Connect and power on the monitor, select its connected input if needed, then open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Choose the correct screen, select 100 Hz if it is available, and confirm the page reports 100 Hz at your intended resolution.

Set the monitor to 100 Hz in Windows

  1. Connect and turn on the monitor. Use a video connection supported by both the monitor and PC, attach power, and switch on the monitor. If its on-screen display (OSD) asks for an input, select the port you connected. OSD names and options vary by model; MSI recommends checking the monitor’s manual for its specific setup instructions (MSI first-time monitor setup).
  2. Open Advanced display. In Windows, go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. If multiple screens are connected, choose the monitor you want to configure before changing its rate. Set up the screens in the arrangement that fits your use; Windows projection options include Extend (Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions; Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions).
  3. Choose the refresh rate. Find the refresh-rate control and select 100 Hz if it appears. The available rates depend on the display and its supported modes. If a listed rate has an asterisk, Microsoft says it does not support the current resolution; selecting it changes the resolution to achieve that rate. Check the resolution again after changing modes (Microsoft).
  4. Verify the result. In the same Advanced display page, check the information panel for the selected display. Confirm it is the intended monitor, reports 100 Hz, and shows the resolution you want.

If 100 Hz does not appear

A missing 100 Hz option alone does not show that the monitor is defective. Windows offers modes based on the selected display and its capabilities, and the resolution can affect which rates are available. Check the monitor’s manual for supported resolution-and-refresh combinations and any input-specific limits. Also confirm that the OSD input matches the port in use.

  • Check the connection. Make sure the cable is firmly connected. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance also suggests trying another cable or video output port, where available, and testing the monitor with another system (Microsoft external-monitor troubleshooting).
  • Check the display driver. Microsoft includes updating or reinstalling the display driver among troubleshooting steps. These checks diagnose possible connection or driver problems; none guarantees 100 Hz on every combination of monitor, PC, resolution, and cable (Microsoft).
  • Compare the exact device specifications. A monitor’s headline refresh rate is not a universal promise for every input and resolution. For example, ViewSonic lists a 48–100 Hz vertical frequency range over HDMI and DisplayPort for the VG2409U-2; that specification applies to that model, not all 100 Hz monitors (ViewSonic VG2409U-2 manual).
  • Do not assume a new cable is required. Check what came with the monitor and what both device manuals require before buying anything. Lenovo’s L27qe-40 listing describes a 100 Hz display and includes an HDMI 2.0 cable, but that is a product-specific bundle, not a rule for every monitor (Lenovo L27qe-40 product overview). HDMI and DisplayPort cannot be ranked universally for this task; the supported output modes of both devices and the cable in use determine whether the connection can deliver the desired mode.

Windows version and Dynamic Refresh Rate

Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; the system may continue to work, but it no longer receives Microsoft’s standard free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes (Microsoft).

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate is a separate feature, not the control you need to select 100 Hz on a 100 Hz-only display. Microsoft says Dynamic Refresh Rate requires a display that supports variable refresh rate (VRR) and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz (Microsoft).

Optional check in the monitor’s OSD

Some monitor OSDs include an Information page, but its availability and reported details depend on the model. ViewSonic’s VG2409U-2 manual, for example, lists an Information OSD option; consult your own monitor’s manual rather than assuming it will show refresh rate (ViewSonic VG2409U-2 manual).
