As of September 2026, you cannot activate a nationwide Ghanaian 5G service simply by changing an Android setting. Ghana was still completing its 5G spectrum-licensing process. The Communications Minister said spectrum assignment was expected before the end of 2026, with deployment to begin afterward. Until an operator has live 5G coverage where you are and has enabled your line, a 5G-capable phone will remain on 4G or another available network.
When a Ghanaian operator launches compatible service, the setup is straightforward: confirm your exact phone model, regional variant, software, SIM or eSIM service, supported bands and local coverage; then choose the 5G network mode in Android’s mobile-network settings. If mobile data itself is not working on MTN, enter the documented MTN APN values. An APN fixes data configuration; it does not create 5G coverage or turn on a network that has not launched.

Ghana’s 5G status: why the setting may not work yet
The most important step is checking availability before touching your phone. A network-mode menu can tell a handset what to prefer, but it cannot provide spectrum, a nearby radio site, an eligible account or a carrier’s 5G provisioning.

A Ghana News Agency report dated September 7, 2026 said Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George expected spectrum assignment before the end of 2026 and deployment afterward. That is a reported timetable, not a confirmed consumer launch date. A separate report dated September 10, 2026 said MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana and Goal Telecommunications had advanced to the next stage of the National Communications Authority licensing process. Advancement in licensing does not establish that any of those operators had a live retail 5G service at that time.

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations stated a goal of 70 per cent population-density 5G coverage by Ghana’s 70th Independence celebration in 2027. The figure is an objective, not a measurement of coverage already delivered. The minister’s statement was: “The vision is to achieve 70 per cent population density coverage of 5G by the 70th Independence celebration of our beloved nation next year.”
Therefore, a phone that shows only LTE, 4G or 3G is behaving normally if your operator has not launched 5G in your location. Check current notices from the NCA and your operator before assuming the handset is faulty; licensing, launch timing, coverage and eligibility can change.
What must be true before Android can use Ghanaian 5G
5G requires several pieces to line up. Check each one with the operator or phone manufacturer rather than relying only on a “5G” logo on a retail listing.
1. Your operator must have live local coverage
Ask whether the operator has commercially active 5G at your address or the specific places where you intend to use it. A national announcement, a licence or a planned target does not guarantee service in every town, building or street. Indoor signal can also differ from outdoor signal.
2. The exact phone variant must be compatible
Check the complete model number, not just the marketing name. Manufacturers can sell different regional variants with different radios and supported bands. An imported handset may have a different 5G configuration from one sold for another market.

3. The carrier, account and software must permit 5G
Confirm that your line and plan are eligible, that the SIM or eSIM profile is supported, and that the phone is not carrier-locked to another network. Install the manufacturer’s current software updates. MTN’s published compatibility material warns that support can vary by region, carrier lock and software version; that material concerns eSIM compatibility and does not verify Ghanaian 5G bands.
4. The phone must have a 5G radio
A 4G-only model cannot be upgraded to 5G by an APN, an app or a hidden Android code. Look up the exact model specifications and then ask the Ghanaian operator to confirm network compatibility. Do not treat a seller’s generic “5G ready” label as proof that the regional version works on a particular Ghanaian network.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
5. Coverage and handset support must overlap
Even a compatible phone may fall back to 4G when you leave the 5G footprint, enter a weak-signal area or move indoors. Fallback is expected network behavior, not evidence that setup failed.
How to select 5G in Android when service is available
Android’s labels differ between manufacturers, Android releases and languages. The general route is below; use the closest wording on your phone.
- Open Settings. Use the system Settings app, not a carrier app or a third-party “5G switcher.”
- Open Connections or Mobile network. Samsung phones commonly use Connections; other phones may show Network & internet, SIMs or Mobile networks.
- Select the SIM used for data. On a dual-SIM phone, open the Ghanaian SIM’s settings and make it the mobile-data SIM if necessary.
- Find Network mode, Preferred network type or a similarly named control. The exact label is device-dependent. MTN’s published Android instructions document the LTE-selection route, but they do not provide a Ghana-specific 5G menu walkthrough.
- Choose an available 5G option. Select a mode such as 5G/LTE/3G/2G (automatic) or an equivalent automatic 5G/4G setting when offered. If the phone offers only LTE/3G/2G, it is not currently exposing a usable 5G mode; do not force an unlisted option.
- Wait for registration. Toggle Airplane mode once or restart the phone if it does not re-register. Give the handset a short period to select the network, then test data in an area where the operator confirms 5G coverage.
There is no universal 5G label. Some phones place the control under SIMs, some under Mobile network, and some hide it when the carrier profile, software or hardware does not support 5G. A missing menu is not proof that the Ghanaian network is unavailable, but it is a reason to verify the model and carrier provisioning before changing anything else.

MTN mobile-data APN setup (and what it does not do)
If your problem is that MTN mobile data does not work at all, MTN’s Android help instructions specify this APN configuration:
Recommended Free Tools
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | MTN |
| APN | internet |
- Open Settings.
- Open Connection or Mobile networks.
- Choose Access Point Names.
- Tap New APN (the plus sign or three-dot menu may be used on some phones).
- Enter MTN in Name and internet in APN.
- Save the profile, select it, and test mobile data.
Leave fields not specified by MTN at their existing defaults unless support gives you a value. An APN tells the phone how to reach the operator’s packet-data service. It does not add a 5G radio, unlock unsupported bands, bypass a carrier lock, provision 5G on your account or create coverage. If data works on 4G after saving the APN, that confirms a data-configuration issue was corrected; it does not confirm 5G availability.
Compatibility checklist for a 5G-capable Android phone
Use this checklist before buying a handset or asking support to activate service.
- Record the exact model number and regional variant from Settings → About phone and the retail box.
- Confirm that the model contains a 5G modem, not merely a 4G/LTE modem.
- Ask the Ghanaian operator which 5G spectrum bands it uses and whether your exact model supports them. Do not infer Ghanaian-band support from a general eSIM compatibility list.
- Check whether the phone is unlocked or locked to another carrier.
- Install the latest official Android and modem updates available for that model.
- Confirm that your SIM or eSIM profile and account are eligible for the operator’s 5G service.
- Check the operator’s current coverage map or service notice for the places you actually use the phone.
- Verify which SIM is selected for mobile data if the phone has two SIMs.
If a seller cannot provide the regional model number or supported bands, treat compatibility as unverified. A low price does not compensate for a handset that cannot register on the local network.
What to do when 5G is missing or will not connect
Work through the symptoms in order. Changing an APN is useful only for a data-connection problem; it is not the first response to a missing 5G option.

The phone shows no 5G option
- Confirm the exact model and regional variant.
- Install pending system and carrier-configuration updates.
- Check that the correct SIM is selected for data and that the phone is not locked to another carrier.
- Ask the operator whether your account and SIM profile are 5G-enabled.
- Ask the manufacturer or operator whether 5G is intentionally hidden for that model, region or software build.
If the operator has not launched 5G where you are, no setting can add the option. If the operator says service is live and your model is eligible, carrier support should check provisioning rather than sending you random APN values.
The phone offers 5G but remains on 4G
- Test in a location the operator confirms is covered.
- Keep the network mode on automatic 5G/4G rather than forcing a mode that may be unavailable at your location.
- Turn Airplane mode on briefly and off, or restart the phone.
- Check that mobile data is enabled and that a data limit or battery-saving mode is not restricting it.
- Move outdoors or to another nearby location to rule out building attenuation.
A 5G-capable phone normally falls back to 4G when 5G signal or capacity is insufficient. That fallback does not by itself indicate a defective phone.
The phone shows 5G but data is unusable
- Open a simple webpage or run a small download to distinguish a symbol from usable data.
- Check that the correct SIM is the mobile-data SIM.
- For MTN, verify the APN profile contains Name “MTN” and APN “internet,” then save and select it.
- Check account status, plan eligibility and any operator outage notice.
- Ask support to verify 5G provisioning and the local site, rather than assuming the APN is responsible.
The phone loses service after changing network mode
Return to the automatic mode that includes 4G/LTE. A forced mode can leave the phone trying to use a technology that is not available at your location. If service does not return, restart the phone and contact the operator before resetting network settings; a reset can remove saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to confirm that you are actually using 5G
The status-bar icon is only an indicator. Confirm the radio technology in the phone’s network information screen, if your model provides one, and test data in a known coverage area. Record the location, time, SIM used and network indicator when contacting support. This gives the operator enough context to distinguish a coverage boundary from a handset or account problem.
Do not describe a brief 5G icon as proof of nationwide service. Coverage can vary by street, building, time and network load. A future Ghanaian operator’s published map and eligibility terms should be treated as the authority for its service area.

What to compare once Ghanaian 5G services launch
The available evidence does not establish two verified consumer 5G services to rank today. When commercial offers appear, compare them on the factors that determine whether your own phone will work:
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Local coverage | Does the map include your home, workplace and travel routes, and is indoor coverage addressed? |
| Spectrum and handset support | Which bands are used, and does the exact regional model of your phone support them? |
| Activation | Is 5G enabled automatically, or must the account, SIM or eSIM be provisioned? |
| Plan terms | Does your current plan include 5G, and are there data limits or fair-use conditions? |
| Observed service | After activation, does the connection remain usable where you need it, rather than only showing a 5G icon? |
A licensing-stage announcement is not a substitute for these checks. Avoid choosing a provider solely because it was named in a licensing report.
Practical decision tree
- Is 5G commercially live in your area? If no or unknown, wait for an official operator notice; settings cannot create coverage.
- Is your exact phone variant confirmed compatible? If no, verify the model, bands, lock status and software before changing settings.
- Is 5G visible in Preferred network type or Network mode? If yes, select automatic 5G/4G and test in confirmed coverage. If no, ask the operator and manufacturer about eligibility and provisioning.
- Is mobile data failing on MTN? Check the documented MTN APN values, save the profile and test again. Remember that this addresses data configuration, not 5G activation.
- Does the problem remain? Give support your model number, software version, SIM type, location and the time of the failed test so it can check account provisioning and the local network.
What the 2026 rollout timetable means for phone owners
The September 2026 reports describe a process still moving from licensing toward spectrum assignment and deployment. The minister’s expected end-of-2026 assignment and the ministry’s 2027 coverage objective are useful planning signals, but neither is a guarantee that a particular city, neighborhood or handset will be served on a particular date.
For now, the sensible preparation is to keep Android updated, know your exact model number, confirm that the phone is unlocked, and retain the operator’s support details. Once an operator publishes live coverage and eligibility information, repeat the compatibility and network-mode checks above. Until then, remaining on 4G is the expected result, not a failed 5G setup.
