Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no PS5 menu switch that Sony documents as “4K upscaling for PS2 games.” You can set the console to send a 2160p (4K) signal to a compatible television or monitor, but that output setting does not prove that a PS2 classic is rendered internally at native 4K. The game’s own port, emulator and display pipeline determine how its original image is presented.
For the best documented setup, connect the PS5 to a 4K-capable display, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, and leave Resolution on Automatic or choose 2160p when it is available. Then locate the particular PS2 title in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog; availability, download or streaming access, and membership requirements vary by region and change over time.

What “4K upscaling” means on a PS5
Three separate stages are easy to confuse:
- Game rendering: the resolution and image treatment used by the PS2 classic’s software or emulator.
- Console output: the video mode the PS5 sends through HDMI, such as 2160p.
- Display processing: scaling, sharpening and other processing performed by the television or monitor.
The PS5’s Resolution control governs the second stage. Sony says the console detects a television’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. On a compatible 4K display, that can be 2160p. Sony does not describe this control as a PS2-specific renderer or promise that every PS2 classic is converted to a native-4K image. See Sony’s PS5 resolution guide.
Consequently, setting 2160p can make the television receive a 4K signal while the game image itself may originate at a lower resolution and be scaled somewhere in the chain. The setting is still useful: it establishes the console’s output mode and lets a 4K display handle the final presentation, but it is not evidence of a particular title’s internal resolution or visual quality.

What you need before changing settings
- A PS5 connected to a television or monitor that supports 4K (2160p) input.
- An HDMI connection and display input that support the video mode you intend to use. Sony lists the cable included with the PS5, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable, as troubleshooting checks for 4K 120 Hz signal problems; a replacement cable is not an upscaling feature.
- A PS2 classic that is currently offered for your PlayStation account’s region and membership plan.
- Broadband internet if you plan to stream a catalog title rather than download it. The live catalog listing is the authority for whether a particular game is downloadable, stream-only or unavailable.
Do not assume that owning a PS5 makes every PS2 disc or digital purchase playable. The PS2 titles covered here are specific classics offered through Sony’s current catalog and other title-specific PlayStation Store listings.
Set the PS5 to its highest compatible output
- Connect the console to the display. Use a 4K-capable HDMI input on the television or monitor. If the display has several HDMI ports with different capabilities, consult its labeling or manual and use the port specified for the desired mode.
- Open the video-output controls. From the PS5 home screen, select Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Choose Resolution. Leave it at Automatic if you want the PS5 to detect the display and select the highest supported mode. Sony specifically documents Automatic as the setting that detects the TV’s capabilities. If 2160p is offered and you want to force a 4K output signal, select it.
- Confirm the display mode. Check the television or monitor’s information panel, if it provides one, to see what signal it is receiving. A 2160p indication confirms the output signal, not the PS2 game’s internal rendering resolution.
- Launch the game and evaluate it at normal viewing distance. Do not infer a rendering specification solely from the console’s 2160p status. Different classics can have different ports, image filters and presentation choices.
If 2160p is not listed, the PS5 has detected that the current display path does not support it, or a device in the chain is limiting the available modes. Keep Resolution on Automatic while you isolate the display, receiver, switch or cable responsible.
What to check on the television or monitor
A 4K panel and a 4K input are related but not identical checks. Use the display’s information screen to verify the incoming signal after changing the PS5 setting. If you use a monitor, its supported timings can differ from those of a television even when both are advertised as 4K. A receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device can also report its own limitations to the console. Testing the PS5 directly on the display is the quickest way to separate a display-path issue from a game issue.
Keep the television’s picture mode consistent while comparing Automatic, 2160p and 1440p. Changing sharpness, noise reduction and other processing at the same time makes it impossible to know which change affected the result. A sharper-looking image is not automatically evidence of higher game rendering resolution; it may simply reflect the display’s scaler or sharpening filter.
Find and play a PS2 classic on PS5
The image setting cannot help until the game is available to your account. Sony’s catalog instructions provide this route:
- From the PS5 home screen, open Games > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog.
- Search or browse for the exact PS2 title.
- Open the title’s live listing and read the current access information for your country or region.
- Select Download when a download is offered, or Stream when the title is available through streaming and your connection meets the service requirements.
- Check that your PlayStation Plus membership tier includes the title. Catalog availability varies by membership plan and can change over time.
Use Sony’s instructions for accessing the catalog at How to access PlayStation Plus classics catalog on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles. Sony’s general PlayStation Plus page is at playstation.com/en-us/ps-plus. Because the catalog is volatile and regional, a listing visible to one account may not be visible to another, and a title can be added, removed or moved between plans.

Membership, download and streaming considerations
PlayStation Plus access is a service requirement, not a video-quality setting. The exact tier shown on the title’s listing controls whether you can claim, download or stream it. PlayStation Plus Premium is the service category most closely associated with the Classics Catalog, but plan names, benefits and prices can differ by country and can change. Check the current PlayStation Store or PlayStation Plus page for your account’s region instead of relying on an old price or assuming a particular game is included.
Recommended Free Tools
Downloading and streaming are separate paths. A downloadable classic still needs to be listed for your region and plan, and the PS5 must have enough storage for the installation. A stream-only listing requires a suitable broadband connection and depends on the service being available for your account. Neither method establishes that the title is internally rendered at 4K. If picture quality or responsiveness is the concern, compare the title’s available access methods and use the one offered by Sony for your region; do not treat a faster HDMI cable as a substitute for a supported catalog entitlement.
Which setting affects the picture?
| PS5 option or component | What it controls | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution: Automatic | Lets the console detect the display and select the best available output mode. | It does not identify the PS2 game’s internal rendering resolution. |
| Resolution: 2160p | Requests a 2160p output signal when the connected display path supports it. | It does not guarantee native-4K rendering or a specific upscale algorithm for a PS2 classic. |
| Resolution: 1440p | Provides a 1440p output mode on compatible televisions and monitors. Sony says higher-native-resolution content such as 4K may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling to 1440p. | Sony does not promise a specific improvement for PS2 games. |
| Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games | A PS5 Pro image-quality option for PS4 games on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. | It is not a PS2 enhancement switch. |
| HDMI cable | Can affect whether a high-bandwidth signal is carried reliably. | Changing cables does not add game upscaling. |
The 1440p behavior is described on Sony’s PS5 features page: PS5 features. Treat it as an output and anti-aliasing option for compatible setups, not as a documented PS2 remaster mode.
PS5 Pro: do not use the PS4 enhancement switch for PS2 games
PS5 Pro owners see an option named Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games. Its name is deliberately narrow. Sony states that the setting is available only for PS4 games played on consoles from the CFI-7000 model group, and it requires a 2160p or 1440p display. It is not documented for PS2 classics.
Leave that option out of your PS2 troubleshooting checklist. For a PS2 title on a PS5 Pro, the relevant documented controls remain the console’s output Resolution setting, the display’s supported modes and the availability of the title itself. Sony’s eligibility and requirements are listed at How to enhance image quality for PS4 games on PS5 Pro consoles.

Choosing between Automatic, 2160p and 1440p
Use Automatic for the least complicated setup
Automatic is the sensible default when the PS5 is connected directly to a modern 4K television or monitor. The console negotiates the highest mode the display reports as supported, reducing the chance of selecting a mode the screen cannot show. It is also the best starting point when you use an AV receiver, HDMI switch or capture device between the PS5 and display.

Choose 2160p when you want a fixed 4K signal
Select 2160p if Automatic does not produce the mode you expect and the display path is known to support it. This can simplify diagnosis because the requested output is explicit. If the screen goes blank or the mode is rejected, return to Automatic and investigate the connection rather than treating the failure as a game-upscaling problem.
Consider 1440p only for a compatible display
Some monitors and televisions accept 1440p and may present it more cleanly than a forced 2160p signal that they must scale. Sony notes a supersampling benefit for higher-native-resolution content, but does not provide a PS2-specific quality guarantee. Compare the modes on your own display without assuming that one is universally sharper.
How to compare modes fairly
- Start one title at a repeatable scene with fine text, foliage or geometry that makes scaling differences visible.
- Note the display’s reported input mode before changing anything.
- Compare Automatic and 2160p without changing the television’s picture preset.
- If the display supports it, test 1440p separately and record whether the monitor or television performs another scale.
- Return to the mode that is stable and looks best from your normal seating position.
This is a practical viewing comparison, not a measurement of the game’s internal resolution. Sony does not publish one rendering specification covering every PS2 classic, so avoid presenting a personal sharpness judgment as a universal technical result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot a missing or unstable 4K signal
2160p is not available in the menu
- Verify that the television or monitor actually supports 4K input, not merely a 4K panel with restrictions on a particular HDMI port.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display temporarily, bypassing an AV receiver, switch or capture device that may report lower capabilities.
- Return Resolution to Automatic and reopen the Video Output screen so the PS5 can renegotiate the display’s capabilities.
The screen flickers, drops out or refuses 4K 120 Hz
Sony’s resolution guidance lists the included HDMI cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as troubleshooting checks for 4K 120 Hz problems. Test the cable supplied with the console first, then test another cable of the appropriate class if the problem persists. This addresses signal integrity and compatibility; it does not change the rendering resolution of a PS2 classic. Follow the checks in Sony’s 4K resolution support article.
The game still looks soft or shows jagged edges
A 2160p status on the television cannot identify where scaling occurred. The source image may be lower-resolution, the title may use its own filtering, and the display may apply additional processing. Try Automatic and 2160p, and if supported, compare 1440p, but record the result as a display-specific observation rather than proof that the game is or is not rendered in 4K.
A title cannot be found in the Classics Catalog
- Search the exact title name and check the game’s region-specific listing.
- Confirm that your PlayStation Plus plan includes the Classics Catalog access shown for that title.
- Check whether the game is download-only, stream-only or temporarily absent. Availability can change without any change to your PS5 video settings.
How to judge a specific PS2 title
There is no single “PS2 games on PS5” image result to apply to every release. For each title, check these four facts in order:

- Access method: Can you download it, stream it, or use only the method shown in the listing?
- Service requirements: Does your membership plan qualify, and do you have the broadband connection required for streaming?
- Display path: Does your television or monitor accept the output mode you selected?
This approach separates an availability problem from a video-output problem. If the game launches but does not look as sharp as expected, the PS5 menu can confirm the signal mode only; Sony’s documented pages do not specify the internal rendering path or exact output resolution for every PS2 classic.
Common mistakes to avoid
| Mistake | Why it is wrong | Better action |
|---|---|---|
| Assuming 2160p means the game is rendered natively in 4K | 2160p describes the HDMI output mode, not necessarily the game’s source image. | Describe it as 4K output and check the individual title’s listing and presentation. |
| Turning on the PS5 Pro PS4 enhancement for a PS2 classic | Sony scopes that feature to PS4 games on CFI-7000-group consoles. | Use Resolution settings; do not treat the PS4 option as PS2 support. |
| Buying a new HDMI cable to obtain upscaling | A cable can solve a signal-compatibility fault but cannot create an enhancement mode. | Replace the cable only when troubleshooting an unstable or unsupported signal. |
| Assuming every PS2 game is in PlayStation Plus | The catalog is title-specific, regional and plan-dependent. | Search the live Classics Catalog listing before changing settings or subscribing. |
| Judging all PS2 classics from one title | Ports and presentation can differ between games. | Evaluate each title separately and avoid generalizing its image quality. |
A practical setup checklist
- Use a display that supports 2160p input.
- Connect the PS5 through a compatible HDMI path.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic, or select 2160p if the mode is offered and you want to force it.
- Open Games > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog.
- Verify the exact PS2 title, region, membership requirement and download/stream option.
- Use the PS5 Pro PS4 enhancement setting only for its documented PS4 scope.
- If the signal is unstable, test the supplied HDMI cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable before changing other variables.
The result you can accurately claim is that the PS5 is sending a compatible 4K signal to the display. Whether a particular PS2 classic looks substantially cleaner depends on that title’s presentation and the display’s own processing; Sony does not publish one universal PS2-to-4K rendering specification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PS5 upscale PS2 games to 4K?
The PS5 can output a 2160p signal to a compatible display, but Sony does not document a universal PS2-specific 4K upscaling switch or promise native-4K rendering for every classic. The title’s port, emulator and display processing determine the final image.
Where is the 4K setting on PS5?
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, then open Resolution. Leave it on Automatic or select 2160p when that option is available.
Does PS5 Pro enhance PS2 games?
Sony’s Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games setting is limited to PS4 games on CFI-7000 model-group consoles. It is not documented as a PS2 feature.

Can I play any PS2 disc on PS5?
No. PS2 classics on PS5 are title-specific catalog or Store offerings. Check the live Classics Catalog listing for your region and membership plan.
Is PlayStation Plus required for PS2 classics?
Access depends on the exact listing and your region. Check the current title page for the qualifying PlayStation Plus plan and whether the game is downloadable or stream-only. Plan benefits and prices can change.
Why does my TV say 2160p while the game still looks soft?
2160p confirms the HDMI output mode, not the game’s internal rendering resolution. The source image, title filtering and television scaling can all affect sharpness.
Should I choose 1440p instead of 2160p?
Only if your display supports 1440p and you prefer its presentation. Sony mentions supersampling benefits for some higher-native-resolution content, but does not promise a specific improvement for PS2 games.
The Bottom Line
Set Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Resolution to Automatic or 2160p on a compatible 4K display, then verify the individual title in the regional Classics Catalog. That gives you documented 4K output, not a guarantee of native-4K PS2 rendering. Treat PS5 Pro’s enhancement option as PS4-only, and replace an HDMI cable only to solve a signal problem.
