For a 720p30 H.264 stream, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps video bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. The main limitation is archiving: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep local recordings if you need complete replays.
Before you begin: confirm channel access and sermon rights
Enable live streaming before launch day
Your YouTube channel must be verified and eligible for live streaming, with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and turn on streaming in advance using YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide.

Review every recording and its included material
Make sure the church or channel has the necessary rights to stream each sermon and every element in it: music, photographs, video clips, slides, and the Bible translation, for example. YouTube’s livestream terms require the necessary rights for live content and archived content. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party copyrighted material. A detected match can replace the video with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption.

Organize files and choose a presentation
Decide whether the stream will repeat one sermon, cycle through a set of recordings, or follow a planned sequence. Check that speech is clear and that the picture—such as a church-branded title card or sermon video—is intentional. These are production choices, not YouTube requirements. If you will use multiple files, test the exact playlist or concatenation method with those files: differing codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, or timestamps can affect whether playback transitions cleanly.

Create a YouTube Live stream and get its RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Studio. Choose Create → Go Live.
- Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room, choosing the settings appropriate to the channel and broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key for this stream from Live Control Room. The key is a credential: do not publish it, put it in a public script, or share it where others can use it.
- Use the current RTMPS URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Live Control Room may initially show an ordinary RTMP address, so confirm that you have the RTMPS endpoint before configuring the encoder. See YouTube’s RTMPS encryption guide and its RTMPS ingestion documentation.
Use the URL and key for the particular stream you created. Do not copy a key from a sample command or assume an endpoint format: obtain the current values in Live Control Room.
Choose encoder settings for a sermon stream
YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p at 30 frames per second is 3 Mbps. A simple static sermon image or title card often does not need a higher frame rate, but choose a resolution at which any on-screen text remains readable and test the actual source material.

Before relying on the profile, compare it with YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance. Test upload capacity and watch stream health in Live Control Room. Leave headroom for network variation and other devices using the connection; the recommended bitrate does not guarantee a stable broadcast.
Loop one sermon file with FFmpeg
Install an FFmpeg build that includes the libx264 and AAC encoders used below. Confirm the installed build’s options and loop behavior against the FFmpeg documentation. This is a starting command pattern, not a tested recipe: you may need to scale or otherwise adapt the source, and the RTMPS address must match the one shown in Live Control Room.

- Replace
sermon.mp4with the path to your file. - Replace the endpoint placeholder with the current RTMPS URL and stream key supplied in Live Control Room. Keep the real key private; do not publish it in a script or command example.
- The command requests real-time input reading, infinite looping, H.264 video at 3 Mbps, 30 fps, and a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps), plus AAC audio. The two-second interval follows YouTube’s recommendation.
- The command does not explicitly scale video. If the source is not 720p, add and test an appropriate video filter or select a profile that matches your source.
- Use Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube receives the video and audio and reports healthy stream status before treating the setup as ready.
Using several sermon recordings
A single-file loop is simpler to validate than a long program assembled from files with different technical properties. For a collection, prepare a playlist or concatenated program suited to the actual recordings, then test the full sequence, including transitions and audio. There is no single safe playlist command for every mix of files: codec, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and timestamps affect the method. Do not assume an untested playlist will loop seamlessly or run indefinitely.

FFmpeg running in a terminal is not by itself a complete 24/7 operating plan. The host still depends on power, network service, available capacity, and a restart process. Run FFmpeg under a service manager or process supervisor if it must restart after a reboot or crash, and monitor both the process and YouTube stream health. Test the restart procedure before relying on it. Store the key in protected configuration or an environment variable rather than a shared or public script.

- Before unattended use: test the complete sermon or playlist, audio, stream health, and recovery after a deliberate process restart.
- During operation: check that the host and network remain available and that the YouTube stream is still receiving content.
- For recovery: know how the supervisor restarts FFmpeg and how you will verify that the encoder reconnects to the correct stream.
Plan for YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
Continuous transmission does not promise a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording as backup; see YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; consult its DVR guidance.

That makes it easier to preserve and find a particular message than relying on one continuous stream’s replay. The right format depends on whether your priority is always-on listening, live community, easy sermon navigation, or a dependable archive.
