How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Stream with a Static Image Between Videos

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a 24/7 YouTube stream that plays prerecorded videos with a still image between them, send YouTube a continuous feed from an encoder such as OBS. OBS can loop a video playlist and display a separate image, but its documented playlist and image sources do not provide a built-in setting to insert that image automatically between every playlist item. For unattended transitions, combine each video and the desired still-image interval into a rendered sequence, or use an automation method you have verified end to end.

How the setup works

YouTube receives a live audio/video feed from an encoder. You create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio, then connect OBS using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. OBS plays the media and sends the outgoing feed; for a local setup, the computer running OBS and its internet connection must stay available for the broadcast to continue.

If this is your first time enabling live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours. Set up and test the broadcast before the time you need it to be live.

Prepare the video and still-image sequence

Choose how the still will appear between videos

OBS documents a VLC Video source for playlists and a separate Image source for stills. Those capabilities let you loop videos and show an image, but the reviewed OBS documentation does not establish a built-in timer or rule that inserts the still after each playlist item. A playlist can therefore move from one video to the next without automatically showing your image in between.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a no-touch sequence, render each video together with the still-image interval that should follow it, then add the resulting media files to the playlist in order. Alternatively, use a specific automation workflow only after verifying that it changes sources at the right times and recovers as intended. If you operate the stream manually, you can toggle the image source between videos, but that requires someone to manage the transitions.

Prepare files and playback order

  • Decide how long the image should remain on screen and whether it needs audio. Include the appropriate interval in the rendered sequence if you choose that approach.
  • Keep the media files in a stable local folder accessible to OBS. Check the order before going live.
  • If the videos have audio, listen through the transitions. A still image does not itself provide audio, so decide whether the interval should be silent or include audio as part of the rendered media.

Create the YouTube live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create an encoder stream, or open Manage → Schedule stream if you want a scheduled watch page.
  2. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in screenshots, documents, or a public page.
  3. Keep the Live Control Room open for the preview and stream-health status while you configure OBS and run a test.

Build the playlist and add the image in OBS

  1. Install VLC before adding an OBS VLC Video source. OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the local video files in the intended order. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if the order matters, and enable Loop Playlist to repeat it.
  3. Add an Image source and select the still-image file. Common supported formats include PNG, JPEG/JPG, BMP, TGA, and GIF.
  4. In the Sources list, place the image above the video source when it should cover the video. Source order controls which source appears on top. Resize the image to fit the output canvas, and verify the framing in the preview.
  5. Use your prepared rendered sequence or verified automation to create the between-video intervals. Merely adding the Image source above the VLC source does not schedule it to appear between playlist items.

Choose encoder settings that fit your connection

YouTube advises choosing stream settings that your upload connection can sustain. Run an upload speed test, leave headroom beyond the video bitrate for network variation and other traffic, and test the actual setup. The figures below are YouTube Help’s current H.264 ingestion recommendations; they are encoder settings, not guarantees of the quality viewers will receive.

Output Minimum video bitrate setting Recommended video bitrate setting
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

For a straightforward SDR stream, YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt data into and through Google’s servers, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Match the resolution and frame rate to the media you intend to play and the upload connection you have tested.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Start the OBS stream output and confirm that the preview appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
  2. Run a private or unlisted test with representative audio and motion. Check the picture, sound level, playlist order, and the still-image interval—not just the first few seconds.
  3. Watch stream health for dropped frames or connection problems, and make sure the upload connection has headroom for the chosen bitrate.
  4. Let the test run through at least one complete video-to-image-to-video transition. If you use automation, test the full sequence and any reconnect behavior before relying on it unattended.
  5. Once the test works, start the intended broadcast and monitor it periodically. A local OBS stream still depends on the host computer and its network connection remaining available.

Copyright, channel policy, and archives

Use media you are allowed to broadcast

Only stream material your channel owns or is authorized to broadcast. Having a copy of a video, or having previously uploaded it, does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed to retransmit it in a live loop. Check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your specific material; copyright claims and repetitive-content eligibility depend on the content and circumstances.

Plan for a 24/7 stream’s recording separately

YouTube Help states: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder. All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Because a continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated archive threshold, do not assume YouTube will provide one complete archive of the entire broadcast. If retaining the recording matters, plan to capture or segment it independently and check YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive.

Common problems and fixes

  • The stream does not connect: Confirm that live streaming has finished activating, that OBS has the correct server URL and current stream key, and that the encoder is sending output. Keep the key private; replace it in OBS if it has been exposed.
  • The VLC Video source is missing or does not play: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source again.
  • The still image never appears between videos: The image source is separate from the playlist and does not automatically create timed interstitials. Render the intervals into the media sequence, verify an automation workflow, or have an operator toggle the image.
  • The image is hidden behind the video: Move the Image source above the VLC Video source in the Sources list, then check its size and position in the preview.
  • The playlist order changes or does not repeat: Turn off Shuffle Playlist when order matters and enable Loop Playlist.
  • Viewers report buffering or the stream health is poor: Check the upload connection and reduce the selected bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a setting the connection can sustain. Test again with representative content and leave upload headroom.
  • The stream ends when you leave: In the local OBS approach, the host computer and connection must remain available. A local encoder is not an always-on cloud host.
  • You cannot find a complete archive afterward: A 24/7 stream is longer than YouTube Help’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive threshold. Use a separate capture or segmentation plan if you need a complete recording.
