You can give a child a useful first smartphone without starting them on social media: set up their own supervised account, leave social apps off, limit app and web access, and agree on the rules before the phone is handed over. The controls differ between iPhone and Android, and none can guarantee a child will never encounter social content, so pair settings with regular, calm conversations.
Agree on the phone’s purpose and ground rules
Start by deciding what the phone is for: reaching caregivers, coordinating travel, school needs, or another agreed use. Make a short family phone agreement before setup, so the child knows what the phone can do and what to do when something feels wrong.

- Set expectations for where and when the phone can be used, including meals, homework, and bedtime.
- Choose a predictable overnight charging place; many families keep phones out of bedrooms at night.
- Agree that a parent or guardian must approve downloads and new accounts.
- Talk about keeping personal details, photos, and location private, and about asking for help if someone sends an upsetting message or asks to move to another app.
- Decide together how you will handle a broken rule and when you will revisit the agreement.
A practical starting point is no phone at meals or during homework, a shared charging spot at night, and notifications limited to useful contacts. Those are household choices, not universal clinical rules. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends screen-free places and times, reviewing notifications and content, and revisiting the family plan as children mature. See the AAP Family Media Plan and Common Sense Media’s family media agreement.
Use the child’s own account, not an adult’s
A child’s own account lets the family apply age-appropriate supervision without sharing an adult’s messages, purchases, or personal data. The setup path depends on the phone platform and the family’s existing devices.

iPhone: Family Sharing and Screen Time
Add or create the child’s Apple Account in the family’s Apple Family Sharing group, then manage parental controls and Screen Time from a parent or guardian account where supported. Apple recommends that each family member use their own Apple Account rather than sharing one. Follow Apple’s current setup instructions, since options and defaults can vary with the child’s age, iOS version, and region.
Android: Google Family Link
Use Google Family Link to create or supervise the child’s Google Account and supervise an eligible Android phone. The parent can review available app approvals and time limits for that device. Family Link does not supervise an iPhone or iPad as the child’s device; availability and features also depend on country and device.
If your household uses both platforms, choose the controls supported by the child’s actual phone rather than assuming one family-management app covers every device. For the latest requirements and options, check Apple’s and Google’s support pages while setting up.

Configure access before adding everyday apps
Keep the first app list small. Set up essential contacts and functions first, then add other apps only when you and your child have discussed why they are needed.
On iPhone
In Screen Time, review app and website access, content restrictions, communication contacts, allowed times, and category or app time allowances. Apple’s Communication Safety can provide on-device guidance around detected sensitive images. It is one safeguard, not a guarantee that every risky image or interaction will be detected.
On Android
In Family Link, review the app supervision and time-limit options available for the child’s specific phone. Settings can differ by device and manufacturer, and account supervision does not mean every web activity is controlled. Check Google’s current instructions to understand the features supported on that account and phone.

Review the less obvious access points
Do not focus only on app icons. Review browser and website access, downloads, notifications, location sharing, camera and microphone permissions, and in-app purchases as appropriate for the child. Approvals and restrictions can reduce access to new apps, but exact controls vary by phone, software, account age, and region. Common Sense Media’s first-phone setup guide and AAP guidance offer practical prompts for reviewing controls and available features.
Make “no social media for now” specific
Leave social media apps off the phone and make the rule clear: no social media accounts or apps for now, and ask before installing communication, video, or community apps. Explain that a service can sometimes be reached through a website even when its app is not installed, so browser access belongs in the family’s review too.
The AAP notes that most platforms set 13 as a minimum signup age and advises caution for children younger than 13. That describes common platform policies; it is not a universal legal threshold, and policies are not identical across services. Check the current terms of any specific service rather than treating 13 as a blanket rule.

Tell the child to come to a trusted adult if someone asks for private information, photos, or location, or pressures them to switch to another app. App blocks and download approval are guardrails, not foolproof barriers. A low-pressure routine for talking about messages and online experiences matters alongside the settings.
Review the setup as the child gains experience
Schedule a brief check-in regularly. Ask what is useful, what feels uncomfortable, what apps or features the child wants, and whether the household rules still fit. Expand privileges gradually when the child follows agreements and shows sound judgment; revise settings when the child’s needs or circumstances change.

Consider a simpler device if calls are the main need
If the main reason for a device is calling or basic contact, a basic phone or smartwatch may meet that need with less internet access. It is an option, not a requirement; weigh it against the practical features your family needs.
If you choose a smartphone, a protective case is a sensible physical safeguard. Match the case to the exact phone model; no particular case is implied or tested here.
