Connect your preferred input device before launching Poly Fighter, confirm that Windows sees it, then read the live controls screen inside the game. Poly Fighter is a Windows game distributed through Steam and is currently in Early Access. What Poly Fighter supports right now
Poly Fighter is a single-player roguelike fighting game from HeartLoop Games. Steam lists HeartLoop Games as both developer and publisher, with a release date of 13 October 2026. Its store description emphasizes approachable controls and a run-based structure in which you learn new moves from defeated opponents and build a personal fighting style.
The game is an Early Access release. HeartLoop Games says this phase is being used to tune moves, balance, difficulty, unexpected combinations and quality-of-life details with player feedback. Controls, menu wording and input behavior can therefore change after an update. Treat the controls screen in your installed build as the authority, rather than a key chart copied from another site or an older video.

The launch announcement describes 16 playable fighters, hundreds of moves, perks and upgrades, and three modes: Classic, Cozy and Fierce. It also lists Steam Deck compatibility and 13 languages. Those features do not change the basic Windows setup, but they explain why an update can alter prompts or available options.

Choose your device before opening the game
A controller is not required by the published information. The Controller tag means a conventional PC gamepad is supported as an input category; it does not establish that a specific Xbox, PlayStation or fight-stick model is required or officially certified. A keyboard is also a practical option, provided your build exposes the bindings you need.

- Use a controller first if you already own a USB or wireless XInput-style gamepad and prefer analog movement or a familiar face-button layout.
- Use a keyboard first if you want direct, digital directional presses, already play keyboard-focused games, or do not own a gamepad.
- Keep both available if you are comparing them, but test one device at a time during initial setup so the active-input prompts are unambiguous.
Do not install a third-party mapper as a first step. Start with the device connected and the game’s native input path; add Steam Input configuration only when you need it or when the native path fails.
Set up a controller on Windows and Steam
1. Connect or pair the controller before launching
- For a wired pad, plug the USB cable directly into the PC rather than a loose, unpowered hub. For a wireless pad, pair it in Windows first and charge or replace its batteries.
- Wait for Windows to finish installing or recognizing the device. If you are using a wireless receiver, connect that receiver before opening Steam.
Connecting first matters because some games select the first available input device when they start. Launching with no controller attached and plugging it in later can leave the game focused on keyboard input until you restart it.

2. Confirm that Windows detects it
Open Windows’ game-controller panel and check that the device appears and responds to button presses or stick movement. One built-in route is to press Win+R, enter joy.cpl, and open the device’s properties; Windows versions can present the same check through their Bluetooth or USB device settings. The exact panel appearance depends on your Windows build.
If the controller does not appear in Windows, Poly Fighter cannot correct that problem. Try a different USB port or cable, repeat wireless pairing, charge the device, remove duplicate pairings, and install the manufacturer’s current Windows driver if one is required. Test again in the Windows panel before changing Steam settings.

3. Start Steam and launch Poly Fighter
With Windows detection confirmed, start Steam and launch Poly Fighter while the controller remains connected. Steam’s Controller tag makes this the sensible baseline. Avoid opening a remapping utility at the same time; two programs translating the same button can produce duplicate or contradictory commands.
4. Read the active controls screen
Open the game’s controls or settings screen before beginning a serious run. Some builds expose a controls page from the title screen, while others place it under a pause menu or a general settings tab. Steam’s controller configuration can also be available from the game’s library or overlay, but the wording and location can vary by Steam client and game build.
Keep the default layout for your first test. Write down the prompts shown for movement, light, medium and heavy attacks, special techniques, pause, confirm and back. The official Poly Fighter pages do not publish a permanent button chart, so the labels displayed by your installed build are the reliable reference.

5. Test every essential action
Enter training, if your current build provides it, or use the first low-stakes encounter as a test area. Check the following individually rather than assuming one working button proves the whole pad is configured:

- Light, medium and heavy attacks.
- Special or technique inputs, including any directional or motion sequence displayed on screen.
- Pause, menu navigation, confirm and cancel/back.
- Any guard, dodge, interact or run-specific action shown for the selected fighter.
Watch for a mismatch between the physical button and the on-screen prompt. A game can receive input while still displaying a different prompt set, which is a sign to check the active layout rather than to press random buttons.
6. Remap only after detection works
If one button is uncomfortable or unrecognized, return to the controls screen and change only that binding. Apply or save the profile, then repeat the same test. Changing several actions at once makes it difficult to identify which assignment caused a new conflict.
When Steam Input is enabled, compare the game’s native layout with the Steam layout. Choose one layer as the source of truth for each action. A button mapped to attack in Steam and to a different action in the game can feel like a hardware fault even though both layers are functioning.
Set up and remap the keyboard
1. Open the controls screen before starting a run
- Make sure the keyboard is connected and working in another Windows application.
- Launch Poly Fighter and open its controls or settings screen before selecting a fighter or beginning a run.
- Read the displayed movement, attack, special, pause and menu keys. Do not copy a key map from another fighting game: no official Poly Fighter keyboard table is published, and defaults may change during Early Access.
2. Build a layout around your hand position
If the game exposes editable bindings, start with a compact cluster. Many players find W, A, S and D comfortable for movement, while others prefer the arrow keys. Place attack keys close enough to reach without lifting the movement hand; the exact letters or symbols are your choice because the game, not a generic fighting-game convention, determines which actions are available for remapping.

Keep frequently chained attacks in a consistent left-to-right or top-to-bottom pattern. Reserve a key with a large, easy-to-reach surface for pause or menu access so you do not hit it accidentally during combat. If the screen offers separate bindings for confirm and back, assign both and test them outside combat.
3. Test directional and motion inputs
After applying a keyboard layout, test a neutral press, each cardinal direction, diagonals and any motion sequence shown by the game. Digital keys can produce very clean directions, but simultaneous presses may be difficult if several actions share neighboring keys. If a motion fails, move one action to a less crowded key and test again rather than assuming the game ignored the entire keyboard.
4. Save the profile and verify it after returning to gameplay
Use the screen’s save, apply or accept command if one is shown, then enter training or a low-stakes encounter. Repeat the complete action list: movement, each attack strength, specials, pause, confirm and back. Return to the controls page once more to ensure the assignments persisted. Early Access updates can reset or rename options, so recheck after a major patch.
5. Avoid mixed-device confusion
If a controller is also connected, press a key and a controller button while watching the prompts. Confirm which device the game treats as active input. Do not change the keyboard and controller layouts simultaneously; establish one working profile, then configure the other. This makes it clear whether a failure belongs to the device, the selected profile or the game’s input focus.

For a fair comparison, perform the same sequence with each device: walk in both directions, execute every attack strength, perform a special, open and close the pause menu, and repeat a motion input. Reliability matters more than what another player calls the “correct” layout.
Troubleshoot a controller that is not detected
Windows does not see the device
- Replace the USB cable or try another port.
- For wireless hardware, repeat pairing, charge the battery and move the receiver away from sources of interference.
- Close other controller utilities, then reconnect one device only.
- Check the Windows game-controller panel again. Do not proceed to Poly Fighter until the device responds there.
Windows sees it, but Poly Fighter does not
- Close Poly Fighter completely.
- Disconnect the controller, wait briefly, reconnect it and confirm Windows detection.
- Restart Steam, then launch the game with the controller already connected.
- Check the game’s controls/settings screen and, if available, Steam’s controller configuration.
- If more than one controller is attached, disconnect the extras and test one at a time.
This sequence removes the common “connected after launch” and “wrong device selected” causes without changing several settings at once.
Buttons work, but the wrong action occurs
First determine whether the error is in the game’s native layout or Steam Input. Temporarily compare the two configurations, then keep only the mapping you intend to use. Resetting to the default layout and remapping one action at a time is safer than importing an unknown community profile.
The game shows controller prompts while you use the keyboard, or vice versa
Press one input device at a time and observe which prompt changes. Disconnect the inactive device during testing, restart the game if necessary, and configure the active profile. Mixed prompts are not proof that either device is defective; they can simply indicate that both devices are sending input.
Inputs stop working after an update
Reopen the live controls screen and record the current assignments again. Early Access development can change controls, balance and menus, and HeartLoop Games has said that ongoing work includes move tuning and quality-of-life improvements. Reapply your profile, test in a low-stakes encounter and report a repeatable issue through the game’s current support or community channels if the problem remains.
A repeatable pre-run checklist
- The controller is connected and visible in Windows, or the keyboard has confirmed focus.
- Only the device you intend to test is active.
- The in-game controls screen has been read after the latest update.
- Movement, light, medium and heavy attacks, specials, pause, confirm and back all respond.
- Any remapped action was saved or applied.
- Steam Input is either intentionally configured or left out of the path, not accidentally duplicated.
- You have tested the layout in training or a low-stakes encounter before committing to a run.
Once those checks pass, use the device that gives you the most consistent timing and the least hand strain. Poly Fighter’s Early Access status means the on-screen controls remain more dependable than any fixed key chart, so make the live settings page part of your setup routine.
