What a ChatGPT Dot is—and what “connect it to your account” means
A ChatGPT Dot is a software agent that runs inside ChatGPT. OpenAI describes it as always on and gives it a cloud computer for carrying out work. There is no Dot handset, box, accessory, repair part, or physical pairing process involved in this setup.

“Connect it to your ChatGPT account” means creating the Dot while you are signed in to the ChatGPT account and workspace that should own it. If you later open ChatGPT on another device, sign in to that same OpenAI account using the same sign-in method. The email shown on a receipt can differ from the address used to sign in, so use the credentials that actually open the intended ChatGPT account.
A Dot can optionally use connected apps, messaging channels, or a local computer. Those capabilities are separate approvals; creating the Dot alone does not automatically grant local-computer access or every app permission.

Who can use Dots
Availability is controlled by plan, age, geography, workspace settings, and a staged rollout. OpenAI’s current help guidance describes the following access pattern, but eligibility can change as the feature rolls out:

Even an otherwise eligible account may not show Dots immediately. OpenAI says rollout can take several days. Mobile creation and creation from a mobile browser are not currently supported, so begin on a desktop computer.
Before you start
- Use a desktop computer with either the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser.
- Have the correct ChatGPT account and, if applicable, the correct work or school workspace selected.
- Know how that account signs in (for example, the same identity-provider button or password method used previously).
- If you plan to connect an app, be able to sign in to the separate account that contains the information the Dot needs.
- If you plan to authorize a local computer, that computer must remain online with the ChatGPT desktop app open while access is needed.
You do not need a separate Dot device or special hardware. A computer or phone may be useful for ordinary ChatGPT access, but the Dot itself is a software feature.

How to set up your ChatGPT Dot
- Open ChatGPT on a desktop. Launch the ChatGPT desktop app, or open ChatGPT in a desktop browser. Do not start from the mobile app or mobile web if you are trying to create the Dot.
- Sign in to the intended account. Confirm the account shown in ChatGPT is the one that should own the Dot. In a team, school, or company account, switch to the workspace where you want the agent created.
- Open Dots. Select the Dots entry if it appears in the interface. You can also go directly to
chatgpt.com/dots. - Check eligibility if Dots is absent. Verify the account, workspace, plan, age requirement, and region. An eligible account can still be waiting for the staged rollout, so allow for several days before concluding that setup is unavailable.
- Complete onboarding. Follow the prompts to create the Dot and choose a name. The default handle is
@yourname-dot. If you name the agent, its handle changes to@yourname-agentname. - Review the Dot profile. After creation, inspect the available settings, connected services, memory behavior, computer controls, and action-approval rules before asking it to perform consequential work.
Creating the Dot establishes it in that account and workspace. It does not pair a physical object, copy the Dot to another account, or automatically authorize every service listed in the profile.
How to connect and manage apps
App connections are configured from the Dot’s profile. The exact list can differ by plan, region, account type, workspace policy, and the ChatGPT surface you are using.
- Open the Dot profile and view the available apps or connected services.
- Select the app you want to use.
- Read the permissions request carefully. Check whether it asks only to read information or also to create, edit, send, delete, or otherwise act on your behalf.
- Sign in to the app account that contains the data the Dot needs.
- Approve only the requested access you are comfortable granting, then return to the Dot profile and confirm that the connection shows as active.
App permissions are shared across Dots, ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex within the permissions you granted. Disconnecting an app stops the connection going forward, but it does not erase information the Dot already obtained from that service. If an authorization expires or an app stops working, verify that the supported app or plugin is installed, confirm that the correct app account is connected, inspect whether its permissions include the action you need, and reconnect it if necessary.
Connect only the account that contains the intended information. For example, if you have personal and company accounts for the same service, choosing the wrong one can make the Dot appear to be missing data even though authorization succeeded. Switching accounts generally requires disconnecting the existing authorization and completing the sign-in flow again; do not grant a broader permission scope simply to compensate for a wrong account.

How to connect messaging channels
Where the option is offered, messaging channels are enabled from the ChatGPT desktop app and the Dot’s settings. OpenAI’s guide specifically describes Slack and texting as possible connections, but availability is conditional rather than universal.
Slack and other offered channels
Choose the messaging service shown in your Dot profile, inspect the requested account and permissions, and complete that service’s authorization flow. A workspace administrator or regional policy can prevent the option from appearing.
Texting
OpenAI describes texting as a limited Pro beta in the United States. It is not available to Business or Enterprise workspaces and may not be enabled for every Pro user. Messaging and data charges may apply. Read the enablement notice, terms, and privacy policy before confirming, and do not assume that an absent texting option indicates a setup error.
How to let a Dot use your local computer
A Dot normally uses its cloud computer. Local-computer access is optional and starts turned off. Connecting a computer to Codex or enabling Work Sync does not grant this permission.
- On the computer you want the Dot to use, open the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Open the Dot profile and find the Computers section.
- Select Allow access.
- Read the confirmation describing what local access permits.
- Confirm again to authorize that computer.
- Keep the computer online and leave ChatGPT open while the Dot needs access.
To stop local access, return to the same computer control and revoke permission. If the Dot cannot reach the computer, check all three conditions: access was explicitly allowed in the desktop app on that computer, the computer is online, and ChatGPT remains open.
Cloud computer versus local-computer access

These are separate operating environments. A Dot can be created and used without ever seeing your local files or desktop. Conversely, authorizing one computer does not authorize every computer you own. Treat each authorization as a deliberate, per-computer decision and revoke it when the machine should no longer be reachable.
How memory, conversations, and automation work
A Dot can receive ChatGPT memories and recent conversation context. Conversations with the Dot can also contribute to ChatGPT memory. Turning Memory off prevents further sharing, but it does not delete information the Dot already received.

Dots provide controls for pausing the agent and for deciding how actions are approved. Depending on the control exposed in your account, you can require an action to be:
- performed automatically;
- performed only after you pre-approve it;
- held until the Dot asks you;
- handed back to you for completion.
Use stricter approval for actions involving messages, files, purchases, account changes, or other difficult-to-reverse results. OpenAI advises reviewing the Dot’s work and checking important details rather than treating an automated result as self-verifying.
A practical first test is a reversible request that uses no sensitive connection. Watch whether the Dot asks for approval at the point you expect, then inspect the result in the original app or account. This confirms both the connection and the action policy without immediately giving the agent authority over an irreversible task.
Requirements, equipment, and possible charges
The setup requires supported desktop access to ChatGPT, an eligible account or workspace, and the correct sign-in method. There is no Dot-specific handset, accessory, replacement part, consumable, or printed manual identified for this feature. You therefore should not buy hardware merely to create a Dot.
The official setup guidance does not specify a separate Dot purchase price. Costs can still arise from an optional service: OpenAI specifically warns that texting may involve messaging and data charges. Check the notice shown during enablement and any applicable carrier or service terms. App connections may also be limited by plan or workspace policy, but an absent app should not be treated as a prompt to upgrade without first checking account, region, and administrator settings.

Common setup pitfalls
- Starting on mobile: creation from the mobile app or mobile web is not currently supported. Use desktop web or the desktop app.
- Using the receipt address: billing and sign-in addresses can differ. Use the identity and sign-in method that actually open the intended ChatGPT account.
- Forgetting the active workspace: a Dot created in one workspace is not automatically created in another. Check the workspace switcher before onboarding.
- Expecting immediate rollout: eligible accounts may wait several days while access is staged.
- Assuming apps are universal: app lists and permissions vary by plan, region, account, workspace, and interface.
- Confusing integrations: Codex computer connections and Work Sync do not grant Dot access to a local computer.
- Disconnecting and expecting deletion: removing an app connection does not erase information the Dot already obtained. Use Reset for the Dot data covered by its deletion notice.
- Leaving approvals too broad: start with ask-before-action or handoff controls for messages, files, purchases, and account changes.
How to pause or permanently reset a Dot
Pause
Use the pause control in the Dot profile when you need to stop its activity temporarily. Pausing is a control on the agent’s operation; it is different from deleting its stored information.
Reset
Use Reset in the Dot profile when you want to delete the Dot’s conversations, saved memories, and scheduled tasks. Read the deletion notice and confirm only after checking that you no longer need those items. Reset is broader than disconnecting an app: disconnecting removes an app connection, while reset removes the Dot data identified in the notice.

Why can’t I find Dots?
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the surface. Use the desktop app or desktop web, then open
chatgpt.com/dots. Mobile creation is not currently supported. - Confirm the account. Sign out if necessary and sign back in with the account and sign-in method that own the intended ChatGPT access. A billing or receipt email is not necessarily the login identity.
- Confirm the workspace. In a multi-workspace account, switch to the workspace where Dots should be created. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare access may require an administrator to enable the beta.
- Check plan, age, and region. Pro access is described for users over 18 outside the EEA, Switzerland, and UK; Business Premium access is limited to supported regions; other workspace plans have the conditions listed earlier.
- Allow for rollout delay. OpenAI says an eligible account may take several days to receive the feature.
- Reload and check again. After correcting the account or workspace, reopen the desktop app or browser and revisit the Dots page.
If an app connection fails after Dots becomes available, troubleshoot that connection separately: verify the supported app or plugin, the connected account, and the granted permission scope, then reconnect an expired authorization. A missing Dots menu and a broken app authorization are different problems.
Why a Dot cannot use my computer
- Local access was never approved: open the desktop app on that computer and select Allow access in the Dot profile under Computers.
- The computer is offline: reconnect it to the internet and keep it powered on.
- ChatGPT is closed: reopen the desktop app and leave it running while access is required.
- A different computer was authorized: permissions are granted per computer; approve the intended machine from its own desktop app.
- You assumed another integration was enough: Codex computer connections and Work Sync do not themselves authorize Dot local access.
Account access on another device
After creation, access ChatGPT from another device by signing in to the same OpenAI account that owns the Dot and using the same sign-in method. If Dots does not appear there, first check that you did not enter a different account or workspace. The Dot’s creation itself still has to be performed on supported desktop software.
Privacy and permission checklist
- Review every app permission before approval, especially permissions that allow sending, editing, deleting, or other external actions.
- Remember that app permissions can apply across Dots, ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex within the scope you granted.

What to expect after setup
Your Dot should appear under the account and workspace in which you created it, with the name and handle selected during onboarding. Its cloud computer is available as part of the software service; local-device control remains off until you explicitly authorize a computer. Apps, messaging, memory, and scheduled actions each have their own settings and may be limited by your plan, region, workspace, or rollout status.
The safest first run is a small, reversible task. Confirm which account, app, files, and computer the Dot is using, inspect the permissions it requests, and keep approval set to ask before consequential actions. That approach lets you verify the connection without granting broader access than the job requires.
