YouTube Studio creates the live broadcast; it does not, by itself, loop a lecture file. To stream a recorded lecture continuously, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then send it a feed from streaming software or a hardware encoder that can repeat the video. Test the full setup before leaving it unattended. Because a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all, keep a separate recording and upload an on-demand copy if viewers need reliable replay.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s general guidance says streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A finished lecture video and a software or hardware encoder that supports YouTube Live and can loop local prerecorded media. The looping control is specific to the encoder or playback tool; YouTube Studio’s encoder workflow does not establish a file-looping procedure.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream, plus a plan for local recording and recovery if the encoder or connection fails.
- Permission to stream and archive every element in the lecture, including music, images, slides, and video clips.
When choosing an encoder, confirm its current documentation for YouTube compatibility, continuous looping, automatic restart or failover, local recording, and what equipment must remain powered. Software and dedicated hardware are both possible encoder categories, but looping and recovery capabilities vary by product.
Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the Stream workflow and scheduling options; interface labels can change.
- Create or schedule a stream. In the Stream workflow, enter the title, description, visibility, and other event details. If you want a shareable event page in advance, use the Live Control Room’s Manage workflow to schedule the stream.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields, or use the encoder’s YouTube integration if it offers one. Treat the stream key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Configure playback in the encoder. Select the finished lecture file and enable continuous repeat or looping in the encoder or playback tool’s own settings. Confirm that it can restart playback cleanly without a long blank interval. Do not assume the YouTube Studio page will repeat an uploaded video.
- Send a test feed and inspect the preview. Start the encoder, wait for the Live Control Room preview, and verify the picture, audio, event details, and intended privacy setting before starting the public broadcast.
Test the full setup before leaving it running
Run a private or unlisted test first. Watch at least one complete loop boundary, check that the audio remains audible, and open the watch page on both a phone and a computer. If you have enabled local recording, confirm that the file is being written and continues to grow. If your setup relies on automatic restart, a backup feed, or encoder failover, test that failure path rather than assuming it will work.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend advance encoder setup, starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing failover, confirming event access, and monitoring audio and video quality. Those are event-preparation recommendations, not a guarantee of uptime for a permanent installation.

Plan upload capacity and network reliability
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% more upload bandwidth available than the stream’s total bitrate. That is headroom above the stream bitrate, not an additional video-quality setting. Shared networks can leave less capacity available than a speed test suggests, and a connectivity disruption can break the stream. Prefer a reliable connection, avoid saturating it with other uploads, and monitor the feed after launch. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its network and monitoring guidance.
Do not rely on YouTube for one complete 24/7 replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore is not a dependable single archive of the lecture. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Keep a local recording and publish a separate on-demand upload when a reliable replay matters. You can instead schedule shorter broadcasts, but each end and restart creates a transition that someone must manage; shorter segments do not remove the need to keep a separate copy if the archive is important.
Check copyright, privacy, and moderation
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. If it identifies such content, it may replace the live feed with a placeholder; continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. YouTube’s live terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights for the live stream and its archive, including music rights. Before going live, check permissions for all lecture materials and arrange any required Content ID allowlisting. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and its livestream terms and conditions.

Choose the intended visibility setting, remove private information from slides, and plan moderation if live chat is enabled. A lecture intended for public access can still expose personal details through on-screen material or chat.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in the Live Control Room | The encoder is not connected to the correct YouTube endpoint, or the stream key is incorrect. | Confirm the server URL and key match the current stream in YouTube Studio, then restart the encoder connection. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The lecture plays once and stops | Looping is not enabled in the chosen encoder or playback tool. | Check that tool’s current instructions for repeat playback and verify a full loop during a test. |
| Video or audio becomes unstable | Upload capacity may be insufficient or competing traffic may be using the connection. | Leave YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% upload-bandwidth margin beyond total stream bitrate, reduce competing network use, and monitor the encoder and Live Control Room. |
| The feed stops after an interruption | The encoder, playback process, device, or network may not have restarted automatically. | Test restart and failover behavior in advance; confirm which part of the chain must be restarted manually. |
| There is no complete replay afterward | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | Use the local recording or a separate on-demand upload; do not depend on a 24/7 stream becoming a complete archive. |
| The live feed is replaced or interrupted | YouTube may have detected third-party content or the stream may have encountered another platform or connection issue. | Check rights and any required allowlisting for lecture materials, then inspect Live Control Room status and the encoder/network connection. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want an encoder device and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the lecture, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. It does not stream from a camera.
