Configure the replacement’s own wake phrase—Dicio documents “Hey Dicio”—only after manual activation works.
What changes when you replace the default assistant
Android exposes a system-level Digital assistant app choice. The selected app can receive the assistant action launched by your phone’s supported gesture or button. This is different from installing an app and opening it occasionally: the default selection tells Android which assistant should handle that system entry point.

The setting does not guarantee identical behavior on every phone. Manufacturers and Android versions move or rename menus, and some devices customize the power-button or navigation gesture. If the path below is not visible, search Settings for digital assistant app, default assistant, or assistant app.

Why use Dicio as the community-made example
The Dicio project describes its software as “a free and open source voice assistant running on Android.” It says interpretation and responses can happen on the device when possible, with both speech and graphical feedback. Those are project claims, not an independent privacy audit or performance study, so treat them as an explanation of the project’s design rather than a guarantee for every command.

Dicio documents Vosk for speech-to-text and OpenWakeWord for wake-word support. Its default phrase is Hey Dicio. The project also lists skills for launching apps, calculations, calling contacts, timers, checking the current time, navigation, media controls, translation, reading notifications, controlling the flashlight, jokes, weather, lyrics, and web search. A skill list describes intended capabilities; it does not mean every skill is processed locally or works on every device.
The repository lists these languages: Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Language availability, recognition quality, and required model downloads can change, so check the current project documentation before relying on a particular language.
Before you install
Check the project’s current distribution and compatibility information
Use Dicio’s current project README or release page to find the legitimate installation source, latest release, and supported Android versions. The available project material does not establish a current distribution channel, latest release number, or minimum Android version, so those details should not be guessed. Avoid downloading an APK from an unattributed mirror when the project identifies an official source.

Allow enough storage for speech models
The Dicio README says its small Vosk speech models weigh approximately 50 MB. That is an approximate, project-published model figure—not a measured total for the installed app, cache, or every language. The README also says a model download starts automatically when needed to support language changes. Keep additional free space available for the app, downloaded language data, updates, and Android’s own storage overhead.
Decide what you want the replacement to do
- System gesture only: select Dicio as the default and invoke it manually.
- Hands-free activation: select the default first, then enable Dicio’s documented wake-word feature.
- Mostly local processing: prefer commands that Dicio identifies as on-device, and recognize that externally serviced skills still need connectivity or a service response.
Install and complete Dicio’s first-run setup
- Open the official project installation source. Follow the README or release instructions currently published by the Dicio project. Confirm that the package is intended for your Android version before installing.
- Install and launch the app. Android may warn when an app came from outside the Play Store. Continue only if you obtained the package from a source identified by the project and the package name matches its documentation.
- Complete the initial setup screens. Select an available language or speech model when prompted. If Dicio downloads a Vosk model automatically, leave the app open and connected until the download finishes.
- Grant microphone access when requested. Speech recognition and wake-word detection cannot listen without microphone permission. If you deny it, open Android’s app-permission settings for Dicio and allow the microphone, then restart the app if it does not recheck permissions.
- Review any additional permissions in context. Calling contacts, reading notifications, controlling media, or launching actions may require separate Android permissions or notification-access settings. Grant only permissions needed for the functions you intend to use.
- Run a spoken command inside Dicio. Try a low-risk test such as a calculation or asking for the current time. This separates an installation or microphone problem from an Android default-assistant problem.
The project material describes Dicio’s architecture and features but does not provide a verified, consumer-facing installation walkthrough. Screen labels and permission prompts can therefore differ from the sequence above.
Make the community assistant Android’s default
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Default apps.
- Tap Digital assistant app.
- Tap Default digital assistant app.
- Select Dicio (or the alternative assistant you installed) from the list.
- Read the confirmation prompt and approve the change if Android displays one.
That is Google’s documented common route, but it is not a universal layout. On some phones the digital-assistant control appears under a differently named default-apps page, a gesture settings page, or a system-navigation section. The Settings search field is usually faster than browsing every category.

Verify the system hand-off
Use the phone’s normal assistant gesture or button once. Depending on the device, that may be a corner swipe, a navigation-bar gesture, or a long press of a hardware button. Dicio should open or respond. If Google still appears, return to the Default digital assistant app screen and check which app is selected; do not assume that installing Dicio changed the setting.
Configure wake-word activation separately
Android’s default-app choice and an app’s hotword listener answer different questions. Google’s assistant documentation associates its own service with “Hey Google” and Voice Match. Selecting Dicio does not transfer that hotword service to Dicio, and there is no basis to promise that saying “Hey Google” will start it.
Use Dicio’s documented phrase
- Open Dicio after confirming that manual assistant activation works.
- Open the app’s settings for input and output methods.
- Enable its wake-word option, if the current build exposes it.
- Use the documented default phrase, Hey Dicio, in a quiet environment and wait for the app’s visual or spoken response.
Wake-word availability can depend on Android background restrictions, microphone permission, battery optimization, and the phone’s hardware. If manual activation works but the phrase does not, troubleshoot background listening rather than changing the default-assistant selection again.

Import a custom wake word
Dicio documents importing a custom .tflite wake-word model through Settings > Input and output methods > Import custom wake word. The file must be a compatible TensorFlow Lite model; changing a filename extension does not make an incompatible model usable. Keep the original model backed up so you can return to “Hey Dicio” if the custom phrase fails.
What Dicio can and cannot be assumed to replace
| Comparison axis | What Dicio’s project documents | What you still need to verify on your phone |
|---|---|---|
| Tasks and skills | App launching, calculations, contacts and calls, timers, time, navigation, media, translation, notifications, flashlight, jokes, weather, lyrics, and web search. | Whether a particular command, app, contact, media session, or external service works in your Android version and language. |
| Speech input | Vosk speech-to-text, with small models described as approximately 50 MB. | Which model is downloaded, how much storage it consumes in practice, and recognition quality in your environment. |
| Wake words | OpenWakeWord support, default phrase “Hey Dicio,” and custom .tflite import. |
Whether background listening remains active under your battery and permission policies. |
| Processing location | On-device interpretation and responses when possible, according to the project. | Which individual skills contact external services and what connectivity they require. |
| Languages | Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Ukrainian are listed by the repository. | Current model availability and behavior after changing languages. |
| Compatibility | Android voice-assistant software. | Current minimum Android version, release support, manufacturer restrictions, and installation channel. |
This is a capability comparison, not a claim of feature parity with Google Assistant or Gemini. Dicio’s project publishes a skill set; it does not establish equal coverage, accuracy, account integration, or response speed.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
Dicio is not listed under Digital assistant app
- Launch Dicio once and finish its first-run setup; Android may not list an app that has not initialized its assistant service.
- Confirm that the installed package is a build that declares Android assistant support, not an unrelated fork or damaged install.
- Restart the phone, then search Settings again for digital assistant app.
- Check the project’s current compatibility notes. The available documentation does not establish a universal minimum Android version.
The gesture still opens Google’s assistant
- Recheck Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app.
- Test the gesture after changing the selection rather than testing an old notification or shortcut.
- Look for a separate navigation or power-button setting. A manufacturer may assign that gesture independently, so changing the default assistant may not change every button action.
Dicio opens but cannot hear you
- Open Android’s permission page for Dicio and allow microphone access.
- Check whether another app is using the microphone, and close that app for the test.
- Verify that the selected speech language has a downloaded model and that the approximate model download completed.
- Try a manual in-app command before testing the wake word; this identifies microphone or speech-to-text problems without involving background listening.
“Hey Dicio” does nothing
- Confirm that wake-word support is enabled in Dicio’s input and output settings.
- Remove battery restrictions for Dicio if your phone suspends background activity, while understanding that menu names differ by manufacturer.
- Check microphone permission and test in a quiet room.
- Return to the default “Hey Dicio” model before diagnosing a custom
.tflitemodel.
A skill gives no result
Separate local functions from service-dependent ones. A calculation or flashlight command may be a useful offline test, while weather, web search, lyrics, navigation, or translation can depend on network access, an external provider, account state, or language support. The project does not claim that every listed skill runs offline.
Best Value
Change back to Google or remove the replacement
- Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app, or find the equivalent screen with Settings search.
- Select Google, another listed assistant, or None.
- Invoke the system gesture to confirm the new selection.
- If a power-button action or navigation gesture was customized separately, restore that control in its own settings page.
- Only after changing the default should you uninstall Dicio or revoke its microphone and notification permissions.
Choosing None removes the assistant destination from Android’s default setting; it does not necessarily uninstall an app or erase its downloaded speech model. Uninstalling the app is a separate Android action.
Is this a consumer setup or a developer experiment?
Android Open Source Project documentation includes a VoiceInteractionService sample that demonstrates how the platform selects a digital assistant. Its instructions involve building the platform sample, remounting or using root access, pushing a privileged app and permission XML into a system image, rebooting, and granting microphone access. That workflow is for platform development and testing. It is not a consumer installation method for Dicio and should not be used as a shortcut around the normal app setup.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Use Dicio if you want an open-source Android assistant project with documented on-device processing where possible and a selectable default-assistant entry point.
- Set expectations around scope: the project lists skills, not complete parity with Google’s assistant ecosystem.
- Install from the project’s identified current source and verify release and Android-version compatibility before sideloading anything.
- Allow microphone access only when you want speech input; review notification, contact, call, and other permissions according to the skills you enable.
- Test the system gesture first, then test “Hey Dicio,” because default selection and wake-word activation fail independently.
- Keep storage available for speech models; the project describes small Vosk models as approximately 50 MB, not as a guaranteed total installation size.
