How to Set Up a Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar for Better TV and Movie Sound

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

For the best results, connect the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar to your television’s HDMI eARC port with the included HDMI cable, finish setup in the Bose app, and run CustomTune with the soundbar in its final position. Use ARC only when eARC is unavailable, and use optical only when the TV has neither ARC nor eARC. Keep the soundbar’s front and top clear so its forward- and upward-firing drivers can work properly.

The soundbar can decode Dolby Atmos by itself. A compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer adds low-frequency impact, while a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers adds physical surround coverage; neither accessory is required for the bar to operate.

What you need before starting

Gather the soundbar, its power cable, the included HDMI cable, a television with an available HDMI eARC or ARC port, and a phone or tablet running the Bose app. Have your home-network details available because the app guides network and device configuration. Place the soundbar where it will remain during calibration, with its front and top unobstructed.

  • Preferred TV connection: HDMI eARC.
  • Supported fallback: HDMI ARC.
  • Last-resort fallback: optical audio when the television has no ARC/eARC connection.
  • Optional expansion: a compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer and/or a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers.

Do not buy accessories just to make the soundbar decode Atmos. Bose says the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar supports Dolby Atmos playback as a standalone soundbar, using upward-firing height speakers and PhaseGuide speakers to create virtual speaker positions.

Connect the soundbar to the correct TV port

  1. Find the television’s labeled ARC/eARC socket. Look at the labels beside every HDMI port or consult the television manual. The correct port is normally marked HDMI eARC or HDMI ARC; an ordinary HDMI input is not the same connection.
  2. Connect the included HDMI cable. Plug one end into the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the other into the soundbar’s HDMI eARC connection. The eARC label on the television is the preferred match when available.
  3. Connect power and turn on the TV and soundbar. Give the television time to detect the audio device before changing additional settings.
  4. Set the television’s audio output to the ARC/eARC connection. Menu names and the available choices differ by TV make, model, region and firmware. Use the TV manual if you cannot find the audio-output control.
  5. Use optical only if necessary. If the TV has no ARC or eARC port, Bose identifies optical as the fallback connection. You will need an optical cable; the soundbar’s included HDMI cable is intended for the HDMI connection.

eARC is preferable because ARC does not carry lossless formats, and Dolby audio support over ARC varies by television model. A TV may therefore offer fewer audio-format choices over ARC than over eARC. The exact output options must be verified in the television’s own documentation.

eARC, ARC and optical: what changes

Connection When to use it What to expect
HDMI eARC The TV has an eARC-labeled HDMI port Preferred connection for the soundbar and the broadest format capability identified by Bose.
HDMI ARC The TV has ARC but not eARC Works with the soundbar, but ARC does not support lossless formats and Dolby support depends on the TV make and model.
Optical The TV has neither ARC nor eARC Bose lists it as a fallback. Confirm available formats and output behavior in the TV manual.

There is no universal TV menu path for enabling ARC, eARC, CEC or a particular Dolby option. Manufacturers use different labels, and some sets expose different controls depending on the selected input or firmware. Treat the labels in your TV manual as authoritative rather than applying a setting name from another brand.

Finish setup in the Bose app

  1. Open the Bose app on your phone or tablet. Follow the prompts to add the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar.
  2. Complete network configuration. Enter the requested network information and allow the app to finish registering the device.
  3. Confirm the TV connection when prompted. The app’s setup flow checks that the soundbar is connected to the television and directs you to correct the cable or TV output if it is not.
  4. Complete any device updates or permission requests shown by the app. The exact screens can change, so follow the current prompts rather than relying on an older walkthrough.
  5. Play TV audio before calibrating. This verifies that the basic HDMI or optical path works before you spend time tuning the room.

Bose’s support materials provide setup and fine-tuning guidance for this model. If the app cannot find the soundbar, keep the phone near the bar, confirm that the bar has power, and work through the app’s connection checks before changing TV settings at random.

Run CustomTune in the room where you watch

CustomTune is the soundbar’s room-calibration process. Bose describes it as using the phone’s microphone as a reference and basing the process on ADAPTiQ technology. Run it after the soundbar is connected, positioned and playing TV audio.

  1. Start CustomTune from the Bose app’s setup or soundbar controls.
  2. Follow the app’s instructions for holding and positioning the phone. The phone microphone is the measurement reference, so do not cover it or substitute another device unless the app explicitly allows it.
  3. Let the calibration finish without moving the soundbar. Keep the room in its normal viewing arrangement: furniture, curtains and other large objects should be where they usually are.
  4. Listen to familiar TV dialogue and a movie scene after calibration. If you later move the soundbar or make a major room change, run CustomTune again.

If you add a compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer after the initial calibration, Bose recommends running CustomTune again. The second pass lets the system account for the new bass source instead of retaining a profile made for the soundbar alone.

Place the soundbar so its drivers can project sound

The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar uses forward- and upward-projecting drivers. Keep the entire front grille and the top surface clear of shelves, décor, fabric and other obstructions. A blocked top can interfere with the upward-firing height channel used for Atmos effects, while a blocked front can interfere with direct dialogue and other main channels.

  • Do not mount the soundbar above the TV; Bose advises against that placement.
  • Do not cover the top with a soundbar shelf, cloth or decorative panel.
  • Do not place objects directly in front of the grille.
  • Complete CustomTune only after choosing the final location.

Bose’s current instructions do not establish a universal distance from the TV, a required shelf height or a single wall-mounting configuration. Follow the placement limits in Bose’s current instructions and prioritize a clear acoustic path over a fixed measurement.

Choose the right configuration for your room

The soundbar works as a complete front-stage system on its own. Add components only when you want a specific change in the sound field.

Configuration What it provides Best fit Additional cost or requirement
Soundbar alone TV and movie playback with Dolby Atmos decoding from the bar’s own drivers. Rooms where simple installation and a clean footprint matter, or viewers who want height effects without rear speakers. No accessory required; price not stated in the available product information.
Soundbar + Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer More dedicated low-frequency output alongside the soundbar. Movie viewers who want stronger bass impact but do not need speakers behind or beside the seating position. Requires the compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer; Bose recommends rerunning CustomTune after adding it. Price not stated.
Soundbar + Subwoofer + pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers Additional bass plus physical surround speakers for a more enveloping presentation. Rooms with suitable locations for two surround speakers and viewers who want sound from behind or to the sides. Requires a compatible subwoofer and a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers. Price and placement measurements are not stated.

Bose describes the full Lifestyle Collection as supporting up to 7.1.4-channel audio when paired with compatible surround speakers and subwoofers. That is a manufacturer-described system capability, not an independent listening or room-measurement result. The soundbar by itself should not be described as producing discrete rear-speaker coverage.

Adding the compatible subwoofer

A subwoofer is optional. If your priority is deeper, more physical bass for explosions, music scores and other low-frequency effects, the compatible model named by Bose is the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer.

  1. Position the subwoofer according to Bose’s current placement guidance and connect it using the method specified in the app or product instructions.
  2. Add it to the existing soundbar system through the Bose app.
  3. Play a short TV or movie scene to verify that the subwoofer is recognized.
  4. Run CustomTune again. Bose specifically recommends recalibration after the compatible subwoofer is added.

Do not assume that any older Bose subwoofer will work. Confirm the exact model in the current compatibility information before purchasing or attempting to pair it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding surround speakers

For physical surround coverage, Bose identifies a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers as the compatible option for this soundbar system. A pair is the relevant configuration; adding only one speaker does not create a conventional left-and-right surround field.

Older Bose Surround Speakers and Bose Surround Speakers 700 are not compatible with the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. This is a model-compatibility limitation, not a recommendation to force-pair them through a different app or connection.

  1. Place the two Lifestyle Ultra Speakers where your room and Bose’s instructions allow, normally on opposite sides of the listening area.
  2. Add them through the Bose app’s device or accessory setup.
  3. Check that both speakers appear in the same system before starting playback.
  4. Play a movie scene with ambient effects and adjust placement if one side is blocked or noticeably closer to the seating position.

The available product information does not specify a universal distance, height or angle for every room. Use the current Bose placement guidance and keep both speakers clear of large obstructions.

How to get the best TV and movie playback

Use eARC whenever the TV supports it

eARC gives the system the preferred connection path. If you are using ARC, understand that the TV may limit lossless or Dolby formats even though the soundbar itself can decode Atmos. A missing format option can therefore be a TV-connection limitation rather than a fault in the soundbar.

Let the TV send audio to the soundbar

After connecting the HDMI cable, select the TV’s ARC/eARC audio output. If the set continues using its internal speakers, check the TV manual for the audio-output selector and any HDMI-control or CEC requirement. CEC labels and behavior vary, so do not assume that a setting from one television applies to another.

Calibrate after physical changes

CustomTune describes the room the way it existed during calibration. Run it again after adding the compatible subwoofer, moving the soundbar, or making a substantial change to the viewing area.

Preserve a clear line from the bar

Leave the front and top unobstructed for dialogue, direct effects and upward-firing Atmos height information. Cosmetic panels that look acoustically transparent can still interfere with the top drivers, so remove them while troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No sound from the soundbar

  1. Check that the HDMI cable is plugged into the TV port labeled ARC or eARC, not a standard HDMI input.
  2. Open the TV’s audio-output settings and select ARC/eARC or the connected external audio system.
  3. Power-cycle the TV and soundbar, then check the app’s connection status.
  4. Consult the TV manual for its exact ARC, eARC and CEC requirements. The available controls differ by model.

Sound works, but Atmos or another format is unavailable

First identify whether the TV is using ARC instead of eARC. Bose states that ARC does not support lossless formats and that Dolby support varies by TV make and model. Verify the TV’s supported output formats in its documentation before treating the limitation as a soundbar failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app cannot complete setup

Confirm that the soundbar has power, keep the phone near it, and repeat the app’s network and device-discovery prompts. If the app requests a network connection, use the network information required by your home router. Do not rely on screenshots from an older app version because labels and screen order can change.

Bass changed after adding the subwoofer

Run CustomTune again after the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer is added. Bose recommends this recalibration so the system can account for the additional bass source.

Surround speakers will not pair

Verify the exact models. Bose identifies Lifestyle Ultra Speakers as the compatible surround option and states that older Bose Surround Speakers and Bose Surround Speakers 700 are not compatible. Recheck that you are adding a pair of the supported model through the current app flow.

The sound seems muffled or height effects are weak

Inspect the soundbar’s top and front for obstructions and remove anything covering the drivers. Confirm that the bar is not mounted above the TV, then run CustomTune again if its position has changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the soundbar can—and cannot—do alone

The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar can decode Dolby Atmos without a subwoofer or surround speakers. Its upward-firing height speakers and PhaseGuide processing are intended to create a wider, more three-dimensional presentation from the bar itself. That does not mean the bar physically places speakers behind the listener. For actual rear or side coverage, add the compatible pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers.

Likewise, a subwoofer is an expansion for bass impact, not a prerequisite for TV sound, app setup or Atmos decoding. The three configurations differ mainly in low-frequency authority, physical surround coverage, room-placement demands and accessory cost. Current prices and retailer availability were not established here, so check the exact model and local listing before buying.

A reliable setup sequence

  1. Put the soundbar in its final location with the front and top clear.
  2. Connect the included HDMI cable from the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar. Use ARC if eARC is unavailable.
  3. Choose the TV’s ARC/eARC audio output and confirm that sound comes from the bar.
  4. Use optical only when the TV has no ARC/eARC port.
  5. Complete network and device setup in the Bose app.
  6. Run CustomTune with the phone microphone as instructed.
  7. Add a Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer or a pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers only if you need stronger bass or physical surround coverage.
  8. Run CustomTune again after adding the subwoofer or changing the soundbar’s position.
