Steam lists full controller support, specifically Xbox controllers and DualSense controllers over USB, and the developers recommend playing with a controller. On first launch, choose whether A or B is your confirm button, then use the in-game Controller tab to check or remap every action.
Quick setup: get playing in a few minutes
The game uses an Xbox-style control guide even when you connect a PlayStation pad. The labels are not a sign that your DualSense is unsupported; the corresponding physical positions are used instead. Follow this order so the game detects the pad and saves your preferred layout correctly.

- Connect the controller first. Plug in an Xbox-compatible controller using the PC connection it supports. If you are using a DualSense, connect it to the PC with a USB cable. Steam’s listing identifies DualSense support as USB-only for this title, so do not rely on a wireless DualSense connection.
- Start the game from Steam. Launch Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse after the pad is connected. Starting first and plugging in later can leave you at the keyboard until the game is restarted.
- Answer the first-launch prompt. The controls guide asks you to choose a button to confirm with: A or B. Select the convention that feels natural to you. This choice establishes which of those two buttons the game treats as confirmation in its menus.
- Open the Controller sub-tab. Inspect the bindings before beginning a stage. The screen uses Xbox button names; with a PlayStation controller, use the button in the matching physical position.
- Apply any edits explicitly. After changing a binding, choose Apply the Changes. The guide identifies Space as the apply key. Close the tab only after the modification has been applied.
Steam also lists a keyboard-only option. That makes keyboard input a practical fallback for menu navigation or for diagnosing whether a problem is limited to controller detection.
Which controllers work with the Steam version?
The Steam store page lists Full Controller Support and names two device families: Xbox controllers and DualSense controllers. It separately lists a keyboard-only option, so a controller is recommended but not required.

| Controller choice | Connection guidance | Button convention in the game | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox-compatible controller | Use the normal PC connection supported by your controller. Steam’s listing does not restrict Xbox controllers to USB. | Matches the on-screen A, B, X and Y labels directly. | Players who want the same letters shown in the controls guide. |
| Sony DualSense | USB connection is required for the support identified on the Steam listing. The listing does not claim wireless DualSense support for this game. | Use the matching physical positions: Cross for A, Circle for B, Square for X and Triangle for Y. | Players who prefer a PlayStation layout and have a USB cable available. |
| Keyboard | No controller connection is needed. | Keyboard controls are available as a separate option; the controller layout below does not describe the keyboard mapping. | Fallback input or players who do not want to use a pad. |
“Supported” here means the device categories identified by the current Steam metadata, not every third-party pad that happens to resemble them. If a generic controller is not recognized, test with an Xbox-compatible pad or a USB-connected DualSense before assuming the game itself is malfunctioning.
What to do when the game asks you to choose A or B
On the first launch, the controls guide presents a confirmation choice between A and B. This is a convention choice rather than a hardware test: pick the button you want to use for confirming menu selections.
Using an Xbox-style pad
Choose A if you want the conventional Xbox arrangement in which A confirms and B backs out. Choose B if that is the convention you prefer. The prompt is the point at which the game records your choice, so make it before evaluating the rest of the layout.
Using a DualSense
The interface still calls the positions A and B. On a DualSense, A corresponds to the Cross (✕) position and B corresponds to the Circle (○) position. Select the option that matches the physical button you want to use for confirmation; the game’s later prompts continue to use the Xbox-style names.

- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
If you selected the wrong option
Open the in-game Controller sub-tab and review the bindings. If the confirmation behavior is still not what you want, change the relevant binding and use Apply the Changes before closing the tab. The guide documents Space as the apply key, so leaving the tab without applying can make it appear that an edit failed.
Default controller layout
The controls guide documents the following default Xbox-style mapping. The PlayStation column gives the equivalent physical position on a DualSense or another PlayStation-style pad.
| Action | Xbox control | PlayStation position |
|---|---|---|
| Move | Left stick (D-pad alternative) | Left stick or D-pad |
| Jump | A | Cross (✕) |
| Dodge | B | Circle (○) |
| Attack | X | Square (□) |
| Cast Spell | Y | Triangle (△) |
| Arcane Whip | RT | R2 |
| Holy Light | LT | L2 |
| Interact | RB | R1 |
| Heal | LB | L1 |
| Observe | Right stick | Right stick |
| Map | View button | Matching system button |
| Equipment | Menu button | Matching system button |
The guide also reports 0.75 as the default for both Motion sensitivity and Eye sensitivity. Those are documented defaults, not performance measurements. Check them again after a game update if the camera or viewing behavior feels different.

Remapping is handled inside the game rather than by guessing at a Steam-wide layout. Use the Controller sub-tab whenever you need a different arrangement for accessibility, a preferred grip, or a different convention between Xbox and PlayStation pads.

- With the game running, open the controls interface and select the Controller sub-tab.
- Locate the action you want to change, such as Jump, Dodge, Attack or Heal.
- Assign the physical button or stick direction you want to use. Remember that the labels on this screen are Xbox labels even when the connected device is a DualSense.
- Review the complete list for conflicts. A change that makes one action easier can leave another action without a convenient button.
- Choose Apply the Changes. The controls guide identifies Space as the apply key.
- Close the Controller sub-tab and test the edited action in a safe area before relying on it during a difficult encounter.
If a change disappears after closing the tab, repeat it and apply it before leaving. The documented apply command is separate from merely selecting a new binding.
Troubleshooting controller problems
The game does not respond to the controller
- Quit the game, connect the controller, and launch it again. The recommended setup order is connection first, launch second.
- Confirm that the pad is one of the families named by Steam: an Xbox-compatible controller or a DualSense connected by USB.
- Use the keyboard-only option to verify that the game itself is running and that the issue is limited to controller input.
- Open the Controller sub-tab and check whether bindings are present before attempting to remap them.
A DualSense works by cable but not wirelessly
This behavior is consistent with the published support scope. Steam identifies DualSense support as USB only for this game and does not promise wireless DualSense operation. Keep the controller connected by USB while playing rather than treating wireless failure as evidence that the game is broken.
The on-screen names do not match my PlayStation controller
The controls guide uses Xbox terminology for the interface. Translate by position: A is Cross, B is Circle, X is Square and Y is Triangle; RT and LT are R2 and L2; RB and LB are R1 and L1. The sticks, View-equivalent and Menu-equivalent controls remain in their corresponding positions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMy remapping did not stick
Changing a field is not the same as committing it. Return to the Controller sub-tab, make the edit again, select Apply the Changes using the documented Space command, and only then close the tab. Recheck the action immediately afterward.

Menus are difficult to navigate with the pad
Use the keyboard-only option as a temporary input method while you inspect or change the controller layout. Once the bindings are corrected and applied, return to the pad for gameplay. This fallback is part of the Steam listing and does not require replacing the controller.
The camera or visual controls feel too fast or too slow
Check Motion sensitivity and Eye sensitivity in the controls interface. The documented starting value for each is 0.75. Adjust from there, apply the change, and verify the result; the guide’s values are defaults and may be worth rechecking after patches.

SteamDB currently marks Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse as Playable on Steam Deck. Its configuration record says the default controller configuration is fully functional, all functionality is accessible with that configuration, controller glyphs match the device, and the default graphics configuration performs well on the tested build.

Choosing between Xbox and DualSense
Both named controller families can be sensible choices, but they solve different practical problems.
- Choose an Xbox-compatible controller if you want the letters on the physical buttons to match the A, B, X and Y prompts shown by the game. Its PC connection method depends on the controller, and Steam’s listing does not impose the DualSense USB-only restriction on Xbox pads.
- Choose a DualSense if you already prefer the PlayStation shape and are comfortable using a USB cable. Expect Xbox-style labels in the menus and translate them by physical position.
- Choose the keyboard option if you need a fallback for setup, menu navigation or a controller-detection diagnosis. Controller play remains the developer-recommended approach.
There is no published controller-latency statistic or independent performance benchmark for these options. The available compatibility information establishes support and configuration behavior, not a measured response-time winner.
Final verification checklist
Before starting a serious play session, confirm each item below:
- The controller was connected before the game launched.
- The device is an Xbox-compatible pad or a USB-connected DualSense.
- The first-launch A-or-B confirmation choice matches your preferred convention.
- The Controller sub-tab shows the actions you expect, translated correctly if you use a PlayStation pad.
- Any remapping was committed with Apply the Changes (Space).
- Motion sensitivity and Eye sensitivity are set to values you can control; the documented defaults are 0.75 for each.
- You know the keyboard-only option is available if you need a temporary fallback.
What the current Steam listing establishes
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse released on Steam on 14 October 2026. The Steam listing identifies KONAMI as publisher and KONAMI and Evil Empire as developers, lists Full Controller Support, names Xbox controllers and DualSense controllers (USB only), and states: “The developers recommend playing this game with a controller.” The same listing identifies a keyboard-only option. The default button assignments and the 0.75 sensitivity values come from the 2026 controls guide, while the Steam Deck status and 5 October 2026 test date come from SteamDB.
