To make a successful first print on a Bambu Lab A2L, identify whether you have the standard printer or the Combo package, assemble it with the A2L-specific quick-start guide, power it on and allow initialization calibration to finish, check and align the build plate, load compatible filament, choose a model, confirm the printer, filament and plate profiles, then start the job. The standard package uses the external spool holder; AMS Lite is supplied with the Combo package. Do not skip the model-specific assembly instructions or assume that every A2L box contains the same accessories.

Start by identifying your A2L package

Bambu Lab sells the A2L in package variants whose contents and filament-loading steps differ. Before removing parts from the box, check the order confirmation, carton labels and the package-contents list in the A2L support hub. Regional bundles can vary, so use the contents listed for your exact purchase rather than a third-party unboxing list.

A2L Combo Printer assembly plus the supplied AMS Lite, with the option to load filament through AMS Lite or the external spool holder. Every region or retailer bundle has identical accessories.

The manufacturer’s product information also identifies PLA as a suitable material and lists Bambu Studio as the slicer with printer and filament profiles. Those are useful starting points, but the profile for your selected model and installed plate remains the authority for the actual print.

Use the A2L-specific assembly instructions

Physical assembly is the one part of this process where guessing from a similar printer is most likely to cause damage. Bambu Lab lists an A2L quick-start guide and an A2L unboxing guide in its support resources. The unboxing material is organized around removing packaging, assembling the A2L, installing the external spool holder and powering on for initialization. Follow the guide that matches your package and regional hardware.

The quick-start PDF extract specifically warns that the build plate must be oriented and aligned with the heatbed; an incorrectly positioned plate can scratch the touchscreen. It also advises washing a plate that has been touched by hand with hot water and detergent. For the full plate procedure, fastener locations, transport restraints, cable routing and included tools, use the complete guide rather than a remembered procedure from another model. The PDF is available at this Bambu Lab link. Bambu Lab also lists an official unboxing video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43UNZvhyqJk.

  • Keep the printer on a rigid, level surface with enough clearance to open the machine and handle the plate.
  • Remove every shipping piece specified by the A2L guide before homing or calibration.
  • Keep screws, protective films and packaging until the first print is complete in case a part must be rechecked.
  • Do not force a connector, axis or panel that does not move as shown in the guide; stop and consult the model-specific instructions.

Prepare the machine before switching it on

  1. Complete the mechanical assembly. Use the A2L quick-start guide for the exact sequence, including the external spool holder. If you have the Combo, install and connect AMS Lite only as shown for that package.
  2. Inspect the motion area. Confirm that no foam, tie, film or loose packing material remains where the bed, toolhead or other moving parts travel.
  3. Install the build plate in the correct orientation. Align it with the heatbed as the guide illustrates. A plate that is skewed, reversed or not fully seated can interfere with the machine and may scratch the display.
  4. Clean a handled plate. Finger oils can reduce adhesion. If the surface has been touched, wash it with hot water and detergent, rinse it thoroughly and let it dry before printing, following the plate instructions.
  5. Connect power and turn the printer on. Keep hands and loose objects clear of moving parts while it starts.

Let initial calibration finish

The A2L first-print workflow begins with power-on initialization and calibration. Leave the printer undisturbed until it reports that it is ready. Do not interrupt the process, move the bed by hand or begin a job while calibration is still running. Bambu Lab does not establish a reliable universal duration for this step, so do not plan around a quoted number of minutes; the on-screen completion state is the useful indication.

If the printer stops with an on-screen warning, read the exact message before cycling power. Check that the plate is seated and that no packaging remains, then follow the displayed recovery instruction. Repeating calibration without correcting the physical cause can reproduce the same fault.

Check the heatbed and build plate

After initialization, perform the heatbed check included in the manufacturer’s first-print flow. This is not a cosmetic inspection: the plate must sit flat and in the intended position so the first layer is deposited at the correct height.

  • Verify that the plate’s locating features line up with the heatbed.
  • Look for fingerprints, dust, adhesive residue or a protective film that the guide says should be removed.
  • Confirm that the plate selected later in the print settings matches the plate physically installed.
  • Do not print on a plate that is visibly damaged, warped or contaminated; clean or replace it according to the plate documentation.

The A2L Combo quick-start extract links incorrect plate alignment with possible touchscreen scratching. Treat that warning as a reason to stop and reseat the plate, not as a problem to solve by changing slicer settings.

Load filament using the path your package supports

Use a filament spool that matches the selected printer and material profile. PLA is the simplest example for a first job because Bambu Lab lists it as suitable for the A2L, but the spool, profile and model must agree. Keep the filament dry and free of knots so the first feed is not interrupted by a mechanical problem.

Standard A2L: external spool holder

  1. Mount the external spool holder in the position shown by the A2L guide.
  2. Place the spool so it unwinds in the direction shown in the printer instructions, without rubbing against the frame.
  3. Cut a clean filament tip and straighten the first section.
  4. Feed it through the external filament path and into the printer’s inlet, following the on-screen loading prompt.
  5. Continue only until the printer detects or extrudes filament as instructed. Do not push against resistance.
  6. Confirm that the filament is advancing smoothly and that the prompt reports a completed load.

If loading fails, remove the filament using the printer’s unload command, trim the end again and inspect the path for a bend or broken strand. A spool that cannot rotate freely can mimic an extruder fault.

A2L Combo: AMS Lite or external holder

AMS Lite is listed with the Combo version, not as a universal component of the standard A2L. Choose the route that matches your project and the hardware connected to your machine.

  • AMS Lite: Place the spool in the intended AMS Lite position, assign the loaded slot to the material you will print and follow the printer’s loading prompt. For a single-color first print, use one slot and make sure the selected slot’s material agrees with the slicer profile.
  • External spool holder: Use the same loading path described for the standard A2L. This is useful when the spool size, material or project does not call for AMS Lite.

Do not select an AMS slot in the job if the filament is actually mounted on the external holder. The printer must know where the material is physically loaded so it can feed and, when applicable, change it correctly.

Choose a first model that removes variables

Bambu Lab’s first-print guide directs you to choose a model from the printer’s available files, confirm its settings and then start. For a first attempt, select a small, manufacturer-profiled model or a file already available on the printer rather than introducing an unfamiliar geometry and custom settings at the same time.

Use Bambu Studio when you need to prepare a model on a computer. Select the A2L as the printer, select the installed build plate, choose the loaded filament and use the corresponding manufacturer profile. Before sending the job, check all three selections together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Printer: Bambu Lab A2L, not a similarly named machine.
  • Filament: the material and, where applicable, the AMS Lite slot or external spool path that is actually loaded.
  • Plate: the exact surface installed on the heatbed, with its matching profile.

If the model file contains its own profile, inspect the values rather than assuming they are correct for every plate or filament. A profile intended for a different material can alter temperatures, cooling and adhesion. Keep the first job at the model’s recommended settings until you have a successful baseline.

Confirm the job and start printing

  1. Review the preview. Check that the model fits on the virtual plate, that supports or other required features are present and that there is no warning about the selected printer or material.
  2. Send or select the model. If you are using a file on the printer, select it from the available files. If you sliced in Bambu Studio, send the prepared job to the A2L using the normal printer workflow.
  3. Confirm settings on the printer. Verify the printer, filament and plate selections one more time. This catches the common mistake of changing a spool without changing the job’s material assignment.
  4. Start the print. Keep the printer on a stable surface and leave the motion area clear.
  5. Watch the beginning of the job. Make sure the initial lines or first layer are being laid down on the intended plate and that filament is feeding continuously. If the printer reports a fault, pause or cancel through the on-screen controls and correct the stated issue before restarting.

Do not infer success from the first few movements alone. The first layer is the earliest useful confirmation that the plate, filament path and profile are all aligned.

Allow the print to finish, then remove the model correctly

When the job completes, follow the plate’s removal instructions and the printer’s on-screen guidance. The available manufacturer material does not establish one universal cooling interval or one removal technique for every A2L plate, so avoid prying at a hot model or forcing it with an unsuitable tool. Let the machine indicate completion, wait for the plate and model to be safe to handle according to the plate instructions, then remove the part using the intended method.

  • Inspect the part for the expected shape, intact walls and a firmly attached first layer.
  • Check the plate for leftover filament before the next job.
  • Store the plate clean and protected from fingerprints if you are not printing again immediately.

Common first-print problems and fixes

Symptom Likely check Corrective action
The printer will not complete initialization Shipping material, a misplaced plate or an obstruction remains. Turn attention to the on-screen message, power down only as directed, remove the identified obstruction and reseat the plate. Restart calibration after the physical cause is corrected.
Filament does not load The spool cannot rotate, the tip is bent or the selected route does not match the hardware. Unload, trim and straighten the filament, verify the AMS Lite slot or external holder, and try the guided load again.
The job reports a material or slot mismatch The slicer assignment differs from the filament actually installed. Cancel or pause safely, then correct the material assignment and physical loading path before restarting.
The model lifts or does not adhere Plate contamination, incorrect plate profile or poor seating. Stop the job, clean the plate with hot water and detergent when the plate instructions call for it, reseat it and select the matching plate profile.
The model is damaged during removal Removal was attempted while the part or plate was too warm, or the wrong technique was used. Follow the plate-specific removal guidance and avoid force. Do not treat one removal method as suitable for every surface.
The touchscreen is scratched or at risk The build plate is not aligned with the heatbed. Stop and correct the plate orientation and alignment using the A2L quick-start guide before printing again.

Check firmware and software before relying on a tutorial

Firmware changes over time, so use the live A2L download page rather than an old screenshot when checking updates. At the time of the supplied manufacturer information, the page showed version 01.01.05.00, dated October 12, 2026, with a print-then-cut feature and other optimizations and no known issues listed on that page. The page is in Chinese and release applicability can depend on region and device; verify the current version for your printer at https://bambulab.cn/zh-cn/support/firmware-download/a2l.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update only through the printer’s supported process and do not interrupt power during an update. Likewise, use the current Bambu Studio release and current A2L profile when preparing a computer-sliced job. If a tutorial shows different menu labels, treat the printer’s current on-screen instructions and the live manufacturer pages as authoritative.

Understand the A2L’s size when choosing projects

Bambu Lab lists a build volume of 330 × 320 × 325 mm for the A2L. That capacity is useful for larger parts or parts that would otherwise be split, but it does not remove the need to check the model’s orientation, supports and plate coverage. A large build volume also makes plate alignment and a clean surface more consequential: a small setup error can affect a larger first layer.

A practical preflight checklist

  • I confirmed whether my box is the standard A2L or the Combo package.
  • I used the A2L-specific quick-start guide for assembly and transport-restraint removal.
  • The external spool holder or AMS Lite is installed according to the package instructions.
  • The build plate is clean, correctly oriented and fully aligned with the heatbed.
  • Initialization and calibration completed without an active warning.
  • The filament route matches the hardware actually loaded.
  • The model uses the A2L printer profile, the correct filament assignment and the installed plate profile.
  • I reviewed the preview and confirmed settings before pressing start.
  • I know which plate-specific method to use for removing the finished model.

Once those checks pass, the manufacturer’s workflow is straightforward: initialize, check the heatbed, load filament, select and confirm the model, print and remove the result. Keep the A2L guide and the live firmware page available for later jobs because package contents, menu labels and firmware features can change.
