Use a title that identifies the subject and language. In the description, explain the class schedule, level, syllabus or exam context where relevant, and how students can ask questions. Decide whether the stream is public, unlisted, or private, and whether chat will be on and moderated.

Check YouTube Live eligibility before launch
YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by a streamer at least 16 years old. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Choose visibility and other stream settings deliberately. Copy the stream details into your encoder and keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Choose how to play the lessons
Local encoder: OBS
YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source software. This can be a low-cost starting point if someone can keep the computer awake, connected to the internet, and running the playlist and encoder continuously. Disable sleep and automatic shutdown, make sure the playlist transitions correctly, and account for local power and network interruptions. Cloud playout services
A cloud playout service can avoid keeping a dedicated local PC running. Dedicated hardware
YouTube lists hardware encoders, but a prerecorded education loop does not automatically need broadcast equipment. Consider dedicated hardware only when production needs justify the added cost and the unit supports the required workflow.

Configure video, audio, and connection settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as the technical source of truth. Its guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS delivery (with RTMPS recommended for encrypted delivery), H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, constant bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube supports up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Start at a resolution your sustained upload connection can support. Run an upload speed test and leave headroom for stability; a higher resolution is not better if the connection cannot sustain it. Test with sound and motion, not just a static slide. YouTube recommends checking stream health and reviewing messages during the broadcast. The 2–4 Mbps figure sometimes cited for NIC’s government webcast service is not a general YouTube recommendation.

- Build the playlist. Check that every file plays, audio is audible, and transitions do not leave long unintended gaps.
- Schedule or create a test stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Use private or unlisted visibility while testing.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the stream details from the Live Control Room, choose a supported codec and stable resolution, and set constant bitrate and the recommended keyframe interval.
- Watch the stream as a viewer. Check lesson sound, levels, playback, transitions, title, description, and the audience-facing playback page from another device if available.
- Check stream health and messages. Resolve warnings before switching to the planned public schedule.
- Set an operating rota. A 24-hour stream needs a named person or rotation to check for outages and handle chat. YouTube does not mandate a particular staffing level, but unattended operation still needs a recovery plan.
A Google-hosted YouTube Live guide recommends testing in advance, considering an external microphone, moderating chat or turning it off, and planning rights for third-party material. Clear content rights and protect students
Secure appropriate rights for third-party music, images, clips, and other material. Educational intent alone does not clear copyrighted content. YouTube Community Guidelines and terms apply to live streams, and monetization policies apply to them too. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material remains ineligible under existing policy. Plan moderation for all operating hours, particularly if students are minors. YouTube says live chat may be disabled for channels featuring children aged 13–15; if they are not visibly accompanied by an adult, the account may temporarily lose chat or other features. Obtain permissions appropriate to your content and institution for classroom recordings and student participation. Plan recordings separately from the live schedule
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
