Step 1: Download a Vivid Friction image to Photos
Choose one of the four designs
Open the Vivid Friction wallpaper post and select the design you want. Because the collection is described as four coordinated crops from a larger landscape composition, choose the individual crop that best suits the screen you are setting. You can repeat the process later if you want to try another design.
Save the file, then verify it
Use the download option provided with the image post and save the result to your iPhone. Open Photos and locate the newly saved picture. Verification matters: the wallpaper picker can only show images that are available to Photos, so an image that remains only in a browser preview will not be selectable from the Photos option in Settings.
If several files were downloaded, note which one you intend to use. A clear filename or the image’s appearance in Photos can help you distinguish the four related designs before you begin the setup.
Step 2: Open the new-wallpaper picker
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
Apple documents this path in its Change the wallpaper on iPhone guide. The Add New Wallpaper command starts a new wallpaper configuration without requiring you to overwrite an existing setup first.
Step 3: Select the downloaded image
- In the wallpaper gallery, tap Photos.
- Browse to the Vivid Friction image you saved.
- Tap the image to load it into the wallpaper preview.
If the image does not appear, leave the picker and confirm in Photos that the download completed and is visible in the library. Return to Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos after it is present.

Step 4: Check the preview and make changes
Review how the brush texture and color gradient sit within the preview. The wallpaper is a crop of a larger composition according to iDownloadBlog’s description, so the phone preview may frame the artwork differently from the image as it appeared in the article. Use any controls offered in the preview to make the composition work for your screen, then continue with Add.
Check both the Lock Screen and the Home Screen context before finishing. Look for important clock elements, widgets, app labels, or other interface elements that could sit over a high-contrast brush stroke. This is a visual check rather than a claim about a fixed crop or a particular image dimension; those technical details are not stated in the available source.

Step 5: Add the wallpaper and choose where it applies
- Tap Add after you are satisfied with the preview.
- Choose one of the two options Apple provides:
- Set as Wallpaper Pair applies the configuration to both the Lock Screen and Home Screen.
- Customize Home Screen lets you make the Home Screen look different from the Lock Screen.
Apple’s guide uses these labels for the choices that appear after tapping Add. The decision is about whether the two screens should share the same setup, not about downloading a second copy of the image.

Using the same Vivid Friction image on both screens

Afterward, lock and unlock the iPhone once to check the finished result. Confirm that the Lock Screen view remains readable and that the Home Screen background does not make icons or labels difficult to see. If the arrangement is not suitable, create a new wallpaper from the same image and choose the separate customization route instead.

Giving the Home Screen a separate treatment
Select Customize Home Screen if you want the Lock Screen to show the Vivid Friction artwork while the Home Screen uses different settings. Apple’s choice opens the Home Screen customization stage after you tap Add. Make the Home Screen changes offered there, then finish the configuration.

Alternative method: start from the Lock Screen
Apple documents a second way to create a wallpaper. Touch and hold the current Lock Screen to open the wallpaper gallery, then tap the Add button to make a new wallpaper. From that gallery, continue through the Photos selection and the same Add decision described above.
Use this method when you are already on the Lock Screen and want to switch wallpapers without first opening Settings. The Settings route remains available through Settings > Wallpaper, including when you need to manage or change an existing wallpaper.
Changing the Vivid Friction wallpaper later
To replace the current setup, open Settings > Wallpaper and use Apple’s wallpaper controls to add or change a configuration. You can also touch and hold the Lock Screen to reach the wallpaper gallery and tap Add for a new one.

When trying a different Vivid Friction design, save that image to Photos first. The wallpaper picker’s Photos section reads from the library, so the new file must be available there before it can be selected.

The downloaded image is missing from Photos in the wallpaper picker
- Open Photos and search for the image you downloaded.
- If it is not in the library, return to the wallpaper article and use its download control again.
- Wait for the image to finish saving, then verify it in Photos before reopening the wallpaper picker.
- Return to Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos and select it.
The key check is whether the file is in Photos, not merely visible in a browser tab.
The preview does not show the composition as expected
Recheck the selected file in Photos and compare it with the four choices in the original article. The collection is described as mobile crops from a larger landscape image, so each file may frame the brush strokes differently. Try another crop if the first one does not suit the Lock Screen or Home Screen.
The artwork looks good on the Lock Screen but not behind app icons

There is no need to remove the whole Photos library. Save or identify the intended Vivid Friction file, then create another wallpaper through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos or the Lock Screen gallery’s Add button.

You want to return to an earlier setup
Open the Lock Screen gallery by touching and holding the Lock Screen, or manage wallpapers from Settings > Wallpaper. Select the configuration you want from Apple’s wallpaper controls rather than downloading the image again.
Choosing between the four Vivid Friction images
