You can run a 24/7 YouTube livestream with an encoder or a cloud service, but a continuous broadcast alone does not add a donate button. To collect donations through YouTube Giving, your channel and the beneficiary nonprofit must each be eligible, and you must create a fundraiser and attach the scheduled livestream. Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit: a stream that runs longer may not be captured, so make a separate local recording if a replay matters.
Check YouTube Giving eligibility first
Check the channel and the nonprofit separately before buying equipment or scheduling a campaign. Eligibility for the creator does not make every charity selectable, and a charity’s eligibility does not make every channel eligible.

Channel requirements
YouTube’s published creator requirements say the channel must be based in a location where YouTube Giving is available, have at least 10,000 subscribers, participate in the YouTube Partner Program, and not be designated as made for kids. YouTube notes that some channels may see access outside these criteria; the practical check is whether Giving is available in your channel’s YouTube Studio. Availability varies by country or region, so confirm it in your account rather than assuming it from the nonprofit’s location. See YouTube Giving FAQs.

YouTube’s nonprofit FAQ says an eligible recipient must be a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) public charity, opt into online fundraising through GuideStar, and meet Google for Nonprofits and YouTube policy requirements. A creator must request a nonprofit if it is not available in the selection tool; review may take up to five business days. These requirements mean YouTube Giving is not a universal donation option for nonprofits based outside the United States. Check the current rules and selection workflow in the YouTube Giving FAQs.

Choose how to keep the broadcast running
For a modest, actively operated setup, YouTube’s encoder workflow lets you send video and audio from compatible streaming software. A hardware encoder is optional: YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production streams, but supports software encoders too. Consider hardware when production complexity, reliability needs, or separating the broadcast from a staff computer justifies its added equipment and operating burden. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains its workflow and links to a verified-encoder directory; inclusion in that directory is not an uptime guarantee or endorsement.
For prerecorded programming that should continue while the organization’s computers are off, a cloud service is another route. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud tool for continuous 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. Treat that listing as a vendor description, not a guarantee. Before choosing any service, check current compatibility, pricing, terms, recovery options, monitoring, rights controls, and whether the team can operate it.
Activate YouTube Live before launch day
Before broadcasting, verify the channel and check that it has no livestream restriction. YouTube says the channel must have no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and first-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours. Start early enough to resolve activation or access issues. Follow YouTube’s live streaming requirements and setup guidance.

Set up and test an encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule the stream. Use Live Control Room to create the event and set its visibility and schedule. For the encoder workflow, follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Connect the encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Copy the values shown for the event into the corresponding encoder fields. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it could send a broadcast to the channel. Do not share it in public documents, chat, or recordings.
- Choose settings that your source and connection can sustain. Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrate, and keyframe interval according to the encoder and YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen stream format. The cited guidance does not establish one bitrate or resolution suitable for every source, so test the actual content and connection rather than assuming a single preset will work.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate; include both primary and backup streams in the total where applicable. Its streaming tips explain the recommendation.
- Preview before going public. Test privately or unlisted, then check the Live Control Room preview, sound, picture, public watch page, and mobile playback. If using a backup encoder, test failover before launch.
Create a fundraiser and attach the scheduled stream
Going live does not by itself enable YouTube Giving. You must publish a fundraiser and add the scheduled livestream to it. In YouTube Studio, go to Earn > Giving, choose Create a fundraiser, select an eligible nonprofit or request one, enter the fundraiser title and description, set any optional collaborators, goal, or duration, add the scheduled livestream, and publish. You can also start the workflow from Live Control Room’s advanced settings. The exact controls shown depend on the channel’s access and current Studio interface; consult Google for Nonprofits’ fundraiser setup steps.
The donate button appears after the fundraiser’s start date, on the video watch page or in live chat, as applicable. If live chat is enabled, YouTube Giving’s Live Chat Donations button appears in chat; if chat is disabled, the donate button can appear next to or below the stream. The Live Control Room Viewer Activity Widget can display donations in real time.
Know what changes when donations are enabled
- YouTube says adding a fundraiser does not affect ads.
- On streams using Live Chat Donations, Super Chat and Super Stickers are disabled, and members-only live chat cannot be used with the donate button.
- Viewers donate through the button and may choose whether to display their username in chat.
YouTube says it pays transaction fees so that 100% of an eligible contribution goes to the nonprofit. Google works with Network for Good to collect and distribute donations; Network for Good has legal control of donations once collected. YouTube says distributions are typically monthly, while totals under $10 are distributed annually. These are YouTube’s stated handling arrangements, not a guarantee about tax treatment or how the nonprofit ultimately uses funds. See the YouTube Giving FAQs.

Plan for continuous operation, moderation, and replays
Do not rely on a 24-hour YouTube replay
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, record a separate local copy and consider dividing the broadcast into planned sessions shorter than 12 hours. Shorter sessions are a planning option, not a guarantee that every segment will archive or that continuity will be unaffected. YouTube recommends a local archive as backup; see Archive live streams.
Assign people and recovery responsibilities
A 24/7 stream still needs an operating plan. Decide who can access the channel and encoder, who monitors picture and audio, who responds to an outage, and who moderates chat. Test the exact encoder, stream settings, and backup path before launch. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish an uptime guarantee for a particular setup, so plan for interruptions rather than treating continuous operation as assured.
Clear rights for every item in the playlist
Make sure the nonprofit owns or has permission to livestream and replay every video, image, audio track, and other item in the program. A recording being available to the organization does not by itself establish rights for continuous rebroadcast. Keep the stream within YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and avoid third-party music or other material unless the organization has the required rights for both livestreaming and any replay.

Troubleshoot common launch problems
- Live streaming is not available yet: Check channel verification and restrictions, then allow for initial activation, which can take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm that you used the stream URL and key for the intended event, that the key was copied correctly, and that the encoder is configured for the chosen stream. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
- The preview stutters or drops frames: Compare the total outgoing bitrate with available upload capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom. Test the exact settings and connection, including any backup stream.
- The donate button is missing: Confirm that the channel has YouTube Giving access, the fundraiser is published, the scheduled livestream was added to it, and the fundraiser start date has passed. A live broadcast by itself does not add the control.
- The nonprofit cannot be selected: Check whether it meets YouTube’s recipient requirements and submit a request if the Studio workflow offers one. YouTube says review may take up to five business days.
- The stream has no automatic replay: Check its duration. YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured; maintain a separate local recording if the replay is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel using prerecorded programming, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Review the service at StreamNeo, then start the free day.
Budget for the setup you will actually operate
Costs depend on the broadcast method and the equipment or service your organization chooses. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not establish a required encoder model, specification, or price. For any option, compare compatibility with the content source, whether a local computer must stay on, recovery and monitoring provisions, rights and playlist controls, and the team’s capacity to operate it. For an always-on cloud option, StreamNeo’s monthly charge is $9.99 per month; check its current plan details before signing up.
