How to Set Up a Church YouTube Stream with OBS and a Sermon Playlist

Schedule the service in YouTube Studio, connect OBS to that scheduled event, and add the archived sermon to a playlist after the broadcast. These are separate tasks: OBS sends the church’s camera and audio feed, the scheduled event controls the public broadcast, and the playlist organizes the finished video. Before service day, confirm the channel can livestream and decide who will operate YouTube Studio.

Before you set up the stream

YouTube’s getting-started guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check eligibility before planning the first service broadcast; see YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

  • Make sure the volunteer who will operate the broadcast can access the church channel and the scheduled event in YouTube Studio.
  • Identify how the church’s camera video and audio reach the computer running OBS. The right connection depends on the equipment already installed; a capture card is not automatically required.
  • Choose who will monitor YouTube Studio during the service and whether that person will manually start the public broadcast or rely on the event’s configured auto-start behavior.

Schedule the service in YouTube Studio

  1. Sign in to the church’s YouTube account and open Create, then Go Live.
  2. Open the Manage tab and choose Schedule Stream. Create a new event or reuse settings from a previous stream.
  3. Enter the service title, date and time, visibility, description, and any other event details appropriate for the church. Review the event before saving.
  4. Copy the scheduled event’s watch-page link and share it with the congregation in advance. YouTube scheduling allows viewers to visit the page and set a reminder; the link is for viewers, not the stream key.

YouTube may change Studio labels or permissions. If a menu differs, use the current YouTube Studio interface and its live-streaming help as the authority rather than relying on an old screenshot or volunteer checklist.

Connect OBS to the scheduled event

  1. Get the event’s connection details. In the YouTube live setup for the scheduled stream, find the stream URL and stream key, or use the YouTube service integration available in OBS. A stream key is a credential: keep it private, do not place it in a public checklist or screenshot, and do not share it with viewers.
  2. Set the OBS connection. In OBS, select the appropriate YouTube service, or enter YouTube’s server URL and the event’s stream key in the streaming settings. Use the event-specific details and check that OBS is connected to the intended channel.
  3. Check the production feed. Select the correct OBS scene and confirm that the camera image and audio source are the ones intended for the service. The signal chain varies by church, so verify it with the actual camera, computer, and audio setup.
  4. Test before the service. Start OBS early enough to confirm that YouTube is receiving the encoder output for the scheduled event. Check that the picture is framed correctly and that spoken audio is intelligible. Keep a volunteer available to monitor both OBS and Studio.
  5. Make the scheduled event live. Sending output from OBS and making the event public may be separate actions. Check whether auto-start is enabled for that event or whether the operator must press Go Live in YouTube Studio. Do not assume that starting the encoder alone has made the service public. The OBS Project streaming guide explains the encoder-side distinction; follow YouTube Studio’s current controls for the event.
  6. End and verify. Use the controls that match the event configuration to end the broadcast. Then confirm that the resulting video appears in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the archive rather than assuming the video is available or correctly saved.

Add the archived sermon to a playlist

A scheduled event and a playlist do different jobs: scheduling sets up a broadcast, while a playlist collects videos. The official playlist instructions do not establish that future live streams automatically become playlist members, so check the archive and add each sermon deliberately.

  1. After the sermon video is available, open its YouTube watch page while signed in to the church account.
  2. Select Save, then Create new playlist.
  3. Give the playlist a clear name, such as “Sunday Sermons” or “Church Service Archive,” and choose its visibility intentionally.
  4. Save the playlist, then verify that the sermon appears in it. For later services, use Save on each archived video and select the existing playlist.

See YouTube’s playlist instructions for the current desktop steps.

Plan a volunteer-friendly service workflow

For church use, keep the checklist tied to the room and equipment rather than copying a universal camera or OBS recipe. The Church of England’s beginner guide to live streaming is relevant to scheduling and sharing a service link.

  • Confirm camera framing, intelligible audio, and a stable network connection before the congregation arrives.
  • Name one volunteer to watch the scheduled event in Studio and know whether manual Go Live is required.
  • Share the scheduled watch-page link ahead of time, and keep the stream key out of public materials.
  • After the service, verify both the archived video and its playlist membership.

When a capture card may be needed

Consider a USB HDMI capture card only if the church needs to bring an HDMI camera output into the OBS computer. First check the camera’s output, the computer’s available inputs, and the resolution and frame rate the church intends to use. Some devices connect directly by USB, and a church may already have a compatible capture path. No particular make or model is established as compatible without checking the actual equipment.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • The channel cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether a live-streaming restriction has applied within the previous 90 days. Resolve eligibility before the service rather than troubleshooting OBS first.
  • YouTube does not receive OBS output: Confirm OBS is using the intended YouTube service or the scheduled event’s server URL and stream key. Recheck the selected channel and keep the key private when correcting the setup.
  • OBS is sending video, but viewers cannot watch the scheduled event: Check the event in YouTube Studio. The encoder feed may be running while the event still needs the operator to press Go Live; verify the event’s auto-start configuration and current controls.
  • The picture or sound is wrong: Check the active OBS scene, camera feed, and audio source, then trace how the installed camera and audio system connect to the OBS computer. There is no single hardware or scene configuration that fits every church.
  • The sermon is missing from the playlist: Find the archived video in Studio, open its watch page, and add it using Save. A scheduled stream does not by itself establish playlist membership.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live; the stream runs from the cloud, so a computer, OBS, and a home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, so it is an alternative for a prerecorded sermon or continuous channel stream, not a replacement for sending a live church camera feed.
