Before placing a Coinbase trade, check the limits attached to your own account, create a price alert for the asset you are watching, and decide whether an order should use a limit, stop-limit, take-profit/stop-loss, or bracket instruction. These controls do different jobs: an account limit governs how much you can purchase or deposit through a payment method, an alert only notifies you, and an order instruction can be sent for execution when its conditions are met.
Coinbase does not publish one universal purchase or deposit allowance for every customer. Your available amounts, payment methods, order products, and menu labels can depend on your location, account history, payment type, product, and regional availability. Use the signed-in Coinbase app or website to see the values that actually apply to you.

What to check before you trade
Use this sequence when preparing a trade:
- Open your signed-in Coinbase account and record the purchase or deposit limits shown for the payment method you intend to use.
- Add the asset to your mobile watchlist, then create an alert above or below your chosen price.
- Configure the notification channels you will monitor, such as push, in-app, or email.
- Choose an order type separately from the account limit. A limit or stop-limit order is an execution instruction, not an increase to your account capacity.
- Review available funds, price constraints, and open orders before submitting.
This separation prevents a common mistake: treating a notification threshold or an order price as if it changed the amount Coinbase permits you to buy or deposit.

In the mobile app
- Open Coinbase and open the app menu.
- Select Profile & Settings.
- Tap Limits.
The Limits screen displays the allowances associated with the payment types available to your account. Read the entries for the payment method you plan to use rather than assuming that a bank transfer, card, or another method has the same capacity.

Coinbase’s Account limits guidance explains that purchase and deposit limits can vary by location and payment method. The amount can also change with account activity, trading history, payment type, and region. Consequently, an amount shown in another person’s account, an old screenshot, or a page written for another country is not a reliable value for your account.
What an increase message means
If Coinbase considers your account eligible for a higher limit, the next steps appear in the Account limits area. Follow only the instructions displayed there; eligibility is not a promise that an increase will be approved, and the available process can differ by region.
When limits replenish
Daily and weekly capacity is tied to the relevant transaction timing. The exact replenishment behavior can depend on the transaction and payment type, so use the current Account limits information in your account and Coinbase’s regional help material rather than relying on a fixed reset time copied from another source.

How to set a Coinbase price alert in the mobile app
Coinbase’s documented mobile flow requires the asset to be on your watchlist before you can create a price alert.
Add the asset to your watchlist
- Use search to find the stock or cryptocurrency you want to monitor.
- Select the asset’s page.
- Tap the star icon to add it to your watchlist.
Create the alert
- On the asset page, select the bell-plus icon.
- Choose Add Alert.
- Select whether the alert should trigger when the price moves above or below your target.
- Enter the target price.
- Save the alert.
Only watchlisted assets send a price alert through this workflow. If you cannot find the alert control, return to the asset page and verify that the star is active before trying again.
Choose how notifications are delivered
- Open the app menu.
- Select Account & Settings.
- Open Notification Settings.
Coinbase separates predetermined Price Alerts from Custom Alerts. Turn on the available push, in-app, and/or email switches for the alert types you want. Your phone’s operating-system permissions, email filters, and signed-in session can affect whether a particular channel is visible or delivers promptly.
What a price alert does not do
A price alert reports that a price condition was met. It does not submit a buy or sell order, reserve funds, or guarantee that you will see the message before the market moves again. Treat the alert as a prompt to review the market and your plan, not as an automated trading strategy or investment advice.
Make the alert useful for your plan
Choose the direction and target before opening the alert form. An above alert can flag a move through a level you are watching; a below alert can flag a decline through a level that matters to your plan. The alert itself does not define what you will do next, so write down the intended response separately: review the chart, check available funds, submit an order, or take no action.

Keep the alert target distinct from the order price. You might want a notification when an asset reaches one level but submit a limit order at another level that reflects the price you are actually willing to accept. Saving an alert does not reserve the target price, lock in a quote, or hold cash for a later purchase.
After saving, revisit the asset page and Notification Settings to confirm that the intended alert type and delivery channel remain enabled. If you monitor several assets, identify each alert by its asset and direction so that a message for one market is not mistaken for a signal on another.
Account limits and order prices are different controls
| Control | What it governs | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Account purchase or deposit limit | The amount your account can purchase or deposit through a particular payment type. | It does not set the execution price of an individual order. |
| Price alert | A notification when an asset reaches an above- or below-target condition. | It does not place, cancel, or modify an order. |
| Limit order | An order with a specified price constraint. | A complete fill; the market may not reach the price or enough liquidity may be available. |
| Stop-limit order | A limit order activated when a specified stop price is reached. | Execution after the stop; the resulting limit order can remain unfilled. |
| Take-profit/stop-loss or bracket order | Exit instructions that specify profit-taking and/or loss-control levels, where the product supports them. | Availability in every region or a guaranteed fill at the chosen level. |
Coinbase Advanced Trade describes these as order types and instructions. They are separate from the account-level limits shown in Settings.
How limit and stop-limit orders work
Limit order
A limit order tells Coinbase the price constraint you are willing to accept. A buy limit generally specifies the highest price you are prepared to pay; a sell limit specifies the lowest price you are prepared to accept. The order can execute only when matching market conditions exist. Reaching a displayed price does not guarantee that your entire quantity fills, because other orders may be ahead of yours or available liquidity may be insufficient.
Stop-limit order
A stop-limit order has two prices. The stop price activates the order when the trigger condition is reached; Coinbase then submits the associated limit order. Because the submitted order still has a price constraint, a fast-moving market can pass through that limit without producing a fill.
Take-profit, stop-loss, and bracket instructions
Coinbase documents take-profit/stop-loss and bracket orders as ways to specify exit levels in supported products. Check the order ticket for the controls available to your account and region. Do not assume that an instruction shown in Advanced Trade is available in every Coinbase product or jurisdiction.
Choosing between manual review and an order instruction
A price alert suits a plan in which you want to make the final decision after receiving a notification. It gives you a reminder to inspect the current market, balance, and order ticket. A limit order is more specific: it sends an instruction that can execute only within its price constraint, but it may remain open. A stop-limit order adds a trigger, which can be useful when an order should not become active until a stop price is reached, while still leaving the resulting limit order subject to fill risk.
Take-profit/stop-loss and bracket instructions can combine exit levels where the selected Coinbase product supports them. They are not account-limit settings and do not remove the need to check the amount available to trade. Compare the controls on the actual ticket rather than relying on a feature list for a different region or product.

Placing a basic limit order
Coinbase’s limit-order guide provides mobile and web setup flows. Labels can vary by product, so confirm the current ticket in your signed-in account.
Before submitting
- Confirm that the asset and trading pair are correct.
- Check the available balance in the asset you will spend or sell.
- Review the quantity, limit price, estimated total, and any displayed fees.
- Check whether the ticket warns about a price band or other entry constraint.
- Decide how long the order should remain open if a time-in-force choice is offered.
Submit and verify
- Open the trading interface and select the limit-order type.
- Enter the quantity and your limit price.
- Review the order summary and confirm the submission.
- Open order management to verify whether the order is open, partially filled, filled, or canceled.
Coinbase applies price bands at order entry. If the ticket rejects your price, read the displayed explanation and adjust the order only if the new price still matches your plan. A price-band rejection is not the same as an account-limit rejection.
Funds reserved by an open order
An open order can hold the funds committed to it. Those funds may not be available for another purchase or withdrawal until the order fills, is canceled, or otherwise releases them. Coinbase’s order-management documentation lets you inspect and cancel open orders. Check the open-order list before concluding that a balance has disappeared.
Partial fills and cancellation
An order can be partially filled. The remaining quantity can stay open until it fills, expires under the selected instruction, or you cancel it. Review the filled and remaining amounts in order management; do not treat the original quantity as completed merely because part of it executed.
Costs, balances, and order capacity
There is no single fee or capacity figure that applies to every Coinbase customer in every market. Review the estimated total and any displayed fees on the order ticket, along with the balance available for the selected pair. The account-limit screen addresses how much you can purchase or deposit through a payment method; it does not tell you how much of an already funded balance is committed to open orders.
Before submitting, compare the amount you intend to spend with both the displayed available balance and the account or payment-method limit relevant to the transaction. A deposit may be within an account limit while a separate trade is rejected for an invalid price, insufficient available balance, unsupported product, or another order-entry rule. Read the message shown on the ticket instead of assuming that one control explains every rejection.
A practical pre-trade workflow
Step 1: Confirm capacity
Open Limits on mobile or Settings → Account limits on the web. Match the displayed payment type to the deposit or purchase you intend to make. If the amount is lower than expected, do not infer that a limit order will bypass it; order controls do not change account funding limits.

Step 3: Select the execution rule
Decide whether you will review the market manually after an alert, submit a limit order, or use a supported stop-based or bracket instruction. Keep the alert threshold and order price conceptually separate: an alert can prompt a decision at one level while an order uses another level to control execution.
Step 4: Check the order ticket
Review the pair, side, quantity, price, estimated total, fees, price-band notice, and any time-in-force setting. Verify that the balance shown is not already committed to another open order.
Step 5: Monitor the order state
After submission, use order management to see whether the order is open, partially filled, filled, or canceled. If your plan changes, cancel the open order before placing a replacement, provided the product allows cancellation in its current state.

“I cannot find Limits”
Use the exact signed-in paths: mobile Profile & Settings → Limits; web profile icon Settings → Account limits. Menus can differ by region, app version, and product. Confirm that you are in the account whose payment method you intend to use.
“The alert option is missing”
Search for the asset, open its page, and tap the star first. The documented mobile alert flow exposes the bell-plus control after the asset is watchlisted. If the asset or alert type is unavailable, check whether that product is supported in your region.
“The alert arrived but nothing was bought”
That is expected. A price alert is notification-only. Open the trading interface and submit an order yourself if the market conditions and your plan still justify it.
“My order was rejected even though I am below my account limit”
Account capacity and order-entry rules are independent. Read the rejection message for a price-band, balance, product, regional, or order-type issue. A limit order also requires the specified price and quantity to be valid for the selected market.

“My balance is unavailable”
Inspect open orders. An unfilled or partially filled order may be reserving funds. Cancel the relevant order through order management if you no longer want it, then verify that the balance is released before submitting another trade.

“The order reached my price but did not fill completely”
Limit execution depends on matching liquidity and queue position. Review the filled quantity and remaining open amount. A stop-limit order has the additional possibility that its limit instruction remains unfilled after the stop activates.
Regional and account-specific cautions
- Purchase and deposit limits are individualized; location and payment method can change the values shown.
- Account activity, trading history, payment type, and region can affect limits over time.
- Advanced order types, price bands, and notification options can vary by Coinbase product and jurisdiction.
- Use the help material presented for your region and the values displayed after signing in.
- Do not rely on a third-party screenshot or another customer’s limit as a promise about your account.
Final checklist before pressing Buy or Sell
- Have you checked the current account limit for the exact payment method?
- Is the intended asset on your watchlist, with the correct above/below alert target?
- Are the notification channels enabled and permitted on your device?
- Are you clear that the alert will not place an order?
- Does the selected order type match your execution plan?
- Have you reviewed price, quantity, fees, price-band messages, and available balance?
- Have you checked for existing open or partially filled orders that reserve funds?
- After submission, will you monitor order management rather than assuming a full fill?
Coinbase’s help articles titled “Account limits,” “Set and receive price alerts,” “Advanced trade order types,” “Place a limit order,” and “Order management” describe the relevant controls. Interface wording and availability can change, so the signed-in account remains the authoritative place to confirm what you can use.

How do I set a Coinbase price alert?
Find the stock or cryptocurrency in the mobile app, open its asset page, tap the star to add it to your watchlist, select the bell-plus icon, choose Add Alert, set an above- or below-price target, and save.
Will a Coinbase price alert automatically buy or sell?
No. A price alert is a notification only. It does not submit, cancel, or modify an order. You must review the market and place an order separately.
Why must an asset be on my watchlist first?
Coinbase’s documented mobile flow exposes the alert control after the asset has been added to the watchlist. Return to the asset page and confirm the star is active if the bell-plus option is missing.
What is the difference between an account limit and a limit order?
An account purchase or deposit limit governs capacity for a payment type. A limit order is an instruction on an individual trade that specifies a price constraint. Neither control changes the other.

An open or partially filled order can reserve the funds committed to it, leaving them unavailable for another transaction. Check order management and cancel the order if you no longer want it, then verify the balance is released.
Does a limit order guarantee a fill when the market reaches my price?
No. The order may remain unfilled or partially filled because matching liquidity and queue position matter. A stop-limit order can also activate and then remain unfilled if the market moves past its limit price.
Can I get a higher Coinbase limit?
If Coinbase considers your account eligible, next steps appear in the Account limits area. Follow those instructions, but treat eligibility as an invitation to apply or provide information, not a guarantee that an increase will be approved.
The Bottom Line
Check the account-specific limit for the payment method you will use, add the asset to your watchlist before creating a mobile alert, and enable the notification channels you can monitor. Then choose an order instruction separately, review price, quantity, fees, balance, and price-band messages, and watch order management for open or partial fills. Alerts notify you; account limits govern funding capacity; orders control attempted execution, and none should be treated as a guarantee.
