For an always-on YouTube music channel, the lowest-risk starting point is YouTube Studio’s Audio Library. Check each track’s attribution terms, and include the required credit for Creative Commons tracks. For music from elsewhere, verify that the license expressly covers continuous live streaming, looping and archived streams—and ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before you go live. A license can reduce risk, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube will not interrupt a stream.
What “copyright-safe” means for a live playlist
“Free,” “royalty-free,” a purchase receipt or a credit in the description does not by itself establish permission for a 24/7 livestream. You need rights that cover the actual use, and YouTube’s automated enforcement may still flag licensed third-party music. YouTube defines safe music as public-domain music or music you have permission to use from the copyright owner; it also cautions that only music and sound effects from its Audio Library are known to YouTube to be copyright-safe. For an always-on channel, assess both the rights and the platform mechanics. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction, and YouTube’s guidance is not a legal determination for every territory. If the rights are unclear, get qualified legal advice rather than treating this checklist as legal advice.

| YouTube Audio Library | YouTube says downloaded Audio Library music and sound effects are copyright-safe and will not be claimed through Content ID. | Check the attribution setting for every track. | Creator Music | Track-specific licenses or revenue-sharing terms for eligible videos. | Do not use it as a livestream license: YouTube says Creator Music licenses do not cover live streams or Shorts. Its documented availability is for U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending; track conditions and territories vary. YouTube’s guidance says paid licenses were deprecated on August 10, 2026, with the catalog shifting toward no-cost licenses and revenue sharing, so check current availability and terms in Studio. | Original music | YouTube identifies music created by the channel as a possible route. | Make sure all contributors and recording/master rights are cleared and retained. A general platform guide does not settle the terms of a particular production contract. YouTube Help: Tips to find safe music |
| Public-domain or Creative Commons music | May be usable depending on the work’s status, license and applicable jurisdiction. | Check the composition and recording rights where relevant, follow license conditions such as attribution, and do not assume the platform guarantees no claims. Build the playlist using YouTube Studio’s Audio Library
- Open the library. In YouTube Studio, open Audio Library. Search and filter tracks by genre, mood, duration and attribution to find music suited to the loop.
- Check each track’s terms. The library includes tracks with no attribution requirement and Creative Commons tracks that require attribution. Read the individual track details rather than assuming every library entry has identical conditions. YouTube Help: Use music and sound effects from the Audio Library
- Keep a rights record. For each selection, record its title, artist, source or download, license or usage terms, required credit and any limits. Keeping this information with your channel’s production records is a practical safeguard, not a YouTube-prescribed form.
- Add required attribution. For a Creative Commons track, copy the attribution text from its license panel and include it in the video description as required. Do not rely on a “Music in this video” section instead of the required credit. YouTube Help: Use music and sound effects from the Audio Library
- Assemble and review the loop. Check that the selected tracks fit the intended playlist and that their terms permit your planned use. If the stream will be archived, treat the resulting VOD as a separate use to verify.
Clear third-party music before going live
- Read the actual license. Confirm that it covers commercial or monetized use if relevant, continuous live transmission, repeating or looping, archived VODs, your intended territories, the particular channel and the term of use. “Royalty-free” is not a substitute for those permissions.
- Check both sets of rights. Where relevant, verify rights in the composition and the specific sound recording. Public-domain status or permission for one does not necessarily resolve rights in the other.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. Request that the music owner or provider add your channel to its allowlist before the broadcast. Save written confirmation. YouTube warns that an unallowlisted channel’s live stream can be interrupted even when the third-party content is licensed. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
- Test the arrangement. Run a short stream using the licensed workflow before depending on it for continuous broadcasting. A test is useful for catching practical problems, but it does not establish a guarantee against future claims or interruptions.
- Monitor the broadcast and archive. Watch YouTube Studio while live and check the archived stream after it ends. Live detection may interrupt a broadcast, and a Content ID claim may appear on an archive afterward. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
What to do if a track is flagged or the stream stops
- A warning or interruption appears during the live stream: Stop using the disputed track until you have resolved the rights issue. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may warn, replace, interrupt or terminate a broadcast. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
- The license seems valid but YouTube still detects music: Contact the rights owner or provider about Content ID allowlisting and confirm that the license covers the exact channel and use. Keep the written permission and allowlisting confirmation with your records.
- A claim appears on the archive: Review the claim and the track’s actual license scope. Description credit alone does not override Content ID detection, and disputing a claim does not create permission you did not already have. YouTube Help: Tips to find safe music
- You cannot confirm the rights: Remove the track from the playlist and use a source whose terms you can verify. Do not label a track “claim-proof”: no route described here guarantees that outcome. YouTube Help: Tips to find safe music · YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
