaging, use an internet service that supports the account you have, or keep the voice-capable SIM in the phone responsible for ordinary calls and texts. Confirm with the provider before assuming that emergency, short-code, verification, or premium messages will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot common failures

The hotspot switch is missing or disabled

  • Confirm that mobile data is turned on and that the source phone has usable carrier service.
  • Turn off Data Saver if the phone requires it to be disabled before tethering.
  • Check the carrier account for a tethering restriction, separate hotspot allowance, throttle, or additional charge.
  • Restart the phone after changing the plan or SIM. If the option remains unavailable, contact the carrier with the exact phone model and Android version.

The companion sees the hotspot but will not connect

  • Re-enter the password carefully and forget the saved network before trying again.
  • Change the hotspot band to 2.4 GHz temporarily for an older companion or a device that cannot see a 5 GHz network.
  • Move the phones close together and disable battery-saving restrictions that may shut down the hotspot during setup.
  • Temporarily disable a VPN or private-DNS setting on either phone while diagnosing. Restore it after the connection works.
  • Restart both phones if the network appears connected but receives no address.

The SIM shows no service

  • Verify that the handset is unlocked and that the SIM is the correct size and orientation.
  • Confirm activation in the provider account and check that the exact device is supported.
  • Turn Airplane mode off, restart the phone, and wait for registration in an area with known coverage.
  • For eSIM, confirm that the profile finished downloading and is enabled in the SIM settings.
  • If the SIM was moved, complete the provider’s account-disconnect and reactivation steps instead of repeating insertion.

Signal appears, but apps have no internet

  • Turn Wi‑Fi off and test cellular data directly.
  • Check that the data-only SIM is selected as the mobile-data default on a dual-SIM phone.
  • Review the APN only against the provider’s official instructions; do not substitute another provider’s values.
  • Check the phone’s data limit, roaming setting, and whether the plan has exhausted its high-speed allowance.
  • Disable a VPN or private DNS temporarily to rule out a local routing problem.

The connection works but the battery drains quickly

  • Reduce the hotspot timeout and turn tethering off when the companion is finished.
  • Keep the source phone on a charger during extended hotspot sessions, as Android and device support guidance recommend.
  • Use a power bank for travel, but avoid trapping a hot phone under clothing or bedding while it is charging and broadcasting.
  • For a SIM-equipped companion, review which apps are allowed to run background sync and install updates only over Wi‑Fi when appropriate.

A practical decision checklist

Choose a hotspot when

  • You need connectivity only occasionally or while traveling with the main phone.
  • You want to avoid activating another SIM or eSIM.
  • The carrier’s tethering policy and allowance are sufficient for the companion’s expected use.
  • You can keep both phones nearby and keep the source phone charged.

Choose a data-only SIM or eSIM when

  • The companion must work while the main phone is elsewhere.
  • You use the device frequently for navigation, streaming, work, or travel.
  • The phone is unlocked, compatible with the provider’s bands, and supports the required SIM type.
  • You have confirmed the provider’s activation process, coverage, roaming rules, and data-only limitations.

Test before relying on it

  1. Connect the phone using the method you plan to use in real life.
  2. Turn off Wi‑Fi when testing a SIM or eSIM so you know cellular data is working.
  3. Open a browser, map, and the most important app for your use case.
  4. Check that the expected data SIM is selected and that the carrier account shows the correct device.
  5. Run the test again from the location where the companion will normally be used.

Once the test passes, label the hotspot credentials or SIM profile clearly, monitor the relevant data allowance, and keep the carrier’s activation instructions available. That prevents a minor password, device-binding, or APN problem from becoming a connectivity outage when you need the companion phone.
