To run educational videos as a continuous YouTube Live feed, create a stream in YouTube Studio, connect a software or hardware encoder with your stream URL and key, then test the feed and monitor it while it runs. Before setup, confirm your channel can livestream, choose sustainable video settings, clear the rights to every element, and decide how you will provide replays: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Choose a setup that matches your teaching and replay needs
YouTube’s encoder workflow suits a produced or prerecorded program, including one with overlays or external audio and video equipment. You can use software on an existing computer or a hardware encoder; YouTube associates professional-grade hardware encoders with higher-production events, but neither type is universally best. Choose based on the inputs and features you need, operator familiarity, and reliability you have tested.

Decide whether the priority is one continuous watch page or reliable on-demand access. A single long event can keep the feed continuous, but its archive is uncertain beyond YouTube’s 12-hour guidance. Shorter scheduled events align better with that guidance, at the cost of managing transitions and stream URLs. If replays matter, make local recordings and consider uploading recordings separately.
Check eligibility and content rights first
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned launch. See YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guidance.
- YouTube currently says streamers must be at least 16 years old. A livestream featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult may have live chat disabled or lose access to chat features.
- Clear the rights for the video, soundtrack, images, clips, and other material you broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to have necessary rights for live content on Google services, including relevant music licenses, and to comply with applicable laws. Educational purpose alone does not establish permission. Keep documentation for the territories and uses you intend, including any later archive.
Create the YouTube stream and connect your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream. The precise interface can change; YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the current workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in your encoder and do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. YouTube explains stream keys and related settings in Manage live stream settings.
- In the encoder’s service or stream configuration, select YouTube or enter the stream URL and key where requested. Use RTMPS if available; YouTube recommends it.
- Set resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio output. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for your exact combination. Its recommendations include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps; the keyframe interval should be two seconds and must not exceed four seconds.
- Start the encoder output without making the event public yet. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview, check stream health, and verify that the picture and sound are correct. Test representative motion and audio rather than relying on a static title card. Once ready, start the event and confirm it opens from both the channel and watch pages, including on a phone.
Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not guarantees of stability or universal minimums. For example, YouTube’s current recommendations for 1080p at 30 fps are 14 Mbps with H.264 and 10 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Check the official table for other combinations rather than applying either example to a different output.

Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload capacity free. If you configure a primary and backup encoder, budget for both streams as well as that headroom; the primary plus backup bitrate and spare capacity should fit the available upload bandwidth. A connection that barely meets the video bitrate on a speed test has little room for normal variation. YouTube’s network streaming tips explain the bandwidth considerations.
Plan monitoring, backups, and power
A continuous broadcast needs an operator plan, not just a successful launch. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder and keeping a local archive. Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirm that the player switches over as intended. A second encoder helps with encoder failure, but does not fix a shared internet outage; it also increases bandwidth needs.

- Keep a local recording and check that its file continues to grow and remains valid.
- Monitor stream health, picture, and audio. Periodically open the live event from the channel and watch pages, including on mobile.
- Decide who responds if the feed fails, how they will restart or switch encoders, and how viewers will be directed to a new event if a new stream URL is needed. YouTube’s guidance supports testing and monitoring; it does not promise automatic recovery from every disconnection.
- A UPS can reduce interruption risk from a power cut to the computer or router. It cannot protect against network, encoder, or YouTube platform failures, and YouTube does not specifically prescribe one.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and recommends keeping a local archive. Its archive guidance warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A single uninterrupted 24-hour event therefore should not be treated as a dependable source for a complete YouTube replay.

If viewers need on-demand lessons, record locally and verify the files, or divide the broadcast into shorter events and upload the recordings separately. Shorter events can mean transitions, restart planning, and changes to the event URL, so explain those to viewers. YouTube’s encoder setup and archive pages describe the relevant options; they do not guarantee that a long broadcast will produce a complete replay.
Troubleshoot common livestream problems
- No preview appears: Confirm the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key for the selected event, and check its output status. Verify the key is current and entered correctly. YouTube lists format and health errors in its live streaming error messages.
- Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable health: Check upload speed and encoder/network load. Lower the bitrate or output resolution/frame rate to a setting the connection sustains, preserve the recommended upload headroom, and confirm that a backup stream is included in the capacity plan.
- Audio or video is missing or wrong: Check the encoder’s selected input, audio source, output format, and preview before starting the public event. Test with representative content and listen on the watch page, not only through the encoder’s local monitor.
- The backup does not take over: Rehearse the failure mode and confirm the backup is configured for the correct stream and has enough bandwidth. A test on the same failed network will not prove resilience to a network outage.
- The replay is incomplete or absent: Do not assume an event longer than 12 hours will be archived. Check the local recording, and use shorter broadcasts or separate on-demand uploads when a complete replay is essential.
