For sharp desktop text and smooth gameplay, keep the monitor at its native 3840 × 2160 resolution, make interface elements larger with display scaling rather than lowering resolution, and select the highest refresh rate your monitor, graphics hardware, connection, and software support together. Then check variable refresh rate (VRR) and HDR separately: neither can compensate for a resolution or refresh-rate mismatch.
1. Connect through a port that supports your target mode
A monitor’s advertised maximum refresh rate is not guaranteed on every input or with every cable. The usable combination of 4K resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR depends on the monitor, graphics device, connection path, and settings. Check both device manuals for the specific port and mode you want, and connect the monitor directly to the computer when possible.

That recommendation is specific to the Mac models and conditions covered by Apple; it is not a universal cable rule for PCs or all monitors. See Apple’s guidance on using an 8K display with a Mac.

- Confirm the same input and output are available on the monitor and computer.
- Verify that the exact connection supports your target resolution and refresh rate, including HDR or VRR if you want those features.
- Check whether the monitor requires an on-screen display (OSD) setting to enable a high-refresh mode, HDR, or Adaptive Sync.
2. Keep the monitor at native 4K for clear text
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the 4K monitor, and choose the resolution marked Recommended. For a standard 4K UHD monitor, that is normally 3840 × 2160. Using a lower-than-native resolution can make text and other details less sharp. Microsoft explains resolution and display layout in its Windows screen resolution and layout guide.

Make text larger without reducing resolution
If text and controls are too small, adjust Scale & layout in Display settings. Start with the recommended scale, then increase it to suit your screen size, viewing distance, and eyesight. For text specifically, use Settings > Accessibility > Text size. Scaling and text-size preferences vary; there is no single percentage that fits every 4K setup. 3. Choose the highest refresh rate available at 4K
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor, and choose a refresh rate from the available list. After changing it, confirm that the resolution is still 3840 × 2160. Windows notes that the rates shown depend on the display; a rate marked with an asterisk does not support the current resolution and may change it. The monitor’s maximum rate may also depend on its input, cable, graphics output, or an OSD mode.

Use Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions if you need help finding the setting. If the rate you expect is missing, recheck the selected monitor, connection, resolution, and monitor menu rather than assuming the panel itself is the only limit.
4. Enable VRR only when the full setup supports it
Variable refresh rate synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with compatible graphics output to make motion smoother when frame rates fluctuate. In Windows Advanced display, check whether the selected display reports VRR support. If supported, enable the relevant Adaptive Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC-compatible option in the monitor’s OSD and graphics controls as applicable. Compatible games may manage VRR automatically.

VRR is conditional on the monitor, graphics hardware, connection, drivers, and game. Confirm that the display is still running at your intended 4K resolution and refresh rate; enabling VRR does not establish either one. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate and VRR guidance.

HDR requires support across the display, computer, and connection. Microsoft lists DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB-C, and Thunderbolt among the interfaces used with supported HDR displays. The exact capabilities still depend on the devices and connection path. Check Microsoft’s overview of HDR in Windows and Windows HDR settings.

If text has colored fringes or colors look wrong
Compare the text with HDR turned off to see whether the effect is limited to HDR rendering. Microsoft recommends checking graphics drivers and connection options if black text has colored fringes; if HDR works over DisplayPort but not through the current HDMI path, DisplayPort may be preferable. HDR does not fix low-resolution scaling or a refresh-rate mismatch.

Microsoft’s built-in display HDR calibration instructions apply to built-in panels, not external monitors. For an external HDR display, Microsoft directs users to the Windows HDR Calibration app. Follow Microsoft’s HDR calibration guidance to choose the applicable method.
6. Set display modes in macOS
On a Mac, open System Settings > Displays to choose available display modes. Some displays also require a built-in menu setting to enable high-resolution modes or VRR. If the expected option is missing, check the exact Mac model, port, monitor input, OSD settings, and device documentation.
Apple lists certain Mac models as supporting up to 240 Hz at 4K on compatible displays. That figure applies only to the models and conditions Apple specifies, not to every Mac or 4K monitor. Consult Apple’s 8K display and Mac compatibility guidance for the supported configurations.
