To use a 180Hz gaming monitor as intended, connect it through an input that supports 180Hz at your chosen resolution, select 180Hz in Windows, then enable adaptive sync on both the monitor and GPU. The exact port, cable, supported mode and variable refresh rate (VRR) range depend on your monitor and graphics card, so check their specifications before assuming a particular connection will work.

1. Connect the monitor using a supported input

Check your monitor’s manual and your GPU’s specifications for the supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations on each input. A monitor rated for 180Hz may not offer 180Hz at every resolution or through every port. HDMI and DisplayPort capabilities vary by model, so there is no universal best connection or cable version for all 180Hz monitors.

If you use AMD FreeSync with the configuration covered in AMD’s setup guidance, AMD says to check that the monitor’s DisplayPort setting is 1.2 or higher. Follow your monitor’s manual for the exact menu name and available options.

2. Turn on adaptive sync in the monitor menu

Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and enable its adaptive-sync option. Depending on the model, it may be labeled Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or another VRR-related name. Some monitor presets can disable FreeSync, so check the manual and confirm the feature remains enabled after changing presets. AMD notes that OSD labels and availability vary by monitor in its setup instructions.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, 1ms, AMD FreeSync, HDR10, Height Adj Stand, Black Equalizer, Virtual Aim Point, Auto Source Switch+ (LS27FG512ENXZA)
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

3. Select 180Hz in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. If more than one display is connected, select the 180Hz monitor.
  3. Choose the highest refresh rate available at your desired resolution, then check the display information panel to confirm both the active resolution and refresh rate.

Windows lists modes supported by the display, but available refresh rates depend on the current resolution. A rate marked with an asterisk may change the resolution if selected. Confirm the resolution after choosing a rate; Microsoft explains these options in its Windows refresh-rate instructions.

4. Enable VRR in your graphics software

Monitor-side adaptive sync is only one part of the setup. Enable the matching feature in your GPU software as well, using the steps for your graphics card.

NVIDIA graphics cards

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Set up G-SYNC.
  2. Enable G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible and choose full-screen or windowed operation to suit how you play.
  3. In Manage 3D Settings, confirm the Monitor Technology setting. NVIDIA says G-SYNC requires a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible display; see NVIDIA Control Panel Help.

AMD graphics cards

Open AMD Software’s Display settings and confirm FreeSync is enabled there, in addition to the monitor’s OSD. AMD says FreeSync synchronizes display refresh with a compatible GPU’s frame rate and can reduce or eliminate tearing and stutter on supported systems. Its FreeSync overview describes the technology; the setup article directs users to the monitor manual for model-specific details.

5. Keep frame rates above 180Hz from causing tearing

When a game regularly renders more frames per second than the monitor’s refresh rate, AMD recommends enabling V-Sync or capping the frame rate to help avoid tearing. Choose a frame-rate cap or V-Sync setting available in the game or graphics software, then check the result in the games you play. VRR helps synchronize refresh and frame delivery on compatible hardware, but its behavior and operating range depend on the particular display and GPU.

Why is my 180Hz monitor only showing 60Hz?

  • Windows is set to 60Hz: Return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select the monitor and highest supported rate.
  • The chosen resolution does not offer 180Hz: Check the monitor’s supported modes and select a resolution-and-refresh combination supported by that input.
  • The connection does not support the desired mode: Check the specifications for the exact monitor port, GPU output and cable. Do not assume that another port or cable standard will provide 180Hz without confirming the model’s limits.
  • A Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate setting is involved: DRR is separate from monitor adaptive sync. Microsoft says it requires VRR support and a display capable of at least 120Hz, and it can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a game runs below the expected rate while DRR is enabled, turn DRR off and retest, as described in Microsoft’s DRR guidance.

Check the exact VRR range for your display

Do not treat the monitor’s 180Hz maximum as its VRR operating range. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the supported range, resolution and input, and confirm the GPU supports the display’s adaptive-sync implementation. AMD’s FreeSync Premium description gives a tier minimum of “at least 120hz refresh rate at minimum FHD resolution”; that is a FreeSync Premium tier requirement, not a claim about the VRR range of every 180Hz monitor. See AMD’s FreeSync documentation.
