Splinter Cell: Double Agent does not have documented native gamepad controls on PC. The 2006 Ubisoft/Prima Games manual lists only mouse and keyboard as supported peripherals. A controller can still be attempted as a workaround: Windows must detect it, then a mapper such as x360ce can translate an Xbox 360-style pad for the Steam release. The method comes from a 2015 Steam Community report, not official support, and users reported inconsistent right-stick and trigger behavior.
What controller support actually means in the PC version
The first decision is whether you need a native setting or a compatibility workaround. For Double Agent on PC, the published documentation supports the latter interpretation. The 2006 Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent PC manual has a “Solo Controls” section for keyboard and mouse. It assigns movement to W, A, S and D, action/confirm to E, and camera movement to the mouse. Its hardware list says, “Peripherals Supported: Mouse, keyboard.” It does not include a gamepad control map.

That omission matters because there is no documented in-game controller menu that you can follow. A controller may work only when another program presents its inputs in a form the game understands. Treat any successful setup as an unofficial compatibility layer rather than guaranteed Xbox, PlayStation or generic USB-pad support.
There is also a date difference in the operating-system information. The original manual names Windows XP, while Steam’s current support page, checked on October 13, 2026, says Double Agent can be played on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Those statements describe different eras of PC compatibility. Steam’s Windows 10/11 statement does not establish that a particular controller, wireless adapter or remapping utility will work.

Before you change game files
Identify the installation you are configuring
The community procedure described for an Xbox 360 controller targets the Steam installation and its SCDA-OfflineSystem directory. If your copy is from another store or uses a different folder layout, do not assume that path applies. Find the directory containing the game’s executable and its System subfolder, and use the instructions supplied by the mapper for that edition.
Have a recovery plan
- Close Double Agent and Steam before adding or changing mapper files.
- Make a backup copy of the original
Systemfolder. A renamed copy outside the game directory is sufficient. - Keep a keyboard and mouse connected so you can complete setup and remove files if the game stops responding.
- Use a current, trusted release of the mapping utility. The 2015 discussion warns that files and links in the thread may need replacement; do not treat an old attachment as a current or endorsed download.
Step 1: Verify that Windows sees the controller
Do this before launching the game or a mapper. A remapping program cannot correct a controller that the operating system does not enumerate.
- For a wired pad, connect it directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub. For a wireless pad, pair its receiver or Bluetooth connection in Windows and wait until the device reports that it is connected.
- Open Windows’ controller test interface. You can search for Set up USB game controllers or run
joy.cplfrom the Start menu or Run dialog. - Select the controller, choose its properties and use the Test tab. Move both analog sticks, press every face button, press the D-pad and squeeze both triggers.
- Confirm that each control produces one distinct input and returns to neutral when released. If an axis is already stuck or two controls move together here, fix the cable, pairing, driver or hardware problem first.
Record what Windows calls the axes. Different pads expose triggers as a combined axis, separate axes or buttons. That detail becomes important if the mapper later makes the camera stick behave like a trigger.

Step 2: Install and place the mapping layer
A 2015 Steam Community post titled Wireless Xbox 360 Controller – Solved describes using x360ce with the Steam version. Its sequence is to put the utility files in the game’s SCDA-OfflineSystem directory, configure the controller in x360ce, save the profile and then launch the game. The post also contains reports that the setup worked for some players and that the right analog stick sometimes acted as the right trigger for another player.
Use that folder location as a version-specific example, not as a universal recipe:
- With the game closed, open the Steam installation folder and then
SCDA-OfflineSystem. - Copy the original folder to your backup location before adding anything.
- Place the x360ce files required by the version of the utility you are using in that
Systemdirectory, following that utility’s own architecture and installation instructions. Do not copy a random file from an old forum attachment. - Start the mapper from the location where its files were placed. If Windows asks for permission to access the folder, approve it only when you obtained the files from a source you trust.
The community post does not prove that every x360ce release, controller or present-day Windows configuration behaves the same way. If your installation is not the Steam release, stop at this point and look for the mapper’s instructions for your edition rather than forcing files into an unrelated folder.

Step 3: Build a practical control map
Because the manual documents keyboard and mouse rather than a gamepad layout, map controls by function. The labels below are a usability starting point, not an official Double Agent profile.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Game function | Documented PC input | Controller assignment to test | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move Sam | W, A, S and D | Left analog stick | Forward, backward and both strafing directions respond without drift. |
| Move the camera | Mouse | Right analog stick | Horizontal and vertical camera movement are independent and correctly oriented. |
| Action or confirm | E | A face button or another comfortable button | The same button activates and confirms an on-screen action when the game expects E. |
| Other keyboard commands | See the manual’s full Solo Controls list | Assign only after the essential controls work | No two important actions share an unintended button or axis. |
| Triggers and D-pad | No gamepad mapping is documented | Leave available for actions you can test | Each trigger and D-pad direction reports separately in the mapper and in-game. |
Start with movement, camera and action/confirm. Those are the controls explicitly identified in the manual and the ones needed to determine whether the workaround is usable. Add less frequently used commands only after the core map is stable. If the mapper offers dead-zone, sensitivity or inversion settings, change one setting at a time and test the result rather than importing an unverified profile.
Keep axes separate
The most specific failure reported in the community thread is a right analog stick that sometimes behaves like the right trigger. In the mapper, inspect the assignments for the right-stick horizontal axis, right-stick vertical axis and both trigger inputs. Remove duplicate assignments, make sure a trigger is not bound to the same physical axis as a stick, and save the profile again. If vertical movement is reversed, use the mapper’s invert option only for that axis. Return the stick to neutral and retest after every change.

Step 4: Save, launch and test in a low-risk situation
- Save the controller profile in the mapper and close the mapper if its instructions say the game should start separately.
- Launch Double Agent from Steam. Keep the keyboard and mouse nearby in case the game opens with a menu focus that the pad cannot control.
- At the main menu, test navigation and confirm. Then load a save or area where you can move without risking an important objective.
- Check the left stick in all four directions, the right stick on both axes, both triggers, every face button you assigned, the D-pad and the action/confirm button.
- Watch for delayed, repeated or simultaneous inputs. A mapping that moves the character is not finished if the camera, triggers or confirmations are unreliable.
- Only after the complete test should you rely on the controller for a mission. Keep the backup of the original
Systemfolder until you have completed several launches.
Wired versus wireless controllers
The available evidence does not establish that one current controller model is better than another. Choose based on checks you can perform on your own PC.
| Check | Wired connection | Wireless connection |
|---|---|---|
| Windows recognition | Confirm the USB device appears in joy.cpl and passes the Test tab. |
Confirm pairing or the receiver connection remains active while you test every input. |
| Mapper compatibility | Verify that the mapper sees the same axes and buttons Windows reports. | Verify that reconnecting does not change the controller’s order or axis names. |
| Failure isolation | Try another USB port or cable if the device disappears. | Check battery level, receiver placement and interference if inputs drop out. |
| Gameplay test | Check both sticks, triggers, D-pad and assigned actions in a save you can abandon. | Repeat the same test after restarting the game and after the controller has been idle. |
A PC-compatible Xbox 360-style controller is a plausible choice because the community example uses one, but that example is not proof of plug-and-play support for any particular current product. Before buying hardware, confirm that Windows recognizes it and that its analog sticks and triggers can be assigned independently by your chosen mapper.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshooting by symptom
Windows does not list the controller
- Reconnect a wired controller directly to another USB port and repeat the
joy.cpltest. - For wireless devices, remove and pair the device again, then test it before opening the game.
- If no input appears in Windows, do not continue editing Double Agent files; the issue is below the game layer.
Windows sees the controller, but Double Agent ignores it
- Confirm that the mapper files are in the Steam installation’s
SCDA-OfflineSystemdirectory, as described by the community procedure. - Close the game, reopen the mapper, verify that the profile is saved for the detected controller, and launch the game only after saving.
- Remove third-party files and restore your backup if the game began failing immediately after they were added. Re-test the unmodified game with keyboard and mouse.
- If you use a non-Steam edition, do not assume the Steam folder or the same file set applies.
The right stick moves the camera and activates the right trigger
This is the clearest problem reported by another user in the 2015 thread. Return to the mapper’s axis page and inspect every right-stick and trigger entry. Clear any duplicate binding, assign the stick’s horizontal and vertical axes separately, and confirm that the triggers use the inputs shown by the Windows test. Save, restart the game and test again. If the conflict returns, the controller may expose a layout the selected mapper profile does not handle correctly; try a different profile or use the keyboard and mouse rather than adding more random bindings.

The camera moves in the wrong direction or feels unstable
- Use the mapper’s per-axis invert option for the affected direction instead of inverting the entire controller.
- Check for a nonzero stick value in Windows’ test screen. Drift there will be visible in the game too.
- Make small sensitivity or dead-zone changes, saving and testing one change at a time.
Only some buttons work
Return to the documented basics: left-stick movement should correspond to W/A/S/D, the camera should use the mouse-equivalent right-stick axes, and the action/confirm button should correspond to E. Test each assignment separately. Do not assume that a generic “Xbox” preset has mapped every Double Agent command; the game has no official PC gamepad map in the manual.
The game becomes unstable after adding the mapper
Exit the game, remove the added mapper files or restore the backed-up System folder, and confirm that keyboard and mouse controls work again. Then check the mapper’s documentation for the correct file set for your Windows version and game build. The old Steam discussion explicitly notes that its files and links may need replacement, so reproducing its attachments without checking their age can create avoidable problems.
What about Steam Input?
Steam offers controller-remapping features, and a separate Steam discussion describes Steam Input and other remappers for the first Splinter Cell game. That discussion is not a Double Agent guide. It mentions axis-binding problems in that other title, so it is useful context for why careful axis testing matters, but it does not establish that the same profile, layout or menu path works for Double Agent. Do not copy a first-game configuration and treat it as verified support for Double Agent.
When the workaround is not worth pursuing
Use the keyboard and mouse if Windows cannot provide stable separate axes, if the mapper repeatedly combines the right stick with a trigger, or if adding files makes the Steam version unreliable. The manual’s documented controls remain the supported baseline. A controller is worthwhile only when movement, camera, action/confirm, triggers and other essential inputs all pass repeated tests without conflicts.
If you are deciding whether to buy a controller solely for this game, regard compatibility as an experiment. The cited community report shows that an Xbox 360 controller worked for some players through x360ce, but also records a right-stick/trigger defect and does not validate every model, edition or modern Windows setup. Buy only hardware that your PC recognizes and that you can return or use elsewhere if the workaround fails.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- The official PC manual documents mouse and keyboard controls and lists those two peripherals; it does not document native gamepad support.
- Steam’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility statement is separate from controller compatibility; the manual’s Windows XP requirement is historical.
- The practical Steam example places x360ce files in
SCDA-OfflineSystem, configures an Xbox 360-style pad and then launches the game, but it is an unofficial, version-sensitive workaround. - Mixed reports, including a right-stick acting as a right trigger, mean every axis and button must be tested before a mission.
- Keep a keyboard and mouse available, back up the original files, and restore them if the mapping layer causes instability.
