To run an acoustic guitar radio stream on YouTube around the clock with FFmpeg, you need music cleared for live use, a continuous audio-and-video input, an FFmpeg publishing command, and a computer or server that stays online with a process supervisor to restart failures. Configure YouTube’s Live Control Room, publish over RTMPS with H.264 video and AAC audio, then test and monitor the stream before relying on it unattended.
What you need before starting
- Audio: original recordings or music whose rights expressly cover the intended live stream, platform, territories, and duration.
- A visual: a still image, cover art, or looping scene. YouTube Live expects an audio-video stream, so keep video present even if the channel is primarily a radio experience.
- A publishing host: an always-on computer or remote VPS with FFmpeg installed and enough sustained upload capacity for the chosen video bitrate.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled: use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or select a stream and obtain its server URL and stream key.
- A supervisor and logs: a service manager such as systemd can launch FFmpeg at boot and restart it if the process exits.
FFmpeg is the encoder and publisher; it does not make a home computer, network connection, or process failure-proof by itself.

Clear the music rights first
YouTube’s livestream terms say a streamer represents that they have all necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other participants. The permissions required in practice depend on the rights and agreements covering the music and where the stream is available. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions, keep license records, and ask whether the rights owner must allowlist your channel in Content ID.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning or placeholder; if it is not resolved, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license alone may not prevent a match from stopping the broadcast: YouTube notes that a rights owner may need to add the channel to its allowlist. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Prepare continuous audio and video
Choose and check the audio
Arrange recordings as a playlist or a continuous audio source, and normalize formats or sample rates where needed for consistent playback. Listen through transitions and loop boundaries: a file that ends cleanly on its own can still produce an audible gap or jump when repeated. Test the actual playlist rather than assuming its loop point is seamless.
Build a simple video layer
Use a horizontal image or a looped visual that you have permission to use. Pick a resolution and frame rate that suit the visual and your available upload bandwidth; a static artwork stream does not need motion-heavy footage. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate, but it does not specify a special minimum resolution for a static acoustic-radio image. Choose a sustained bitrate your host can reliably upload, with room for network variation.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast and its stream configuration. Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- Protect the stream key. It authorizes publishing to your channel. Do not include it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or shared configuration. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the publisher.
- Choose RTMPS for the usual FFmpeg workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. RTMP/RTMPS is the straightforward path for standard H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewers.
- Set H.264 video and AAC stereo audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for audio. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Select the video bitrate from YouTube’s current range for your output resolution and frame rate, and ensure your sustained upstream can carry it.
- Confirm the actual output. Check FFmpeg’s output settings and YouTube Studio’s current encoder guidance, including resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codecs, and keyframes. Recommendations can vary with resolution and frame rate; do not treat one bitrate as universal.
For a specialised workflow, YouTube also supports HLS ingestion, but it requires a supported configuration including HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist. Because HLS sends media in segments, YouTube says it has higher latency. For an ordinary continuous acoustic radio stream, prefer RTMP/RTMPS unless you have a specific HLS requirement. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements and its encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Run FFmpeg as a managed, continuous process
A common setup is an always-on computer or remote VPS running FFmpeg under a service manager. Configure the supervisor to launch the publisher at boot, restart it after an unexpected exit, and retain logs for diagnosis. This is an implementation approach, not a YouTube requirement.
The exact FFmpeg command depends on how your audio playlist and visual source are provided, and on the installed FFmpeg build. Build the command around these requirements rather than copying a command with unverified input options:

- Read a continuous audio source and a stable video source, and map both into the output so the stream does not become audio-only.
- Encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC stereo, using the bitrate, sample rate, keyframe interval, and CBR settings described above.
- Publish to the YouTube ingest URL with the stream key kept private.
- Use the playlist or input’s appropriate repeat mechanism, and test that the source does not end unexpectedly.
- Configure the service supervisor to restart the overall FFmpeg process after failure, with sensible retry timing and persistent logs.
FFmpeg’s protocol options include reconnect behavior for network errors and EOF, but their applicability depends on the input protocol and build. Input reconnection is not the same as restarting the output publisher. Review the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the relevant input protocol and retry controls, and use the service manager for whole-process recovery.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test, launch, and monitor
- Start with a private or unlisted test using the real playlist, visual, encoder settings, and expected duration.
- Check audio levels and stereo playback, aspect ratio, frame stability, loop seams, encoding load, and whether the host has upload headroom.
- Stop or simulate a process failure in a controlled test and verify that the supervisor restarts FFmpeg and that YouTube receives the stream again.
- While the test is live, watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages. Resolve warnings before promoting the radio stream.
- After launch, keep logs and periodically check that the visual and audio continue, the playlist has not reached an unintended end, and the stream remains healthy.
YouTube’s encoder guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast; its encoder guidance also covers stream health and monitoring.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the ingest URL and current stream key match the selected stream in Live Control Room, that the key has not been reset, and that the host can reach the ingest endpoint.
- Stream health warns about bitrate or connection: compare the actual output with YouTube’s current bitrate range for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Lower the video bitrate if the host cannot sustain it, and leave bandwidth headroom for fluctuations.
- Audio plays but the picture is missing: verify that FFmpeg maps a video source and continues outputting video frames. A still image is suitable, but the output still needs a video track.
- Playback stops when a file ends: check the playlist’s repeat behavior and its source handling. A process supervisor can restart a failed publisher, but it cannot fix a playlist that repeatedly exits because its input has ended.
- FFmpeg exits and stays down: inspect the service logs and supervisor configuration. Confirm the service starts at boot, restarts on failure, and has appropriate retry behavior; distinguish an input reconnect option from a whole-process restart.
- YouTube interrupts the live stream: read Studio’s message and investigate potential Content ID matches. If the music is licensed, contact the rights owner about allowlisting the channel; permission and platform matching are separate operational issues.
- Loops have clicks, gaps, or abrupt changes: edit or re-render the audio sequence, then test the precise transition in the live playlist before leaving it unattended.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain an always-on host and FFmpeg process yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
Monetization is a separate review
Having permission to stream music does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policy reviews reused content at the channel level and says reused-content issues can apply even when a creator has permission. Repeated or minimally transformed third-party material may therefore affect channel eligibility independently of copyright permission. Check YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
