The exact maximum refresh rate, VRR label, HDR modes and maintenance schedule depend on your monitor, graphics card, cable and Windows configuration.
What you need before connecting anything
A 4K OLED monitor does not have one universal setup. “4K,” high refresh rate, HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR) are separate capabilities that must be supported by the monitor, GPU, port and cable at the same time. A monitor may advertise a high refresh rate but expose it only through one input, at a particular color mode, or with Display Stream Compression (DSC). Read the monitor manual and your graphics-card specifications first.

- Monitor model and firmware: note the native resolution, maximum refresh rates for each input, HDR formats, VRR support, DSC requirements and OLED-care instructions.
- Graphics card: check which DisplayPort and HDMI generations are present and whether the card can drive the desired 3840 × 2160 mode.
- Cable: use a cable whose specification matches both endpoints and the target resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR combination. A cable that works at 4K 60 Hz may not work at 4K 240 Hz.
- Windows edition and build: the menu names below describe current Windows 11 settings; wording can vary slightly by build.
- Game target: decide whether you prioritize the monitor’s maximum refresh rate, 10-bit HDR, VRR, or a particular console-compatible input. The best connection is the one that supports your actual combination.
Do not assume every 4K OLED has the same ports. For example, ASUS lists DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1 on its PG27UCDM product page, but that is a model example rather than a requirement for all 4K OLED displays.

Choose the correct port and cable
Compare the two connection paths
| Connection path | What to verify | Typical reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| DisplayPort from the GPU to the monitor | Port generation at both ends, cable rating, maximum 4K refresh rate, HDR bit depth, VRR support and whether DSC is required | Often the straightforward PC connection when the monitor and graphics card expose their most capable DisplayPort modes |
| HDMI from the GPU to the monitor | HDMI generation at both ends, cable rating, 4K refresh-rate limit, HDR and VRR support, and any input-specific restrictions | Useful when the monitor’s HDMI input supports the desired mode or when you also connect a console or receiver |
Those are comparison axes, not a universal ranking. A newer port on one device can still be limited by an older port on the other. Check the manual’s table of supported modes for the exact input you plan to use.

Connect to the discrete graphics card
If your desktop has a separate graphics card, plug the monitor into that card rather than the motherboard’s video output. The motherboard connector may be driven by integrated graphics and can expose fewer resolution, refresh-rate, HDR or VRR options. This advice does not assume every PC has a discrete GPU; on an integrated-graphics system, use the output documented by the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
When a replacement cable is justified
Replace the cable only when the current one cannot carry the mode you need, produces intermittent signal loss, or is not rated for the connection’s requirements. Check both endpoint manuals before buying. A replacement cable cannot overcome a port that lacks the required bandwidth, and a longer cable can be more sensitive to signal quality than a short one. Keep the original cable until the new connection has been verified at the intended resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR settings.
First connection and monitor on-screen setup
- Turn off the PC and monitor. Connect the selected DisplayPort or HDMI cable directly from the graphics card to the matching monitor input. Avoid adapters, docks and receivers during initial setup because each adds another possible limitation.
- Select the physical input. Use the monitor’s Input or Source control to choose the port you used. If the screen remains blank, check that the cable is fully seated at both ends and test another documented input before changing Windows settings.
- Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD). Record the current input, resolution information, refresh-rate indicator and HDR/VRR status if the OSD provides them. Do not immediately copy a preset or menu path from another model; labels and available controls differ.
- Update firmware only through the manufacturer’s documented method. A firmware update can change supported modes or fix handshake problems, but the updater, file and recovery process are model-specific. Do not interrupt power during an update.
- Leave image-enhancement options at their documented defaults for the first test. Once the signal is confirmed, adjust picture presets, black-level controls and response-time options one at a time so you can identify which setting changes the result.
Set 4K resolution and refresh rate in Windows
Use Advanced display settings
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If more than one screen is connected, select the OLED monitor in the display diagram or under the display list.
- Open Advanced display.
- Confirm that the selected display is the OLED monitor, then choose a refresh rate from the rate menu.
- Return to Settings > System > Display and open Display resolution. Select 3840 × 2160 when that is the monitor’s specified native resolution.
- Accept the change and check that the monitor’s OSD or information panel reports the same resolution and refresh rate.
Windows only lists refresh rates supported by the connected display configuration. Microsoft describes it this way: “The refresh rates that appear depend on your display and what it supports.” If the rate you expected is absent, do not force it with an unofficial mode. Verify the cable, both port specifications, GPU drivers and the monitor manual.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Understand why the maximum rate may not appear
- Wrong input: one monitor input may support a higher rate than another.
- Port mismatch: the GPU and monitor may use different generations or expose different bandwidth on each connector.
- Cable limitation: the cable may be suitable for 4K 60 Hz but not the advertised high-refresh mode.
- DSC requirement: some high-resolution, high-refresh combinations require Display Stream Compression. The monitor manual and GPU specifications must both support the required implementation.
- Driver or firmware state: an outdated graphics driver or monitor firmware can prevent a mode from appearing.
- Multi-monitor bandwidth: other displays, adapters or a dock can alter the available configuration.
Change one variable at a time. For example, connect the OLED directly to the GPU, use the documented high-bandwidth input, reboot, and check Advanced display again before changing color or HDR settings.

Enable adaptive sync or VRR
Adaptive sync changes the display refresh timing to follow the game’s frame output, reducing tearing when the monitor and GPU support a compatible VRR implementation. The exact certification name and driver control are model-dependent, so there is no universal NVIDIA or AMD menu path that can be promised for every combination.
- Open the monitor OSD and enable the setting named Adaptive-Sync, VRR, or a similar term documented for your model.
- In the graphics driver’s display settings, verify that the GPU detects the monitor as VRR-capable and exposes the relevant option.
- Enable the driver option, apply it to the OLED display, and start a game that supports an in-game frame-rate or V-sync setting.
- Check for a stable image while moving the camera. If you see flicker, blanking or brightness changes, consult the monitor manual for its VRR range and compatibility notes rather than stacking multiple unofficial tweaks.
VRR can be unavailable at a particular resolution, refresh rate, color mode or HDR mode. If enabling it removes the desired refresh rate, compare the monitor’s supported-mode table and the GPU driver’s current output rather than assuming the monitor is defective.
Turn on HDR for the OLED display in Windows
Enable HDR on the correct screen
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the 4K OLED in the display diagram. This step matters when another monitor is connected.
- Open HDR (on some Windows builds this appears under the selected display’s settings).
- Turn on the HDR switch only if Windows reports that the selected display supports HDR.
- Launch an HDR game or video and confirm the monitor’s OSD changes to its HDR status, if the model provides such an indicator.
HDR is configured per display. Enabling it while another screen is selected changes that screen, not necessarily the OLED. Windows may also expose an SDR-content brightness control. Adjust it separately if desktop applications look too dim or too bright while HDR is enabled; SDR and HDR signals are handled differently by the display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not confuse HDR availability with HDR quality
A Windows HDR toggle confirms that the operating system recognizes an HDR-capable display; it does not establish a universal peak-brightness figure, tone-mapping preference or game-specific picture mode. Use the monitor’s manual for its HDR modes and leave tone-mapping controls at the documented default until you understand what each option does. If an HDR game looks washed out, verify that the game itself is in HDR mode, that the correct display is selected, and that the monitor has not been switched back to an SDR preset.

Calibrate HDR with Microsoft’s Windows 11 app (optional)
Windows 11 includes an HDR Calibration app for setting visible shadow detail, highlight detail and maximum brightness with three test patterns. It is a software step, not proof that you need a purchased colorimeter.
- Install or open the Windows HDR Calibration app on the Windows 11 PC.
- Move the app to the OLED and run it full screen. Calibration performed on another display will not describe the OLED’s output.
- Follow the first pattern to set how much dark detail remains visible without lifting blacks unnecessarily.
- Use the second pattern to set highlight detail so bright areas are not clipped earlier than intended.
- Use the third pattern to set the display’s maximum-brightness behavior as presented by the app.
- Review the color-saturation control. Stop increasing it when colors begin to look unnatural.
- Save the profile and test it with the games and applications you actually use.
Microsoft recommends considering calibration and repeating it after changing the display setup. Re-run it after changing the monitor input, HDR mode, Windows display arrangement or a major firmware/driver configuration. A colorimeter is an optional advanced tool for readers who need measured color profiling; the Windows app itself does not establish that hardware as necessary.
Set up OLED protection and maintenance
Keep pixel-care features enabled
OLED panels can retain a static image when the same elements remain on screen for an extended period. Manufacturer protection systems typically reduce this risk with screen movement, dimming, a screensaver prompt, pixel refresh or panel refresh. Names, timers and trigger conditions differ by model.
- Leave the monitor’s OLED-care or pixel-care system enabled unless the manual gives a specific reason to disable a feature temporarily.
- Allow the monitor to run its prompted refresh cycle when you turn it off or enter standby. Do not cut power with a switch or power strip while a documented maintenance cycle is running.
- Use Windows’ screen timeout or a screensaver for long idle periods, especially when a static desktop, browser, editor or game HUD would otherwise remain visible.
- Turn the monitor off when you will be away for an extended period rather than leaving a static image displayed.
Follow the exact model’s refresh instructions
Dell’s support guidance for named Alienware OLED models warns that static images can cause image retention and describes Pixel Refresh and Panel Refresh operations. Those timings and menu labels apply to the affected models in that guidance, not to every OLED monitor. Use your own monitor’s OSD prompt and manual for the interval, duration and conditions of each operation. Never substitute another manufacturer’s hours or menu sequence.

Balance care with normal gaming
Do not disable protection features just to preserve a particular desktop layout or HUD. If a game has a static interface, enable its own HUD transparency, movement or timeout options where available. Vary full-screen content, avoid leaving paused games on screen for hours, and let the monitor complete its maintenance prompt. These are preventive practices, not a guarantee against image retention.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Game-side settings after Windows is correct
- Select the native resolution. In the game’s video menu, choose 3840 × 2160 when the title supports it and your performance target allows it.
- Choose HDR in the game. Some games require a separate HDR toggle even after Windows HDR is enabled. Follow the game’s own calibration screens for paper-white and peak-brightness values only when they correspond to the monitor’s documented behavior.
- Use VRR deliberately. If VRR is enabled, test the game with its frame-rate limiter and V-sync options as documented by the GPU vendor and game developer. Avoid assuming one combination is optimal for every engine.
- Set a realistic frame-rate target. A 4K OLED’s maximum refresh rate is an output ceiling, not a promise that every game will render at that rate. Use the game’s quality settings, upscaling options or frame limiter to keep delivery stable.
- Check overlays and static elements. Hide unnecessary overlays and avoid leaving a paused game or monitoring dashboard visible when you step away.
Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
The monitor shows no signal
- Confirm the cable is connected to the graphics card, not the motherboard output on a desktop with a discrete GPU.
- Select the exact input used in the monitor OSD.
- Reseat both ends, remove adapters or docks, and test the cable supplied with the monitor if available.
- Try another documented GPU output only after checking that output’s specification.
- Power-cycle the monitor and PC, then check for a firmware or graphics-driver issue using the manufacturers’ instructions.
3840 × 2160 is missing
Verify the monitor’s native-resolution specification, selected input, GPU output and cable. If Windows offers only lower resolutions, the connection may be negotiating a restricted mode or passing through an adapter. Restore a direct GPU-to-monitor connection before attempting any custom resolution.
The advertised refresh rate is unavailable
Open Advanced display and note every rate Windows lists. Compare that list with the monitor manual’s input-specific table. Check whether the target mode requires DSC, a particular DisplayPort or HDMI input, 10-bit output restrictions, or a newer cable. Windows will not list a mode that the current display configuration does not report as supported.
HDR is missing or applies to the wrong screen
Return to Settings > System > Display, select the OLED itself, and open HDR. If Windows does not report HDR support, confirm the cable and input, update the GPU driver if appropriate, and check the monitor’s OSD HDR setting. With multiple monitors, repeat the selection step before changing the HDR switch.

HDR looks gray, dim or oversaturated
- Confirm both Windows HDR and the game’s HDR mode are enabled.
- Check whether the monitor is in its HDR picture mode rather than an SDR preset.
- Adjust the Windows SDR-content brightness control for desktop applications.
- Run the Windows HDR Calibration app full screen on the OLED and avoid pushing saturation until colors look unnatural.
- Restore the monitor’s documented HDR default if an aggressive tone-mapping option was enabled.
VRR flickers or causes black screens
Confirm that Adaptive-Sync or VRR is enabled in both the monitor OSD and the graphics driver, then compare the monitor’s stated VRR range with the game’s frame-rate behavior. Test the same resolution and refresh rate without HDR, then without VRR, to isolate the trigger. If the fault occurs only in one mode, use the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance instead of forcing an unsupported combination.
Image retention appears
Stop displaying the static content, allow the monitor’s documented pixel-care cycle to run, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not apply a different brand’s refresh interval or menu command. If the image does not clear after the prescribed cycle, record the model, firmware and conditions and contact the manufacturer.
A repeatable final verification checklist
- The cable runs directly from the GPU to the monitor’s documented high-capability input.
- Windows identifies the OLED as the selected display.
- Resolution is 3840 × 2160 when that is the panel’s native specification.
- Advanced display shows the intended refresh rate, not merely the monitor’s advertised maximum.
- Adaptive-Sync or VRR is enabled only where both monitor and GPU support it.
- HDR is enabled for the OLED itself, and an HDR game reports HDR active.
- Windows HDR Calibration, if used, was run full screen on this monitor.
- OLED-care features, screensaver and display timeout remain active.
- The monitor completes its prompted maintenance cycle without being unplugged.
When to stop changing settings
Once the native resolution, desired Windows-listed refresh rate, HDR and supported VRR mode work reliably, stop adding tweaks that the manual does not document. There is no universal best OLED preset, color profile, maximum refresh rate or maintenance schedule without the exact monitor, GPU, cable, Windows build and game. Keep a note of the working input, cable and settings so you can restore them after a driver update or desk move.
