Set up spatial audio at the platform level, then make sure Dying Light is using that same output device. On PS5, enable 3D Audio for Headphones with a personalised profile, or measure your room for 3D Audio for TV Speakers. Use Dolby Atmos on PS5 only when sound is traveling over HDMI to a compatible TV, soundbar, or receiver. On Xbox, select Microsoft Spatial Sound under Settings > General > Volume & audio output. On Windows, select the active headset, USB DAC, or HDMI device and choose a supported format under its Spatial sound property. If gameplay works but logos, videos, or the opening sequence are silent, correct the output routing before changing volume or surround settings.
What spatial audio can and cannot do in Dying Light
Dying Light does not have a documented, game-specific switch for a branded Tempest, Dolby Atmos, or other object-based mode. The reliable control point is the operating system or console audio renderer. These systems process the game’s existing mix and send it to your selected headphones, TV speakers, soundbar, or receiver.

That processing can make direction, distance, height, and room cues easier to perceive, but the result depends on the game’s channel mix, your output device, and the renderer you select. A platform setting is therefore not proof that Dying Light is producing native object metadata. It is an enhancement applied outside the game.

- Output: headphones, TV speakers, HDMI soundbar, or HDMI receiver.
- Processing layer: PS5 3D Audio, Xbox or Windows Microsoft Spatial Sound, or Dolby Atmos sent to a compatible HDMI device.
- Connection: USB, a USB wireless dongle, DualSense 3.5 mm, HDMI, or another platform-supported wireless path.
Keeping those three choices consistent prevents the most common failure: gameplay audio goes to one device while a logo, trailer, or news video is routed to another.

Set up 3D audio on PS5 with headphones
Open the headphone 3D-audio controls
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Sound.
- Open 3D Audio (Headphones).
PS5 can process stereo headphones connected through USB, a USB wireless dongle, or the 3.5 mm jack on the DualSense controller. The headset does not need a special game-specific Dying Light mode; the console performs the spatial processing before sending audio to the connected headphones.
Create a personalised profile
- Choose Create Personalised 3D Audio Profile.
- Follow the listening prompts in a quiet environment. Keep the headphones positioned as you normally wear them.
- Save the profile when the prompts finish.
- Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones.
Sony explains that people perceive 3D sound differently, so the profile is intended to bring the rendered cues closer to your own hearing level. If you do not want to run the listening process, PS5 also provides five headphone profile presets. Choose the preset that gives you the clearest front, rear, and height cues rather than the one that simply sounds loudest.
Use the same profile when testing Dying Light. Switching profiles while comparing modes changes the tonal balance as well as the spatial impression, which can make a fair comparison difficult.

Check the active headphone route
Connect the headset before launching Dying Light and confirm that PS5 is sending output to it. A USB headset or dongle may appear as a separate output from the TV. If the console remains set to HDMI, the game can continue playing through the television even though the headset is connected.
For a wired headset, the DualSense 3.5 mm jack is a direct alternative to USB. Keep the controller connected and set the output device to the controller headset route. For a USB headset or dongle, select that USB device as the output instead of the HDMI television or receiver.

Set up 3D audio for PS5 TV speakers
Measure the room with the DualSense microphone
- Open Settings on PS5.
- Go to Sound > 3D Audio (TV).
- Start the room-acoustics measurement.
- Place the DualSense where you normally sit or hold it in the listening position as instructed on screen.
- Complete the measurement, then enable 3D Audio for TV Speakers.
The measurement adapts the rendering to the room and listening position. Run it again if you move the TV, change the seating position, rearrange the room, or make another change that alters the sound reaching the microphone. A measurement made from the wrong chair can reduce the usefulness of the cues for the person actually playing.
Use this mode only when the television’s own speakers are the output. If PS5 is sending sound to a soundbar or receiver over HDMI, use the HDMI audio instructions instead of treating the TV-speaker profile as a substitute.
Use Dolby Atmos on PS5 with an HDMI system
When the Atmos option is appropriate
Choose Dolby Atmos on PS5 when the output is a compatible HDMI soundbar, television, or home-theater receiver that is configured to decode it. Sony documents Tempest 3D AudioTech rendering to compatible Dolby Atmos HDMI devices, including systems with overhead channels.
This is a different connection path from a USB or controller headset. Do not select the HDMI Atmos format while expecting the sound to appear in headphones connected to the DualSense; route the console to the device that is meant to decode the HDMI signal.
Select the HDMI audio format
- Open Settings.
- Select Sound > Audio Output.
- Set the output device to the HDMI television, soundbar, or receiver.
- Open Audio Format (Priority).
- Select Dolby Atmos.
Turn on the soundbar or receiver before testing and verify that it is receiving audio over HDMI. If the device does not support Atmos, use the format it supports instead; selecting an unsupported format can produce silence, fallback audio, or a signal the device cannot decode.

The game’s official material does not establish a Dying Light-specific object-based Atmos mix. The PS5 renderer and the HDMI device are doing the spatial processing, while Dying Light supplies its normal game audio.
Set up spatial sound for Dying Light on Xbox
Choose Microsoft Spatial Sound
- Open the Xbox guide and go to Profile & system > Settings.
- Select General.
- Open Volume & audio output.
- Under the relevant headphone, TV, or receiver format controls, select the available Microsoft Spatial Sound option appropriate to the connected device.
- Apply the setting and launch Dying Light after confirming the output device.
Microsoft describes Spatial Sound as providing surround and elevation cues on Xbox and Windows. The available choice can differ according to whether you are using headphones, TV speakers, or a receiver, so select the format that matches the hardware actually connected.
Official material does not verify a separate Dying Light in-game spatial-audio switch on Xbox. Treat the Xbox audio renderer as the controlling layer. If you change headsets, switch from HDMI to a controller connection, or wake the console with a different device attached, revisit Volume & audio output and confirm the route again.
Set up spatial sound for Dying Light on Windows PC
Make the game’s output device the Windows active device
- Connect the headset, USB DAC, or HDMI display, soundbar, or receiver you intend to use.
- Open Windows sound settings and select that device as the active output.
- Open the device’s properties.
- Find the Spatial sound section.
- Choose an available spatial format supported by the device and installed software.
- Apply the change, then start Dying Light.
Windows applies spatial sound per output device. Selecting a format for a monitor does not automatically enable it for a USB headset, and changing the default device after the game starts can leave the game attached to the previous route. Set the device first, then launch the game.
Choose between headphones and HDMI hardware
For headphones, select the headset or USB DAC that will reproduce the processed signal. A USB DAC may appear separately from the headset attached to it, so verify the name shown in Windows rather than assuming the most recently connected device is active.

For an HDMI soundbar, TV, or receiver, select the HDMI endpoint and ensure the external hardware is powered on and set to the correct input. The PC can report that spatial sound is enabled while the display is muted, on another input, or using a different audio return path.
If several formats are listed, test one at a time with a known game sound. Keep the format that preserves clear dialogue and directional effects without clipping or unexpected silence. There is no documented Dying Light setting that overrides the Windows spatial-sound choice.
Which setup should you use?
| Hardware and connection | Platform control | Recommended path | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headphones through PS5 USB | PS5 3D Audio | Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones); create a profile or choose one of five presets, then enable the feature | Processing is based on the console output; Dying Light has no documented branded mode |
| Headphones through a PS5 USB dongle | PS5 3D Audio | Use the same headphone profile after selecting the dongle as the active output | The dongle and HDMI TV are separate output choices |
| Headphones through DualSense 3.5 mm | PS5 3D Audio | Plug in the controller, open the headphone 3D-audio menu, and enable the feature | Audio follows the controller route, not necessarily the TV route |
| PS5 TV speakers | PS5 3D Audio for TV | Measure room acoustics with the DualSense, then enable 3D Audio for TV Speakers | Remeasure after moving the TV, seat, or room furnishings |
| PS5 HDMI soundbar, TV, or receiver | PS5 Dolby Atmos output | Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) > Dolby Atmos | The HDMI device must support the selected format |
| Xbox headphones, TV, or receiver | Microsoft Spatial Sound | Settings > General > Volume & audio output, then choose the format matching the connected hardware | No separate Dying Light spatial switch is documented |
| Windows headset or USB DAC | Windows Spatial sound | Open the active device’s properties and choose an available Spatial sound format | The setting is per output device |
| Windows HDMI display or receiver | Windows Spatial sound | Make the HDMI endpoint active, configure Spatial sound, and launch the game afterward | The display or receiver must be powered and on the correct input |
Fix sound missing from logos, videos, or the opening sequence
Techland documents a failure in which gameplay has sound but the WB logo, Techland logo, intro trailer, opening sequence, or video news is silent. Those video portions can use a different output from the main game. The fastest fix is to verify routing, not to raise the game volume.
Windows checks
- Confirm the headset, USB DAC, or HDMI device is the current Windows default output.
- Open the device properties and ensure the spatial format is applied to that same device.
- Check that the device was not unplugged, disabled, or replaced after Dying Light started.
- Close and relaunch the game after correcting the output, because the video component may have opened against the earlier device.
PS5 checks
- Verify whether the console is routing to HDMI, a USB headset, a USB dongle, or the DualSense 3.5 mm jack.
- If using a soundbar or receiver, confirm the HDMI input and audio format are supported and active.
- If using headphones, make sure the selected output is the connected headset rather than the television.
- Restart Dying Light after changing the output route.
Xbox checks
- Reopen Settings > General > Volume & audio output and verify the current device and spatial format.
- Check whether the console switched from a headset to HDMI when the headset was disconnected or the controller changed.
- Power on the TV or receiver and select the correct HDMI input before starting the game.
- Quit and relaunch Dying Light after correcting the route.
If only videos are silent
Keep the output device unchanged while moving from a logo or trailer into gameplay. If gameplay returns but the next video is silent, repeat the platform routing checks and temporarily use the device’s standard stereo output. If stereo restores the missing video audio, re-enable spatial processing after confirming the endpoint supports it. This isolates an output or decoder mismatch from a simple volume setting.

Using the wrong output type
PS5’s TV-speaker 3D profile is not a headphone profile, and an HDMI Atmos setting is not a USB-headset setting. Match the menu to the physical path carrying the sound. When changing hardware, change the platform output and test again rather than leaving the previous route selected.

Expecting a game menu that is not documented
Dying Light’s documented controls do not establish a dedicated spatial-audio toggle. Searching the game’s volume menu for a hidden Atmos or Tempest switch can waste time. Configure the console or Windows renderer, then use the game’s normal volume and dynamic-range controls only for level and mix preferences.
Measuring the PS5 room from the wrong position
TV-speaker 3D audio depends on the DualSense room measurement. If the controller is measured beside the TV or from an empty chair, the profile does not represent the player’s listening position. Repeat the measurement from the normal seat after any substantial room or furniture change.
Launching before the device is ready
Video sequences can bind to the output available when the game starts. Turn on the receiver, connect the headset, select the Windows default device, or complete the console route first. Then launch Dying Light. A relaunch is especially useful after changing from HDMI to USB or from one HDMI endpoint to another.

- Choose one output device and disconnect or mute competing devices temporarily.
- Set the platform renderer for that connection: PS5 3D Audio, PS5 Dolby Atmos for compatible HDMI, Xbox Microsoft Spatial Sound, or Windows Spatial sound.
- Start Dying Light and listen to a logo or opening video before entering gameplay.
- Check a repeatable gameplay scene with dialogue, environmental ambience, and movement around the player.
- If both video and gameplay work, compare another profile or format only after recording the original setting.
- If a video is silent, return to the standard stereo format and confirm the endpoint. Reintroduce spatial processing only after the basic route works.
This order separates connection problems from rendering preferences. It also avoids judging a new profile while the game is still sending audio to an unintended device.
Can a USB headset provide Dying Light 3D audio?
Yes on PS5: Sony explicitly supports stereo headphones connected by USB or a USB dongle for PS5 3D Audio. A headset plugged into the DualSense 3.5 mm jack is also supported. On Xbox and Windows, USB operation depends on the platform recognizing the headset as the active output and exposing a compatible Microsoft Spatial Sound or Windows Spatial sound format.
USB alone does not guarantee a particular spatial effect. The platform renderer, selected output, headset or DAC processing, and Dying Light’s underlying mix all influence what you hear. If a USB headset works in menus but not in a logo or intro, check that the game started after the USB device became the active route.
What to expect from the final result
With the correct route, spatial processing can improve the separation of front, rear, side, and elevation cues compared with ordinary stereo playback. It cannot add sound that the game mix does not contain, and it cannot repair an HDMI handshake, muted receiver, unplugged headset, or video component pointed at another output.

The most dependable setup is the simplest one: select the physical device you are actually using, enable the platform’s matching renderer, launch Dying Light after that selection, and recheck the route whenever you change hardware. On PS5, personalise headphone audio or measure the TV room; on Xbox and Windows, choose the supported spatial format for the active device; for PS5 HDMI equipment, use Dolby Atmos only when the connected hardware is compatible.
