A local bhajan mandali can keep a YouTube channel playing around the clock, but a single stream should not be treated as an indefinitely archivable broadcast: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. First decide whether you are broadcasting live musicians or looping recordings, confirm the channel can go live, configure and test an encoder, clear music rights, and plan how streams will be handed off and recorded.
Choose what “24/7” means for your mandali
The setup depends on whether the channel will show musicians performing live, play prerecorded bhajans, or alternate between the two. A live performance needs a camera or fixed scene and a tested microphone or mixer path. A prerecorded program needs prepared video files and a playback workflow. Either way, plan for someone to check the stream and for the broadcast to recover from power, network, or platform interruptions.

- Live performance: test the singer-and-instrument mix in the room where the stream will run. No particular microphone, camera, or mixer is established as right for every mandali.
- Prerecorded programming: confirm that the recordings and any visual material are cleared for streaming and replay.
- Mixed programming: test transitions between live and recorded segments, and make sure the operator knows how to monitor them.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for creators who need external equipment such as microphones and preamps or want overlays. YouTube also documents HLS as an alternative ingestion method; it has higher latency than RTMP, so there is no need to choose HLS unless your encoder workflow calls for it. YouTube’s encoder guidance and HLS ingestion documentation describe these options.
Check channel eligibility before launch
- Verify the YouTube channel.
- Check that it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Enable live streaming well before the planned start. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Confirm the person operating the stream meets YouTube’s stated minimum age requirement of 16.
These requirements are described in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide. Do not leave first-time activation until the day of a prayer gathering or special event.

Configure the encoder and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s YouTube/custom-server fields.
- Keep the key private. It functions like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to the channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set up the scene and audio source, then use the encoder preview and Live Control Room preview to confirm the intended picture and sound before starting the public broadcast.
YouTube’s help page also says a channel can have up to 10 active streams and a stream key can be used for up to three streams; these limits are not a reason to run duplicate encoders unless you have a specific backup plan. Check the current details in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide.
Choose a video profile the internet connection can sustain
For a fixed altar view or mostly static scene, reliability matters more than a high resolution that the connection cannot hold. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. These are YouTube-published settings, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder will be stable. See YouTube’s recommended encoder settings.
- Start at 720p30 if the upload connection is modest or shared; move to 1080p30 only after testing stability.
- Set the encoder to H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval where those options are available.
- Test upload speed on the actual connection, preferably at the time of day the stream will run. Shared use can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder.
- Keep at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. For example, a 5 Mbps stream calls for at least 6.25 Mbps of available upload capacity before accounting for other network use.
- Run a full audio-and-video test instead of relying only on a speed-test result.
YouTube states that the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room in its streaming tips.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Set up the encoder and scene in advance, then check the incoming signal in Live Control Room before going public.
- Confirm that the stream appears on both the channel and its watch page. Open the watch page on a phone to verify that viewers can access it.
- Listen for clipped, quiet, distorted, or unbalanced singing and instruments; check the picture and overlays as well as the encoder’s status.
- If you plan to keep a local recording, start it and confirm the file is growing and has usable audio and video.
- Assign a named volunteer to check Live Control Room and the watch page during the broadcast, especially at handoffs or after any interruption.
YouTube’s streaming checklist recommends checking the encoder, preview, watch page, mobile access, stream quality, and local archive. It also describes testing a configured backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network connection and checking whether the backup takes over. A backup is an optional reliability measure, not a requirement for a small mandali.
Plan stream handoffs and keep the recordings you need
YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours. If a stream runs longer than 12 hours, it may not be captured at all, so a continuous 24/7 schedule should not depend on one unbroken YouTube replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See Archive live streams.
- Decide whether a YouTube replay is important for each session.
- If it is, schedule a stop and restart before the stream reaches 12 hours, and have someone confirm that the new stream is live after the handoff.
- Record locally if the mandali needs a dependable copy, and verify the file rather than assuming the encoder saved it.
- Tell viewers how to find the next session if a handoff creates a new watch-page link.
YouTube’s help page says DVR may be limited on long streams. A YouTube Blog post dated August 12, 2026 says public archived livestreams can contribute qualified watch hours toward YouTube Partner Program eligibility, while streams that are not archived do not count for that metric. Clear rights for bhajans, recordings, and replays
Do not assume a song or recording is free to broadcast because it is devotional, old, or commonly sung. Rights can differ by country and between a composition, an arrangement, and a particular recording. Confirm that the mandali has the permissions needed for the live performance and any replay or archive; when the country or repertoire is unclear, ask the relevant rights holders or a local adviser.

YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. Even when material is licensed, the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s copyright guidance is at Copyright issues with live streams; its terms require streamers to have necessary rights, including music licensing rights, and to follow applicable laws: YouTube Terms of Service.
- Keep a repertoire list, including the specific recordings or arrangements used.
- Record what permissions cover live broadcast and what permissions cover saved replays.
- Ask the rights owner whether Content ID allowlisting is needed for the channel.
- Do not rely on a stream test with one song as proof that every item in a longer playlist is cleared.
