To stream recorded college lectures on YouTube around the clock, enable live streaming on a verified channel, create a stream in YouTube Studio, and connect an encoder or cloud playout service using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Feed it a continuous playlist, test the public viewing path, and monitor the broadcast. Before going public, confirm the college has the rights to the recordings and every embedded image, song, clip, or other work.
Before you set up the stream
Enable YouTube Live early
The channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned launch. YouTube’s current guidance is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Get started with live streaming.
Decide who will operate the broadcast
A 24/7 stream needs a continuous playout source: encoder software on a computer, a hardware encoder, or a cloud service that plays prerecorded videos. Choose based on who will maintain the playlist, watch for failures, restart the feed, and manage access to the stream key. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; being listed is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Check permissions before making lectures public
A public YouTube stream is not automatically covered by the fact that a recording was made for teaching. India’s Copyright Act, 1957 defines communication to the public broadly, including making a work or performance available to be seen or heard. The Act contains limited educational exceptions, including certain uses in the course of instruction and certain communications within an educational institution to a limited, institution-connected audience. Those provisions should not be treated as blanket permission for an unrestricted public stream or for third-party material embedded in a lecture.

Confirm ownership, employment terms, assignments, and institutional agreements for the recordings. Obtain permission or ask the college’s legal office about third-party music, film clips, images, and textbook pages. Section 17(cc) addresses first ownership of copyright in an address or speech delivered in public; the lecturer’s employment or the venue alone does not settle every ownership question. The answer depends on the circumstances and relevant agreements.

DIY setup: connect an encoder and playlist
1. Create the YouTube stream

Sign in to the college’s YouTube channel and open Create → Go Live to enter Live Control Room.

Create or configure the stream, then copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings.

Keep the stream key private as you would a password. Limit who can access it, and reset it if it is exposed.

YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video to a digital format for streaming. Its setup guidance is available at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
2. Configure continuous playback
Load the authorized lecture recordings into a playlist or playout schedule that the encoder can repeat without operator intervention. Decide the order, whether lectures repeat in the same sequence, and how viewers will know what is currently playing. Use an accurate title, description, and schedule; label the feed clearly as prerecorded and list the lecture sequence where practical.
There is no single bitrate or resolution setting that fits every recording and connection. Match the encoder output to the source and use YouTube’s current recommended encoder settings rather than assuming a setting from an older guide applies to every format. Avoid changing output settings midstream without testing: a resolution or bitrate the upload connection cannot sustain can cause buffering or dropped frames.

Measure outbound internet capacity where the encoder will run and at the time it will run. Shared campus networks may leave less bandwidth available than a speed test at another time suggests.

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Treat this as a platform recommendation, not a guarantee against network interruptions.

For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand so you can check readiness. Preview the signal in Live Control Room before making it public.

Watch the public channel and watch page as a viewer would. Check audio, picture, lecture order, and whether the local recording or archive you expect is actually being created.

4. Plan for archives and interruptions
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will appear as a single replay; check what YouTube Studio records and make a separate archive plan if individual lectures need to remain available.
A network outage, computer restart, software failure, or power cut can interrupt an on-premises encoder. Decide who will receive alerts, how the playlist will resume, and how to verify that the public stream has returned. Test these recovery steps before relying on the feed for unattended operation.

DIY encoder or cloud playout?
Compare the options against the people and infrastructure the college can actually provide. A computer or hardware encoder offers direct control, but the institution must operate and monitor it. Cloud playout avoids relying on a local computer remaining on, but service terms, playlist controls, recovery, support, geographic availability, and current pricing should be checked with the provider.

Do not assume a loop of existing lectures will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and address reused content that lacks significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. Its inauthentic-content policy also covers repetitive or mass-produced material; YouTube clarified that label in a July 15, 2025 update. Troubleshooting common problems
Live streaming is unavailable
Confirm the channel is verified, has no restriction in the past 90 days, and has completed first-time live activation. Activation can take up to 24 hours; try again after that interval if eligibility is satisfied.
The encoder connects but YouTube shows no picture or sound
Check that the encoder is sending to the correct server URL and that the selected input and playlist are active. Preview in Live Control Room, then check the public watch page. Confirm the source file itself has the expected audio and video.
The stream buffers or disconnects
Measure available upload bandwidth during the broadcast, accounting for other campus traffic. Compare it with the total stream bitrate and maintain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Investigate local Wi-Fi, network congestion, power, and encoder stability; a speed test from a different time or location may not reflect live conditions.
The stream key may have been exposed
Reset the key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new one. Remove access for people or systems that no longer need it.

A 24-hour stream has no single replay
Check the stream archive in YouTube Studio instead of assuming the full day was retained as one video. The encoder guide’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, so plan separate recordings or shorter scheduled sessions if a complete archive is required.
FAQs
Can students watch without a YouTube account?
The answer depends on the stream’s visibility and YouTube’s current viewing requirements. Test the actual public watch page in a signed-out browser before sharing it with students.
Does a public YouTube lecture stream count as classroom-only use?
Not automatically. A public, unrestricted broadcast differs from a communication limited to an institution-connected educational audience; the college should assess the actual audience and rights before streaming.
