Prepare music you are permitted to stream, configure OBS as an encoder, test the signal, and plan how to handle session restarts and recordings.
Before you start: check channel access and music rights
Make sure the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. Encoder streaming through OBS is supported. Check eligibility and enable live streaming before the planned broadcast; do not leave activation until the day you intend to launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Confirm rights to every recording
A devotional or traditional subject does not establish that a particular recording or arrangement is free to rebroadcast. Confirm that you have permission for both the underlying musical work and the specific sound recording, including live streaming and any archive or VOD use you intend to allow. YouTube scans live video and audio for third-party matches; a detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. If you are licensed, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself does not ensure uninterrupted playback. YouTube for Artists also advises creators using protected music to coordinate with their label or distributor. See YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming restrictions and YouTube for Artists.
Choose your broadcast format and continuity plan
Prepared playlist or live performance
A playlist of prepared files is often the simpler OBS setup: use media you have permission to stream and create a scene with authorized devotional artwork or another visual. If you are singing or playing live, an appropriate microphone or audio interface can provide the sound; it is optional, not a YouTube requirement. You can also combine a live source with prepared material, but check that the rights cover every recording used.

One long session or repeated sessions
Do not rely on a single 24-hour session if a complete YouTube archive matters. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Plan periodic session restarts and/or make a local recording if you need an archive. YouTube does not specify a restart cadence that guarantees uninterrupted viewing, so treat restarts as an archive and operations decision rather than a promise of continuous playback. Create the YouTube Live event

Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream. Set a clear title, description, visibility, and audience designation appropriate to your channel and content.

In the stream setup, use YouTube’s OBS integration or encoder preset if available. Otherwise, copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. YouTube documents both connection approaches in its encoder setup instructions.

Keep the stream key private. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not show it in a screen capture, stream overlay, or public post.
Configure OBS for a stable stream
Build a scene and check the audio

In OBS, create a scene for the stream and add the authorized artwork or video source you intend viewers to see. For a prepared playlist, add the media source or sources and configure looping as needed. For a live performance, add the appropriate audio input.

Check the OBS audio mixer while the source plays or the performer tests the input. Confirm the correct device is selected, the level is not clipping, and audio is audible in the program output. Verify the picture and sound together in YouTube’s preview before going live.
Set the encoder and connection
In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube/RTMPS if the integration is available; otherwise enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. In OBS output and video settings, choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can sustain, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported video codecs and AAC or MP3 for audio. OBS menu labels can vary by version; follow the corresponding stream, output, and video controls in your installed release. Recheck YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before a production change.

Choose a bitrate and allow upload headroom
The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 encoder bitrate examples for the listed resolution and frame rate, not promises of viewer quality or stream stability. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare upload capacity; test sustained outbound bandwidth and choose a bitrate that leaves that margin.

These are encoder ingestion specifications on YouTube Help, whose publication year is not stated on the page; the figures were accessed in 2026. Higher resolution can make static devotional artwork sharper, but it also increases bandwidth demand. Choose the output that fits your sustained connection and the content, rather than assuming a higher setting is automatically more reliable. YouTube’s bandwidth guidance is at its encoder settings page; its advice to maintain 20% upload headroom is in live encoder troubleshooting.
Test, then start the broadcast

Start streaming from OBS and wait for the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room.

Check the preview for the intended picture, correctly oriented artwork, and audible, synchronized sound. Confirm that the right event is selected and that its visibility and audience settings are as intended.

When the preview and stream health are satisfactory, use the Control Room’s Go live control for a scheduled workflow. Keep an eye on stream health and the OBS status while the broadcast runs. YouTube recommends testing before a live event.

If you need a local archive, configure and verify a local recording separately. Do not assume YouTube will retain a complete recording of a session that exceeds 12 hours.
Common problems and fixes

You cannot enable live streaming: verify the channel and confirm that it has no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Enable streaming before the planned event.

YouTube does not receive OBS: check that OBS is connected to the intended event and that the server URL and stream key match Live Control Room. Replace a key if it was exposed publicly.

The preview buffers or stream health degrades: test sustained upload speed, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce output resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings. A speed test alone does not establish that a connection will remain stable for a long broadcast.

Video appears but audio does not: check the selected OBS input, scene source, mixer level, and whether the source is muted. Test playback in the Control Room preview before starting the event.

The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: review YouTube’s copyright notice and identify the matched recording. Resolve the rights issue with the relevant rights holder; if you already have a license, ask about Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume that restarting OBS resolves a music-rights match.

The broadcast ends or the computer loses power or internet: OBS depends on the computer and its connection remaining available. The sources do not establish an OBS configuration that guarantees automatic recovery or a 24/7 uninterrupted session. Plan monitoring and a recovery procedure, and use a local recording if the archive matters.

A long session has no complete archive: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Use shorter sessions and/or record locally when a complete archive is important.
