What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can use Streamlabs Desktop to encode a YouTube livestream, but a local setup is only 24/7 while the computer, the app, power, network connection, and video source keep running. The setup below covers channel eligibility, the YouTube event, Streamlabs scenes, encoder settings, launch, and monitoring. It also explains the key limitation: the current Streamlabs guidance cited here does not establish a local-file looping control or automatic recovery after a failure.
What you need for a continuous stream
A 24/7 broadcast needs more than a successful click on Go Live: a continuing video source and an encoder must deliver a feed to YouTube without interruption. With Streamlabs Desktop, the encoder runs on your computer, so the PC, Streamlabs, power, and internet connection must remain available. YouTube warns that network disruptions can break a stream and recommends monitoring stream quality and health (YouTube encoder setup; YouTube stream health guidance).
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Streamlabs Desktop installed and connected to the YouTube account that will host the stream.
- A scene and a source that can keep producing the intended content.
- A stable computer, power supply, and upload connection capable of sustaining the stream.
- A YouTube event and its corresponding stream connection details.
Enable YouTube live streaming first
- Sign in to the intended channel and confirm it is verified and eligible. YouTube requires verification and says the channel must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days (YouTube encoder setup).
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio if it is not already active. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this well before the planned broadcast (YouTube encoder setup).
Prepare Streamlabs Desktop and your scene
- Install Streamlabs Desktop and sign in to the YouTube account you intend to use. Streamlabs’ Quick Start lists Windows 11 and macOS 12 as minimum operating systems; software requirements can change, so check the current requirements before installing (Streamlabs Desktop Quick Start).
- In Desktop, create or select a scene. Use the Sources panel to add the visuals and any camera or capture sources your content needs; check the preview so it contains only the material you intend to broadcast.
- Check the audio mixer. Play the scene and confirm that intended audio is present at a usable level and that unwanted desktop, microphone, or source audio is not being sent.
- Make sure your content source will keep producing a feed. The cited Streamlabs guidance covers general scene and source setup, but does not establish a current local-file loop control or its exact label and behavior. Do not assume that adding a video file makes it repeat indefinitely; verify looping in your installed version before relying on it.
Create the YouTube event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set the title, description, thumbnail, category, privacy, and any available stream settings. You can instead use Streamlabs Desktop’s scheduling flow, though Streamlabs’ scheduling guide may describe interface details that have since changed (YouTube live stream settings; Streamlabs scheduling guide).
- Choose how to connect: sign into YouTube in Desktop and create a new event there, or create the event in YouTube Studio first and select it in Desktop’s Go Live flow (Streamlabs scheduling guide).
- If configuring an encoder manually, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the corresponding Streamlabs connection settings. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio (YouTube live stream settings).
- Confirm that the selected event, channel, privacy setting, and key all match. A scheduled event can be promoted in advance, and YouTube says viewers can opt into reminders.
Choose stable encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP. Use the bitrate table on YouTube’s current encoder settings page to choose a target for your selected resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal (YouTube encoder settings).
- Pick a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode continuously and your connection can upload reliably. The highest setting is not the best choice if it leads to dropped frames or instability.
- Use CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval where those controls are available in your Streamlabs output settings.
- Base the bitrate on YouTube’s table for the specific resolution and frame rate, then test the result with the actual motion and audio in your scene (YouTube encoder settings).
- YouTube recommends keeping the total of your stream bitrates below available upload capacity with about 20% headroom. Check upload speed, account for other network traffic, and include both primary and backup bitrates if you configure both (YouTube stream health guidance).
Test, go live, and monitor
- Start the encoder in Streamlabs and wait for the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check that the right scene, video, and audio are arriving.
- Inspect YouTube’s stream health and correct warnings before relying on the broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance and checking the preview (YouTube encoder setup).
- When the preview is ready, go live in Live Control Room if the event workflow requires it. Confirm the stream is public, unlisted, or private as intended.
- For a long-running stream, monitor stream health, audio and picture quality, local recording or archive-file growth if applicable, and whether the content source is still advancing.
What a local 24/7 setup does—and does not—guarantee
Streamlabs Desktop sends a feed while the local setup is operating. A sleeping or restarting PC, app failure, power loss, or network interruption can stop it. YouTube’s settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls, but their presence does not establish that a source will loop or that an encoder will recover after the computer or connection fails (YouTube live stream settings; YouTube stream health guidance). A wired Ethernet connection may help if the PC’s Wi-Fi link is unreliable, but it is optional and cannot prevent an ISP outage.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance is not a promise that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be saved as a single complete archive; plan archive needs separately and check YouTube’s current behavior for your use case (YouTube encoder setup).
Copyright, reused content, and channel safety
Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permissions to use. A video being pre-recorded, publicly accessible, or already online does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and monetization policies for reused content before building a continuous channel around material you did not create or license. A stream can also be interrupted by a claim or restriction, so permission and platform compliance matter as much as encoder stability.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlabs will not connect | Wrong event, stream URL, or key; account session issue. | Confirm the selected YouTube event and connection details. Sign out and back in to Desktop, restart the app, and recheck the key. If a custom ingest/server selection is involved, refresh it as Streamlabs recommends (Streamlabs Desktop troubleshooting). |
| YouTube preview is blank or shows the wrong content | Wrong scene or source, or the source has stopped producing video. | Check the Desktop preview and Sources panel, select the intended scene, and verify the source is playing before going live. |
| Video stutters, buffers, or loses connection | Upload capacity is insufficient, competing traffic is high, or the network is unstable. | Check upload rather than download speed, reduce bitrate or output settings, and aim for YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. Test again and inspect YouTube stream health (YouTube stream health guidance). |
| Audio is missing, too loud, or unintended | Source routing or mixer levels are wrong. | Play the scene before broadcast, inspect each mixer source, mute unwanted inputs, and verify the YouTube preview includes the expected audio. |
| The broadcast stops after an interruption | The PC, application, power, source, or network stopped; recovery is not established by the cited Streamlabs guidance. | Restore the local setup, confirm the source and event, restart the encoder, and check the preview and stream health before returning live. For unattended operation, use a cloud-based 24/7 approach rather than assuming a desktop encoder will self-recover. |
