You can build a kids’ story broadcast in OBS with separate welcome, story, break, and closing scenes, then send it to YouTube Live Control Room using your stream URL and stream key. OBS can loop a file or a playlist and apply Fade or Cut transitions, but neither OBS’s documented playback controls nor YouTube’s setup guidance establishes that one session will run uninterrupted for 24 hours. Treat the setup below as the broadcast workflow, then plan to monitor and recover it.
Before you build the stream
Check that the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-stream guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person going live must be at least 16. Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio before spending time on scene design.

Clear rights to every part of the program
Check the rights for the exact story text, translation, illustrations, music, and narration recording you plan to use. Permission for one edition, language, image, or recording does not automatically establish permission for another or for every territory where viewers may watch. If you do not control the rights or have permission, do not include that material in the stream.
Decide how you will handle Made for Kids settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, set the audience accurately. YouTube says creators should not rely on machine-learning detection to decide whether content is made for kids. A kids’ story channel may need the Made for Kids designation, depending on its content and intended audience. That choice affects available features and monetization; it is not merely a design setting.

Build an OBS scene collection for the story
Use scenes to control what viewers see at each point in the program. A simple starting collection is:
- Welcome: a title card and any opening audio you have rights to use.
- Story: the story video, images, or other presentation sources, with narration or soundtrack audio.
- Break: a calm holding screen for planned pauses or between stories.
- Closing: an end card or final image.
In OBS, create the scenes in the Scenes panel, then add the appropriate image, text, or media sources in the Sources panel. Arrange and size sources in the preview, and check that the intended audio source is present and audible. These are example scene names, not a tested channel template; adapt them to the material and pacing you have rights to broadcast.
Choose and time scene transitions
OBS includes Cut and Fade transitions. Select the transition in the transition controls and set its duration there. A Cut switches immediately; a Fade blends between the outgoing and incoming scenes over the selected duration. Use OBS Studio Mode if you want to prepare or edit the next scene in Preview before sending it to the live Program output. Before going live, switch through every scene and confirm that the transition does not reveal an unintended blank screen, misplaced source, or abrupt audio change.

Set up looping playback
For a single story file
Add an OBS Media Source for the local file and enable its Loop option. Check the source from beginning to end, including the point where it returns to the start. Looping a file is not proof of gap-free playback or a guarantee that an OBS session will stay connected all day.
For a playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist and offers a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed for this source. Test the order, playback, audio, and transitions between playlist entries before using it in a public broadcast. OBS documents the playback controls, but does not promise uninterrupted 24-hour operation.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- Create or schedule the broadcast: in YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
- Copy the encoder details: in Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a secret credential: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. Do not show it in a screen capture or share it publicly.
- Enter them in OBS: open OBS Settings > Stream and enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. Do not paste the key into a public scene, overlay, or message.
- Start a test feed: start streaming from OBS and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate.
- Go live only after checking the output: confirm that the picture, story audio, scene transitions, and audience setting are correct before starting the public broadcast.
Choose video and audio settings for a stable feed
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds; it recommends RTMPS where supported. Use a video codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your encoder and connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings page provides bitrate guidance by output format, so consult its current table for the exact resolution and frame rate you choose rather than assuming the highest setting is the safest.

Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static title card. Compare the selected bitrate with the upload capacity your connection can reliably maintain, leaving room for normal fluctuations. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicator and preview as well as the sound and picture in OBS. A good result in a short test is useful, but it does not certify a full-day run.

A scene collection and loop control determine what OBS plays; they do not by themselves provide a continuity plan. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a single broadcast behaves at or beyond 12 hours, nor does the encoder setup guidance certify an uninterrupted 24-hour session. Do not advertise a tested 24/7 uptime or assume a single OBS session will run indefinitely on the basis of these setup steps.
For a continuous channel, arrange for someone to monitor the broadcast and respond if the computer, connection, OBS, or YouTube feed stops. Decide who can inspect the preview and stream health, restart the encoder or broadcast when needed, and verify that the correct scene and audience setting return. Test your actual schedule and recovery process before relying on it. If no one can supervise a local setup, consider whether a cloud playback workflow better fits the operational need.

Made for Kids: features and monetization to expect
When a live stream is designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat, live chat donations, Super Chat, and personalized ads; contextual ads may appear. Other listed restrictions include comments, cards and end screens, notifications, and some channel features. Do not build the program around live chat participation or promise personalized-ad revenue for a stream with this designation. Check YouTube’s current Made for Kids guidance for the full feature list.
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: check that the stream URL and stream key in OBS match the current broadcast in Live Control Room. If the key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS with the new key.
- The preview appears but stream health is poor: lower the output demand or choose a bitrate that fits the connection’s reliable upload capacity, then test again. Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- The story has no sound or sounds wrong: check the Media Source or VLC source’s playback and audio, the OBS audio meters, and the preview during a representative passage. Recheck at the playlist or file loop boundary.
- A playlist item does not play: confirm VLC is installed and that the VLC Video source points to the intended playlist. Test each item and the loop behavior in OBS before the live run.
- A transition reveals the wrong image or a blank scene: inspect source visibility and placement in both scenes, then preview the transition in Studio Mode before sending it to Program.
- The broadcast stops during a long run: check OBS, the computer, the internet connection, and Live Control Room’s stream health, then follow your recovery plan. The cited OBS and YouTube setup guidance does not guarantee autonomous recovery or uninterrupted 24-hour operation.
