You can run a 24/7 YouTube channel with seasonal programming, but YouTube does not document a built-in setting that automatically swaps the content playing in a continuous live stream by season. YouTube playlists organize videos for viewers; a separate encoder or hosted playout service supplies and schedules the live feed. Set up the stream destination in YouTube Studio, build seasonal rotations in your playout workflow, and test the changeover before relying on it.
Choose how the 24/7 live feed will run
A continuous prerecorded broadcast needs a source that keeps sending video to YouTube. Choose between a local encoder you operate and a hosted service that handles playout in the cloud. The best fit depends on whether you can keep a computer and connection running, how you will control seasonal transitions, and who will monitor failures.

| Approach | Who handles playout and connection | Seasonal scheduling and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Local software or hardware encoder | You operate the encoder and provide its internet connection and upload bandwidth. | You control media order and transitions in your encoder workflow. YouTube’s reviewed playlist guidance does not document an automatic seasonal switch for a live feed. |
| Hosted continuous-streaming service | The service handles playout from uploaded or stored media; check its current operational and plan terms. | Features and duration limits vary. OneStream Live’s Help Center says its 24/7 YouTube feature requires an Enterprise plan and has a maximum duration of 30 days; reconfirm those terms before depending on it. |
YouTube describes encoder streaming as an option for productions that use overlays, gameplay, or audio equipment, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. A dedicated hardware encoder is not required for every stream: YouTube also documents software encoding. [YouTube encoder guidance] [YouTube streaming tips]

Check channel eligibility and content rights first
Confirm live streaming is available
Verify the channel and enable live streaming before planning a launch. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says the channel must have had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; its current getting-started guidance also sets a minimum creator age of 16. A creator under a current live-stream restriction cannot use another channel to evade it. Check the current live-streaming eligibility guidance, getting-started requirements, and live-streaming restrictions before scheduling.
Clear every item for worldwide rebroadcast
Audit the rights for every video and every music track in the rotation, including rights needed for worldwide livestreaming and relevant music licensing. Public availability on YouTube does not mean a video or track is cleared for rebroadcast. YouTube’s terms place responsibility on the provider to have the rights needed to exploit live content worldwide, including applicable rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable terms.

Create the YouTube live destination and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go Live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or reuse settings, then enter its title, description, privacy, audience setting, and other relevant metadata. Schedule it in advance if you want to promote an upcoming broadcast. YouTube says a scheduled stream may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds and let viewers opt into a notification. See encoder setup and stream settings.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s destination settings. The key is a credential that lets the encoder send a feed YouTube can accept, so treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it unnecessarily.
- If you believe the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder before reconnecting. A changed key will not work with an encoder still configured with the old one.
- Connect the encoder and preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. Check the audio and video there, not just in the encoder’s local preview.
Build separate seasonal playlists and a live playout calendar
Use YouTube playlists for channel organization
Create viewer-facing playlists for each season, theme, or program collection in YouTube. Give each a clear title and description, choose its visibility, and arrange its videos using YouTube Studio’s manual drag-and-drop ordering. YouTube documents playlist creation and reordering, but those controls organize channel videos; they are not documented as a control for automatically changing the media in a continuous live feed. See playlist management and playlist management in YouTube Studio.
Schedule the actual live rotation in the playout system
Put the files and their playback order into the encoder or hosted playout service that supplies the live feed. Create named seasonal blocks and record the transition details so the change is an operational task rather than an assumption about YouTube playlist behavior:

- The date and time of the seasonal change, including the time zone.
- The media order, and whether items repeat in order or shuffle.
- What should play if an item is unavailable or a scheduled block ends unexpectedly.
- Who is responsible for applying the change and checking that the new block is live.
For scheduled video publishing, YouTube lets you choose when an individual upload becomes public, including the date, time, and time zone. That schedules a video’s publication; it is not documented as a way to switch the live playout playlist. See scheduled video publishing.
Set bandwidth, test, and launch
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% room beyond the total stream bitrate and say to account for primary plus backup plus 20% when planning outbound bandwidth. The connection must have enough upload capacity for the combined outgoing streams, not merely the nominal bitrate of one encoder. These are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026, not a promise of uninterrupted operation. See YouTube streaming tips.
- Prepare early. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder livestream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These recommendations apply to scheduled encoder events; they do not guarantee flawless 24/7 uptime. See live-streaming tips.
- Preview and verify playback. In Live Control Room, confirm that the expected program is arriving. Open the watch page and test playback on mobile as well as the device used to monitor the encoder. Check audio and video, including the first seasonal item and any planned transition.
- Test recovery and failover. If you have a backup encoder or network path, test it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network in a controlled test. Confirm that the backup can take over and that the feed resumes as expected; do not assume failover works because it is configured.
- Monitor the running stream. Check the feed periodically and assign responsibility for responding to a lost connection, incorrect playlist, or audio problem. A local encoder workflow depends on the encoder and its connection continuing to operate.
Promote and archive the broadcast carefully
Share the scheduled stream’s watch page in advance; viewers may see the event as upcoming and opt into a reminder. YouTube recommends organizing live archives and highlight clips into playlists. Its encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will produce a single archive covering its entire run, so plan your own recording and archive workflow if a complete copy matters. See promoting your live stream and encoder setup and archiving.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream. | Live streaming is not enabled, the channel does not meet current eligibility requirements, or the channel has a restriction. | Check verification and live-streaming status in YouTube Studio and review YouTube’s eligibility, getting-started, and restriction guidance. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. | The encoder has the wrong stream URL or key, or the key was reset. | Compare the encoder destination with the current Live Control Room details. If the key may be exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The video stutters or disconnects. | Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient or unstable for the outgoing bitrate, especially with a backup stream also sending. | Measure the available upload capacity, lower the outgoing load if necessary, and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends, including primary and backup streams in the calculation. |
| The new season does not appear in the live feed. | The public YouTube playlist may have been updated while the encoder or hosted playout schedule was not. | Check the media order and calendar in the system actually sending the live feed, then verify the incoming program in Live Control Room. |
| Music or a video triggers a rights concern. | Public access or prior availability does not establish permission for worldwide livestream rebroadcast. | Remove or replace the item until you have confirmed the necessary video and music rights for the intended use and territory. |
| You cannot rely on one archive for the whole 24/7 run. | YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours and does not establish a single archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. | Plan a separate recording and archive process, or break the schedule into planned sessions if that fits your operation. |
