If you want tear-free motion, enable Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC in both the monitor and the graphics driver. The exact 210Hz mode depends on your monitor model, resolution, input, cable, GPU, driver, and whether the advertised rate is native or overclocked.
What 210Hz changes in a gaming setup
Refresh rate is the number of times per second a display refreshes its image. At 210Hz, a compatible monitor can refresh approximately every 4.76 milliseconds, compared with about 6.94 milliseconds at 144Hz and 4.17 milliseconds at 240Hz. A higher refresh rate can make camera movement, scrolling, and mouse movement look smoother, provided the computer is rendering frames quickly enough.

Refresh rate is not the same as frame rate. Windows can be set to 210Hz while a game renders 90 frames per second, and the game will not become a 210-frame-per-second game simply because the display is configured that way. Actual performance depends on the game, graphics settings, processor, graphics card, and frame-rate cap. A 210Hz setting is a display capability; it does not create additional GPU performance.
Variable refresh rate (VRR) is a separate feature. It allows the monitor to adjust its refresh timing to the GPU’s changing frame rate, reducing or eliminating tearing and often reducing visible stutter when the equipment and software are compatible. AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing display refresh with the frame rate of compatible graphics cards to reduce artifacts such as input latency, tearing, and stuttering. VRR does not make an unsupported monitor operate at 210Hz.

Confirm the monitor’s exact 210Hz mode before changing settings
Find the full model number on the monitor label, its on-screen display, or the original documentation, and read that model’s manual and specification page. Do not assume that a monitor advertised as “210Hz” offers 210Hz at every resolution or through every input.
| Check | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Target resolution | Some refresh rates are available only at a particular resolution. | The resolution that supports 210Hz, such as 2560×1440. |
| Native or overclocked rate | An overclocked mode may require an OSD switch, a reboot, or a supported signal path. | Whether the manual labels 210Hz as native, OC, or overclocked. |
| Input limitation | HDMI and DisplayPort inputs can have different maximum combinations of resolution and refresh rate. | The specific port required for the desired mode. |
| OSD prerequisites | High-refresh, overclock, or performance modes may be disabled by default. | The exact menu name and whether a restart is required. |
| VRR range and certification | FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or G-SYNC compatibility can vary by input and refresh range. | The stated VRR technology and operating range. |
Example: an overclocked 210Hz specification
ASUS lists its TUF Gaming VG27AQ5AZ as a 27-inch, 2560×1440 display with a 210Hz (OC) mode. Its listed features include FreeSync Premium, VESA AdaptiveSync, DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, ELMB Sync, and Variable Overdrive. Those are specifications for that particular model, not proof that every 210Hz monitor, graphics card, or connection supports the same combination. If your model uses a different input or resolution, follow its own manual.
Connect the monitor to the graphics card correctly
Use an output on the dedicated graphics card rather than a motherboard video output when your system has a discrete GPU. Connect the cable to the input documented for your monitor’s target resolution and refresh rate, then select that input with the monitor’s source control.

- Use the port specified by the monitor manual. A monitor may expose 210Hz on DisplayPort but a lower maximum through one or more HDMI inputs, or the reverse.
- Use a cable appropriate to that port and signal. A cable that works at a lower refresh rate is not automatically adequate for every higher-resolution, high-refresh combination.
- Do not generalize a VRR requirement to all 210Hz connections. NVIDIA’s instructions for attempting Adaptive-Sync on an unvalidated display specify DisplayPort and say that some monitors require DisplayPort 1.2 or higher. AMD’s FreeSync instructions also call for DisplayPort 1.2 or higher where applicable. These are setup requirements for particular VRR configurations, not a universal statement that every 210Hz mode requires DisplayPort 1.2.
- Remove adapters while troubleshooting. A dock, converter, KVM, or passive adapter can impose its own bandwidth or feature limits. Test a direct GPU-to-monitor connection first.
If the manual specifies a particular DisplayPort or HDMI version, use that specification as the deciding factor. A replacement cable is justified only when the existing cable or intermediary cannot meet the documented signal requirements; buying a cable without checking the monitor and GPU specifications does not guarantee 210Hz.
Enable the monitor’s high-refresh or overclock option
Many displays expose their maximum advertised rate immediately. Others require an option in the on-screen display (OSD), especially when the maximum is marked “OC.” The names and menu locations differ by model.
- Press the monitor’s joystick or menu button to open the OSD.
- Look under menus such as Gaming, Display, System Setup, or Overclock for a high-refresh or overclock control.
- Enable only the mode documented for your exact model. If the monitor warns that the setting is overclocked, accept it only after reading the manual’s conditions.
- Apply the change and allow the monitor to reboot if requested. Some models do not expose the new timing until the restart completes.
- Leave the OSD open long enough to note whether Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, blur reduction, or other features are disabled when the high-refresh mode is selected.
An overclocked specification is not a guarantee that every unit, port, graphics card, or resolution combination will expose the mode. If the monitor becomes unstable, loses the signal, or returns to a lower rate, revert to the previous supported setting and consult the manual.

Select 210Hz in Windows
Windows determines the refresh-rate choices from the display’s reported capabilities and the current connection. Use this path to select and verify the setting:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Display.
- If more than one monitor is connected, click the monitor you want to configure.
- Open Advanced display.
- Check the displayed resolution and current refresh rate. Confirm that the selected display is the intended 210Hz monitor.
- Open the refresh-rate menu and choose 210Hz, or the highest rate shown for your intended resolution.
- Accept the confirmation prompt and leave the Advanced display page open briefly to verify that Windows reports both the expected resolution and refresh rate.
Windows may show an asterisk beside a rate that does not support the current resolution. Selecting such a rate can change the resolution to achieve that refresh rate. If 210Hz is available only with a different resolution, decide whether the higher rate or the intended image resolution is more important, then select the matching pair rather than assuming both can be used together.
Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate
Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) requires VRR support and a display capable of at least 120Hz. Microsoft notes that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games and suggests disabling DRR when a game appears capped unexpectedly. To test that possibility, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor, and change the dynamic-refresh option to a fixed refresh rate or turn DRR off if the control is present. Recheck the game’s behavior after applying the change.

Turn on VRR: FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or G-SYNC
VRR must be supported by the monitor, GPU, driver, connection, and application. Enable the monitor-side option first, then enable the corresponding control in the GPU software. Labels vary by monitor, so use the model manual when a control is missing or named differently.
AMD Radeon and FreeSync
- Open the monitor OSD and enable FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync.
- If AMD’s guidance applies to your model, disable Anti-Blur, since blur-reduction modes can conflict with VRR.
- Set DisplayPort to 1.2 or higher in the OSD when that option is available and the monitor documentation calls for it.
- Install or update the official Radeon driver for your supported GPU.
- Open Radeon settings, choose Display, and confirm that FreeSync is shown as On for the selected monitor.
AMD states that FreeSync can be delivered over DisplayPort and HDMI on certified displays, but the available range and features remain model-specific. FreeSync Premium and Premium Pro displays have mandatory Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) requirements. AMD’s explanatory example uses a 60–144Hz display and a 40 FPS game: LFC can repeat frames so the panel refreshes at 80Hz. That example explains the mechanism; it is not a performance measurement for your monitor.
NVIDIA GeForce and G-SYNC Compatible mode
- In the monitor OSD, enable Adaptive-Sync or the monitor’s equivalent.
- For NVIDIA’s procedure for trying VRR on an unvalidated display, connect a GeForce GTX 10-series or newer GPU by DisplayPort. NVIDIA says some monitors require DisplayPort 1.2 or higher.
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Select Set up G-SYNC.
- Enable G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible.
- Choose whether it should operate in full-screen mode only or in windowed and full-screen mode, then select the intended display.
- Click Apply and test a game that uses the selected monitor.
NVIDIA warns that an unvalidated display may work, work only partly, or fail when Adaptive-Sync is enabled manually. If you see flicker, black screens, dropouts, or an unstable image, disable the feature and return to a supported configuration instead of treating the failure as evidence that the monitor is defective.

Tune motion, HDR, and optional display features cautiously
There is no universal best setting for overdrive, blur reduction, HDR, or strobing on every 210Hz display. These controls can interact with refresh rate, VRR, brightness, and one another.
- Overdrive: Increase it only while watching for bright inverse trails or overshoot around moving objects. Use the model’s documented levels rather than assuming the strongest setting is best.
- Variable Overdrive: On the cited ASUS model, this feature dynamically changes overdrive as frame rates fluctuate while allowing the user to select an overall strength. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent test result.
- Blur reduction or strobing: These modes may require a fixed refresh rate and can disable VRR or reduce brightness. Check the OSD’s compatibility notes before combining them.
- HDR: Enable it only when the game and display support it as intended. HDR can alter picture presets and brightness, so judge it in an actual HDR game rather than assuming it improves every title.
Change one option at a time. If a change causes flicker or a lost signal, undo that last change before altering additional settings.
Configure each game for the monitor you selected
- In the game’s video or display menu, select the 210Hz monitor if the game lists multiple displays.
- Choose the intended resolution and a display mode supported by the game, such as exclusive full-screen or borderless mode.
- Set the game’s refresh-rate option to 210Hz when the game exposes one. Some games inherit the Windows rate instead.
- Set the frame-rate limit according to your goals and the game’s behavior. A Windows setting of 210Hz does not require the game to render 210 FPS.
- Play a demanding scene and watch for tearing, stutter, flicker, signal loss, or a rate that falls back to a lower value.
Use the monitor’s information panel or Windows Advanced display page to confirm the active mode while testing. A game can run on the wrong monitor or use a different resolution even when the desktop is correctly configured.
Why 210Hz is missing, and how to fix it
210Hz is not listed in Windows
- Return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select the correct monitor. Multi-monitor setups can leave the wrong display selected.
- Read the resolution shown beside the refresh-rate menu. Windows lists modes based on the monitor’s supported combinations; 210Hz may be available only at a different resolution.
- Open the monitor OSD and enable the required overclock or high-refresh mode, then restart the monitor if requested.
- Check whether the connected input is the one specified for 210Hz. Move the cable to the correct GPU output only after confirming the port assignment in the manual.
The monitor is limited to a lower rate
- Confirm that the cable and direct connection meet the documented requirements for the selected resolution and refresh rate.
- Remove adapters, docks, KVM switches, and converters for a direct test.
- Verify that the cable is connected to the dedicated GPU, not a motherboard output that may have different capabilities.
- Install or reinstall the official graphics driver if the GPU control panel or display mode is missing. AMD’s setup guidance requires a supported GPU and current driver.
VRR controls are absent
- Enable FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync in the monitor OSD first.
- Confirm that the GPU, driver, connection, and monitor support the same VRR technology.
- On AMD systems, check Radeon settings > Display for FreeSync status.
- On NVIDIA systems, check NVIDIA Control Panel > Set up G-SYNC. An unvalidated display may not expose a reliable option.
The image flickers or loses signal at 210Hz
- Disable the last OSD feature you changed, particularly overclock, blur reduction, strobing, or HDR.
- Try the monitor’s documented lower refresh rate to separate a signal-path problem from a general display problem.
- Return to the native or previously stable mode if the 210Hz setting is marked overclocked and the display remains unstable.
- Check the manual for an input-specific limit, required restart, or a different cable specification.
A game appears capped below 210Hz
- Verify the game’s selected monitor, resolution, display mode, and in-game frame-rate cap.
- Check Windows 11 DRR. Microsoft says DRR can limit the maximum rate of other games; disable it temporarily and test again.
- Remember that a game may render fewer than 210 frames per second because of the PC or the game’s workload. That is different from Windows failing to apply the monitor’s 210Hz mode.
Use this checklist to validate the final setup
- The exact monitor model’s manual confirms 210Hz at the chosen resolution.
- The mode is identified as native or overclocked, and any required OSD option has been enabled.
- The cable runs directly from a documented GPU output to the documented monitor input.
- Windows Advanced display reports the intended resolution and 210Hz.
- VRR is enabled in both the monitor and the matching GPU control panel, if supported.
- The game is using the intended monitor and display mode.
- There is no flicker, dropout, persistent tearing, or unexpected fallback during a real game.
- Optional overdrive, HDR, blur-reduction, and strobing settings have been tested individually rather than applied from a universal preset.
What to compare when choosing among 210Hz monitors
If you are still deciding which display to buy, compare the complete mode rather than the headline number. A useful comparison records the following:
| Comparison point | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Resolution at 210Hz | Is the target resolution available at 210Hz, or only at a lower rate? |
| Native versus overclocked | Is 210Hz guaranteed as a standard mode, or does it require an OC setting? |
| Input support | Which HDMI and DisplayPort inputs support the desired resolution and refresh rate? |
| VRR support | Is FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or G-SYNC compatibility documented, and over what range? |
| Motion controls | What overdrive levels are available, and can blur reduction operate with VRR? |
| Signal requirements | Does the manufacturer specify a particular port version, cable, or restart procedure? |
The number 210Hz alone cannot answer those questions. The monitor, input, GPU, connection, resolution, driver, and game must all support the mode you intend to use.
